Candelestine, in What happened to the previous meme content/posters?

So, that’s kinda just how meme culture works in larger communities. It’s extremely iterative. What happened is all those old posters are still around, they just switched to making content using older templates, and reminiscing about their favorites of the past.

This is a pretty big wave, this isn’t beans or something, this took over almost the whole Lemmyverse, so it’ll probably leave a minor lingering popularity. My guess is it should mostly be passed in another couple days or so, when people start running a little lower on content. The number of good ones is large, but fundamentally finite.

Meme culture is less the standard human-herd behavior and something quicker and more unitary. It’s best visualized as a huge flock of birds or school of fish. Who’s in charge and where is it going? No clue. It’s going there though.

Haldum96, in Is it worth to read Star Wars novels?

Absolutely. I highly recommend both canon Thrawn trilogies by Timothy Zahn.

SmellyNinja,
@SmellyNinja@lemmy.world avatar

Seconded. If you’re open to it the older/non-canon audio book is amazing way to experience the story as well. Includes musical cues, sound effects, and the narrator does an incredible job of imitating the OG cast.

rm_dash_r_star, in What are your favorite "ugly" games?
@rm_dash_r_star@lemm.ee avatar

Stardew Valley, hands down one of the graphically ugliest modern games, like 80’s console style. Though it’s a really good game and I’ve put a of lot of hours into it. People say it’s meant to look that way as intentional retro styling, but damn it’s ugly. I actually added a mod on PC to use AA on the blocky graphics and it makes it look a lot better.

nebula42,
@nebula42@lemmy.world avatar

Dk what you’re talking about Stardew valley has some incredible pixel art

rm_dash_r_star,
@rm_dash_r_star@lemm.ee avatar

Depends on the monitor. It’s pretty horrific on a 27" desktop monitor. On a phone it’s probably good. Anyway, like I said I added an AA mod and it looks a lot better on the PC screen, still pretty crude though. I play a number of 2D games on my PC and Stardew Valley has outstandingly pixelated artwork in comparison. That’s not to say I don’t like the game, I like it a lot and have put a good number of hours into it.

AnarchoYeasty,

Stardew isn’t 80’s console style at all? It’s just pixel art? And doesn’t even look bad.

dumpsterlid,

You can not like the art style of Stardew Valley, but calling it ugly in the way DF, TOME, DCSS or other games that have very rudimentary graphics styles are I think is missing the point in this context. A lot of effort and production time was put into Stardew Valley’s graphics, it is undeniably not “ugly” the way other games that developers focused all their time on gameplay instead of graphics are.

ChrisFhey, in What are some of the things you say / think to yourself when going through a hard time or dealing with uncertainty to help yourself along?
@ChrisFhey@kbin.social avatar

I don’t have anything special really. Just an “It is what it is” and try to get through regardless.

TORFdot0, in Is it worth to read Star Wars novels?

I read the Jedi prince series and then the thrawn trilogy as a kid and teen. Jedi Prince does not hold up as an adult lol but was really good for my age at the time.

One thing I will say about reading EU novels is that it made hate the sequel movies when they came out for just throwing away the beloved characters instead of the expanding on them.

dot20, in What's a big tech product that you actually find useful?

Important to say, I mean products you use even though there are alternatives, not monopolies like YouTube.

I don’t think this is quite true when it comes to YouTube. There are plenty of alternatives that content creators could use (and some do), from Vimeo to Nebula to PeerTube.

The reason content creators prefer to upload on YouTube are the user base and monetization opportunities. They’re not forced to do so, and in fact YouTube is facing competition from e.g. Twitch and TikTok.

TheMinions, in Is it worth to read Star Wars novels?

I read several of the Rogue Squadron books while on a long vacation and enjoyed them a lot, but they weren’t anything life changing.

dream_weasel, in Is it worth to read Star Wars novels?

Wheel of time should be long enough.

sarsaparilyptus, in Is it worth to read Star Wars novels?

Lando Calrissian and the Mindsharp of Sharu is basically Shakespeare

banana_meccanica, in What are some of the things you say / think to yourself when going through a hard time or dealing with uncertainty to help yourself along?

Sometimes I do positive self talk, but will not work without some basic attitude. And that is the selfishness, brutal and cruel. So during hardest and darkest time the positivy have actually a scary light and I hope to never be tested by someone in the future.

CapitalismsRefugee, in What are some of the things you say / think to yourself when going through a hard time or dealing with uncertainty to help yourself along?

These were the words I used when discussing an upcoming potential termination,

“But the person I’ll be on the other side of [this crisis of maybe termination] will be no more absolutely or permanently diminished than the one I became after any other of the subjectively substantial life-changing crises.”

I’ve lived through some pretty painful shit. I feel quite angry about the misery I consider my life to currently be, but I still choose to live. With these words I was explaining that this “disaster” couldn’t be any more miserable than the sundry other miseries I’ve learned to live with. The consequences of this “crisis” may absolutely be something I will hate deeply and bitterly, but I doubt it’s going to be the straw that gets me to break this camel’s back.

Bautznersenf, in What series did you rewatch most often?

One and only I’ve fully rewatched is Veep. It’s brilliant in so many ways. I’ve revisited a lot of office episodes at random over time so I may have even rewatched the whole thing by now.

Computerchairgeneral, in Is it worth to read Star Wars novels?

Maybe? There are a lot of them and the quality varies depending on the book. You can't go wrong with the original Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn. Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and Last Command were considered the unofficial sequel trilogy by some fans and they started off the entire Star Wars Expanded Universe, which got rebranded to the Legends continuity when Disney took over. Besides the Thrawn Trilogy, I'd also recommend the Revenge of the Sith novelization. I went in not expecting much, but it really expands on a lot of things the movie brushes over, and witnessing Anakin's story from his viewpoint was a lot more compelling than what we got in the movie. From there, it really depends on what you want to read about.
The Star Wars book finder is a neat tool that lets you search by author, topic, or genre if you're looking for something specific.

Kettellkorn,

ROTS novelization was dope. It expands every aspect of the story in such a cool way.

julianschmulian, in Is it worth to read Star Wars novels?

Being a star wars fan and avid reader I felt like I should give them a try, did some research and the consensus seemed to be that the thawn trilogy was the best, read book one and hated it for how one-dimensional the characters were, nothing at all noteworthy from a literary perspective

mbryson, in Downvotes = “I disagree” or “this is bad and you should feel bad”?
@mbryson@lemmy.ca avatar

I’ve always been partial to “irrelevant to the discussion”.

For example: if a post is detailing increased temperatures compared to a previous year: ✅ Comment saying “This is most likely an effect of global warming” ✅ Comment saying “This paper is potentially biased as the paper/publication is sponsored” ✅ Replies to these comments discussing the legitimacy of their claims (for or against them) ⛔ Comment which is promoting their own content (even if related) with no discussion of the linked post ⛔ Intentionally incendiary comments. “Liberals will say it’s climate change I bet.” ⛔ Completely off topic. “Ok but guys let’s talk about SCARING THE HOES for a second here. Straight flames.”

Too many people use a downvote as “I disagree” when a comment may actually provide a different viewpoint and - as long as it’s respectful and open to counterpoints itself - can be a nice addition to the discussion.
