golamas1999, in Do any of you guy happen to remember the name of that discord server that would share links to random publicly available security cameras?

Don’t know but on iOS there is an app called iSpy that does this.

CatBusBand, in What gaming console / platform do you prefer?

PC. For the price of a single console game, I could buy 5 pc games. Nothing can beat that pricing.

Prouvaire, in Where do you find your arts and culture news?
@Prouvaire@kbin.social avatar

Arts and culture is a very broad topic area. It covers (among other things):

  • performing arts (eg plays, musicals, film, TV, radio)
  • visual arts (eg painting, drawing, sculpture, crafts)
  • literature (eg books, poetry, the various literary genres)
  • design (eg fashion, typography, architecture)

Mastodon has several instances focussed on different aspects of arts & culture, eg:

Different lemmy and kbin instances have various arts & culture communities (some are reasonably active, some aren't). You can use community/magazine search tools to find ones to your liking.

Eg to search for theatre related communities you could use:

Note that due to the way the fediverse works, these search aggregators aren't necessarily comprehensive. So it's worth spreading your search over several tools.

AngrilyEatingMuffins,

Can someone remind me how I sign up to mastodon instances and whatnot with kbin? TIA

I’m somewhere with bad internet or I’d google it or whatever

how I sign up to mastodon instances and whatnot with kbin

As I understand it, you don't sign up to a mastodon instance with kbin. Rather, kbin has the ability to act as a way of following fediverse users and hashtags in the same way as mastodon does.

In other words, if mastodon is the fediverse's version of twitter, and lemmy is the fediverse's version of reddit, then kbin is a combination of the two.

However, while kbin's lemmy/reddit features are maturing nicely, the mastodon/twitter functions are still pretty embryonic. (Bear in mind that kbin is a young project that for most of its life had only a single developer.)

For example:

  • On kbin you can follow fediverse users by clicking on the "Follow" button in their profile (similar to the way you can follow users on mastodon), but I don't think there's a way of having their posts appear on a timeline yet.
  • Similarly, while you can create a magazine that follows certain hashtags in the "microblog" section of a magazine, you can't currently do that as part of your kbin personal profile in the way you can choose to follow hashtags on mastodon and have them appear in your feed. (And the propagation of hashtags between kbin and the wider fediverse seems to be haphazard at the moment in any case.)

What I would recommend for now is to create a mastodon account on a mastodon instance of your choice, and treat the two ecoystems as largely independent, until kbin's feature set matures.

All platforms. I own a Gaming PC, PS3, 4, 5. XBOX One, Nintendo Switch and an old school Nintendo, Sega Genesis, also have a Wii, Wii U, and Nintendo DS, and DS 3D.

I just love video games!

coolcrowe, in Is it worth to read Star Wars novels?
@coolcrowe@lemmy.world avatar

I remember reading Timothy Zahn as a teen and not being able to put the books down. Tbh I think his plotlines are better than the movies.

AlexWIWA, in In which game did you spend the most hours?

If we count map editors then most likely C&C: Generals: Zero Hour or ARMA 3.

If we don’t could editors then probably Halo 3 or MW2, maybe Stellaris.

infamousbelgian, in What gaming console / platform do you prefer?

PS (currently 5)

Raklin, in What series did you rewatch most often?

Futurama, How I Met Your Mother (as an aside, the sequel series is pretty good), Chuck, and Bob’s Burgers.

Xbox X, but I’m considering a Steam Deck for a more portable experience. I need to be able to play off line though.

smoof,

I'm offline half the time on Steam Deck. It has issues with reconnecting with my router after resuming and I just ignore it. If I manually connect when it doesn't auto connect, it complains about password error, but I just keep spamming ok and it connects. I wish I knew how to fix it.

marmarama,

Have you tried turning off Wi-Fi power management on the Deck? The Deck’s Wi-Fi is normally pretty good, but the Wi-Fi power management occasionally has issues with some combinations of router chipset and router settings, which can cause symptoms like what you’re experiencing.

Full instructions are here: seekingtech.com/how-to-disable-wi-fi-power-manage…

aln, in What gaming console / platform do you prefer?

Steam Deck for single player, PC for multiplayer.

girl, in What gaming console / platform do you prefer?

Definitely my Deck. I like being able to sit on the couch and play alongside my husband on his PS5, rather than being stuck at a desk. I’ve always played handhelds, like the PSP, gameboy/DS/switch.

Yazer, in What series did you rewatch most often?

The office. Probably 5x by now. Always great.

paulchartres,

Agreed, I’m on my third rewatch… never gets old!

bmorton, (edited ) in Best options for Non-Google cloud storage as of 2022?

This is perhaps for a narrower audience, but if you run a consumer version of Windows (not Server), you can get Backblaze unlimited storage for $70/year per device.

They support encryption with a key you provide in the client, which is super convenient. Restoring individual files is pretty straightforward, but an entire drive was a bit of work last time I had to do it. For the price, it’s a nice piece peace of mind for 10TB+ of versioned storage.

PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.one avatar

That’s what I personally use, but it’s important to note that Backblaze is meant to be a BACKUP, not “cloud storage” like OP asked about. The goal of backup is just to make sure your local files have a copy somewhere. If somebody’s asking for a cloud storage solution, they’re generally looking for an offsite place to store all their files.

Obviously there’s a lot of grey area, as some cloud storage companies offer “backup” services for some (but not all) of your local files. But in general, these are two different things.

TORFdot0, in What gaming console / platform do you prefer?

I just play the games that interest me, doesn’t matter the platform. Right now I don’t have a series S/X console because none of the current gen Xbox exclusives interest me. I play cloud, Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, and sega
