ScotinDub, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

I used to get reasonable content as per my interests. Now after having a kid its just baby songs and bluey. I use smarttubenext on a firestick so at least I don’t get ads but it’s not great.

lvxferre, in How safe is it to eat raw eggs?
@lvxferre@lemmy.ml avatar

As long as the eggs are store-bought you should be fine (do not use caipira chicken eggs). Otherwise Paraná would be a desert, given how often we prepare mayo with raw yolks here.

ImFresh3x, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

I like new cameras, higher refresh rates, and super fast page loads.

Selling my phone on Craigslist every year and buying new is about the same price as buying new every few years.

$1500 phone. 3 years. $500 per year.

$1500 phone. Sell for $900-$1000 at one year old. Buy new phone for $1500. $500-600 per year. And I have a always warranty (extended by my credit card).

Similar price per year, night and day better product.

Unquote0270,

$500 seems insane to me, I’ve only ever paid about £100 for a phone and it does everything I need it for.

ImFresh3x,

Yeah. Well I use my phone in the same way a professional uses their commercial equipment. And that equipment isn’t cheap. And I love technology. It’s something I personally enjoy. Considering it’s something I use for hours on end every single day, more than any other tool I use in life, and memorializes my life, I have no issue spending $40 a month on it.

Where I live $500 feels nothing. Rent where I live is like $5k per month. Everything is stupid expensive. I’m just numb to it. I am quite frugal in other ways though. My car is 20 years old. I’ll drive it until the wheels fall off. I don’t care about fancy cars at all. And I don’t enjoy “the feel of a new car.”

Unquote0270,

That’s fair enough, I didn’t mean to imply there is anything wrong with it, just that it seems alien to me and my cheapskate ways. I can understand it though, I prefer to use a computer and only really use my phone for browsing but I tend to forget that for some people it’s much more like what I would use a computer for.

Acid,

Yeah that’s a no go mate, I couldn’t even do my job if I had a £100 phone it would end up being a cluster fuck as I need to constantly look at spreadsheets, and multiple email inboxes and work through a web Ui portal and none of that is gonna be a good experience on a phone at that price.

I’ve used enough of those cheap £100 phones be they new or second hand to know for someone who’s actually using their phone to do work they are completely unsuitable.

Wojwo, in What exercises can I do to strengthen my willpower?

Well, the research says that therapy is great, but only after you’re on meds. You don’t lack willpower, it’s a physiological problem that needs to be addressed by medical care.

Cyder, in Rule

Communities usually named 195 or 196 have a rule that if you go there you have to post something. So people will post something and title it “Rule.” And it leads to a bunch of low effort crap posts.

Just block any 195 and 196 communites to save your feed from getting overwhelmed with bad posts.

Ziggurat,

Even though, I am no fun of low effort content, there is so few active community that it’s a bit refreshing to see content, even low effort, also they spread to much over Lemmy, that looks like it’ll contaminate lemmy’s culture which is great to become something else than redditfugees

Coeus,

If you think there are few active communities on Lemmy, you may be looking in the wrong place.

galloog1, in What's the hottest and coldest temperature you've ever been in?

Hottest was just under 54° (128.6°F) in Kuwait. I went for a run just to say I was the only person to go for a run in the hottest day in human history so far.

I think it got down to -29 (-20) in Albany NY one year but I’m looking for colder experiences soon.

mythic_tartan,

Awesome. I’m a 40/-40 runner.

galloog1,

I would love to hear about your prep to run in -40. I mostly tap out at -10C

fluffman86, in I'm being harassed by mosquitoes, how do i kill them all?

Call an exterminator, preferably a small mom&pop shop and not a big Orkin or Terminex or whatever, and have them come and and do a mosquito treatment. They’ll spray a chemical on the outside of your house, under the leaves of your trees/bushes, etc. Then they’ll spray inside, but just the corners for other bugs. You’ll need to keep your dog out of the chemical inside for about 10-20 minutes, and out of the chemical outside for probably an hour. After that it’s dry and non-toxic to mammals but will get soaked up by insects. Be sure to double check that with the exterminator, times vary depending on the chemical used.

Good treatments should last a solid 2-3 months, which ought to be enough to get you through the worst of mosquito season, unless you’re in Florida or something.

ieatpillowtags,

I’ve heard that those treatments are fairly indiscriminate and will kill most insects, not just mosquitoes. I worry about the effect on the local ecosystem such as birds that would eat them.

Black_Gulaman, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?
@Black_Gulaman@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

The feel of your muscles tightening. It sure makes you feel that you’re doing something great and you’re achieving something good.

Thats how I feel.

TheAnonymouseJoker, in I'm being harassed by mosquitoes, how do i kill them all?
@TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

I am from India and our summers are pretty bad, and the rainy season that follows up is both humid and a mosquito menace.

Apply mosquito killing creams or lotions. If you are too concerned about them, use natural essential oils made of plants that do this. They cost twice the chemical creams. No matter what you do with windows, cleaning standing waters, nets, electric rackets, you will still end up with those shitty flies making funny noises at your ear when sleeping. Peaceful sleeps and nights.

Use other measures as well, but the body cream/oil will be your final defense line that cannot be breached.

What's the history behind the 195/196 name?

RotaryKeyboard, in What's a good way to prank your coworker?

Here’s one I witnessed in an office about 25 years ago. Some engineers filled a plastic 35mm film canister with a bunch of the waste paper from a three-hole punch. That’s basically the little white circles of paper. Then they took a can of compressed air and, with the cap mostly on the canister, slowly filled the canister with super-cooled air from the compressed air canister. Then they fully sealed the cap and went to talk to the mark. They placed the canister nearby – on the mark’s desktop computer, I think. Just out of sight. To avoid arousing suspicion, they stayed and talked to him for 30 seconds or so. Then they walked off to go back to work (and watch the prank unfold from a distance).

That little canister sat there for a while, with the super-cooled air slowly warming to room temperature. As you know, the molecules of cold gasses are very close together, and they start to expand outward as they warm. So when this canister got warm enough, there was enough pressure inside to pop the lid off and distribute the little white paper circles in a perfectly random pattern in a circle about six feet around the mark.

It was glorious.

abbadon420,

I like it just for how smart this is.

slazer2au,

Glitter bomb without the glitter. I like it.

buco, in What's your favorite rabbit hole to go down?
@buco@lemmy.fmhy.ml avatar

I start out with the Fermi paradox and might end up anywhere. And once every now and then I read about those two Dutch girls who got lost in the Amazon jungle.

its4am,

I think about that incident about the two Dutch tourists every few months. It’s just crazy imagining what they went through.

minorsecond, in What's a good way to prank your coworker?

You just gave me an awesome prank to pull on my wife. Thanks!

Diglett983, in What's the hottest and coldest temperature you've ever been in?

Coldest: -20º Vilnius Hottest: 47º Sevilla

danhakimi, in What would Twitter look like with an absolute number of Likes in the system?
@danhakimi@kbin.social avatar

I imagine I'd probably just not like anything. Not worth the effort of managing.
