TheSaneWriter, in What can a senior desktop support tech do who is burned out?

If you are wanting to move into a more programming oriented career, then I would say that while a college degree is useful it is by no means required. One of the things that you could do is complete a certification course and then apply for an entry level position, you’ll take a pay cut but unfortunately that’s common when changing careers. What type of work are you currently hope to move into?

@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

I have to search for a course that would hold weight and not just look like Uncle Slappy’s IT Career School.

TheSaneWriter,

Indeed. I’m certain they exist, but it’s a case of needing to research which organizations are reputable and respected for their certifications.

TheL321, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

Many people upgrade every year because of perceived obsolescence.

chrisphero, in Does anyone else struggle with silence, particularly when trying to sleep?

I also have a sometimes hard time falling asleep, I guess I think and overthink everything too much…

So my go-to are audio books and podcasts.

LachlanUnchained,

I am a wild over thinker. Problem I have with audio books and podcasts, is i miss too much of them by falling asleep. Haha. Even with the sleep time on like only 30min.

chrisphero,

I mostly listen to audio books for sleeping that I’ve already read or listened too before, otherwise it has the opposite effect haha. This way I don’t care if I miss something or re-listen to something.

Sometimes I fall asleep within the same 5 min for a week 😂

IDK, I always buy used phones and pretty much use them until they either die or are no longer usable because they were abandoned by the manufacturer for too long. I haven’t had a new phone in probably close to a decade now. The last new phone I bought was an Xperia Z3 Compact.

Lakes, in What's a good way to prank your coworker?

Have any other monitors available?

If you do, literally change the monitor and hide the other one. Smaller the better.

Dirk, in What can a senior desktop support tech do who is burned out?

With Docker and Linux you could check the opportunities in the field of IT operations.

I’ve always wanted to try this:

makanimike, in What's the hottest and coldest temperature you've ever been in?

I have been in high -30Cs (or is it more correct so say low in this case?) in Lapland. I guess it was around -36 or -37?
I have also been in high 40s (46 or 47) in the Danakil Depression in Ethiopia, which also happens to be one of the lowest points on land on the planet. But we also hiked to the edge of a volcano and hot springs. I think it may have been even hotter there? but that would probably be cheating.

Elw, in I'm being harassed by mosquitoes, how do i kill them all?

Get a couple of buckets of water and place them around your yard. Drop a “Misquote Dunks” tablet in each bucket. Follow the package instructions for refreshing the dunks every so often.

Mosquito dunks work by “poisoning” what looks to the mosquito like an ideal spot to lay eggs; a pale of still water. But the mosquito dunk bacteria kills the mosquito larvae before they hatch.

It’s a more “long term” solution as it doesn’t actively take care of the current mosquito population but it prevents them from breeding.

There is also a type of fish called the misquitofish that you can put in a small pond, such as a wash basin or feeding trough. They feed on the mosquito larvae and are fairly self sufficient. I know people who use them to control mosquito populations in their gardens and they rarely have to do any kind of maintenance.

Nioxic,

It also doesnt kill mosquitos that lay eggs elsewhere

ezmack,

When I did Facilities stuff they’d have me go around and dunk all the storm drains too

Gatsby, in What's the hottest and coldest temperature you've ever been in?

I slept in a tent in 2°F(-16.6°C) weather, I’ve probably been in slightly colder but not while sleeping.

Hottest was 117°F(47.2°C, last year in my home town it was +110°F for over two weeks straight.

maynarkh, in What would Twitter look like with an absolute number of Likes in the system?

They would have real tangible value and became an asset subject to speculation and manipulation like crypto.

Doe, in Do I need to remove metadata from pictures before uploading?

If sharing from iOS, you can chose to strip the information when sharing.

The language on the toggle however suggests the metadata is only shared when using AirDrop.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

On Android, you can use Scrambled EXIF or Image Pipe through the share menu, or through file selection.

That's sweet; now I just need to remember to use it.

OrkneyKomodo, in What's the hottest and coldest temperature you've ever been in?
@OrkneyKomodo@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

40°C - Malta holiday.
-21°C - Kasprowy Wierch hike.

jaanus20,

Hike? That must’ve been extreme

OrkneyKomodo,
@OrkneyKomodo@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

The weather can change quite quickly in the mountains. It was winter hiking anyway, but suddenly dropped as we neared the top. Thankfully, there is a cable car station at the top of Kasprowy.

RoxActually, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

Yeah for sure. Somedays no, but once you make it part of your routine it gets alot easier to enjoy. I usually listen to podcasts or music to keep my mind more active though and that helps alot, because then you are not thinking solely of the physical exertion on my body.

ChrV, in What password manager do you recommend?
@ChrV@kbin.social avatar

Last year I tried (and paid) 1Password.
For the past 6 months I'm using Bitwarden and it's really good. I find 1Password's UI better but if we consider the cost it's better to stay with Bitwarden.

Swuden,

1Password isn’t open source, is it? I use it and I’m super happy with it though. I don’t mind paying a bit for good security. I do wish it was OSS though.

ChrV,
@ChrV@kbin.social avatar

No I don't think it is. I was super happy too but I decided to give Bitwarden a fair try and it's really good too. I only miss the 2FA codes that 1Password filled automatically but I'm using Aegis now since I had some worries about having one app with both the passwords and 2fa codes.

Onionizer,

Bitwarden can auto copy the 2FA code so you just hit ctrl+v

ChrV,
@ChrV@kbin.social avatar

Not in the free version unless I'm mistaken

skatrek47,

I have also really enjoyed 1password, I also subscribe to Fastmail and the easy to make “masked emails” gives me additional peace of mind and makes that practice of unique or throwaway emails much easier to implement.
