The litany against fear

bigfish,
EisFrei, in Conventions for techies/nerds?

Chaos Communication Congress in Germany.

I’ve been quite a few times and it’s always a blast. You can have the nichest of interests, if it is in any way tech adjacent you’ll find a few like minded people.

You can listen to great talks or find a place in the “Hack Center” and tinker away with a few thousand people.

luthis, in What do you use Vaseline for?

YES. Tiny cuts.

You know when you get a paper cut or similar, (not a scratch, a clean cut) and it stings and is really irritating, but it’s not deep enough to bleed much if at all?

Whack some vaseline on it. You block the air from your nerves and get instant relief.

Also use it sometimes to prevent chafing, like before a long bike ride.

basketsandhoes,

I’m pretty sure that most of what Neosporin is is Vaseline… And it makes sense. It’s basically Vaseline with a mild antibiotic.

Vaseline is awesome for preventing scars too: when the wound is still open, use Neosporin, but after it closes up a bit and is just healing, switch to Vaseline and just keep it in Vaseline until it’s totally gone.

phar,

No need for the Neosporin at all, just use the vaseline

200ok,

This.

Wounds heal best when they’re kept moist and have a barrier.

Carmex lip balm as well.

KevonLooney,

That’s exactly what it was originally meant for.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petroleum_jelly

Native Americans discovered the use of petroleum jelly for protecting and healing skin.[4] Sophisticated oil pits had been built as early as 1415–1450 in Western Pennsylvania.[5] In 1859, workers operating the United States’s first oil rigs noticed a paraffin-like material forming on rigs in the course of investigating malfunctions. Believing the substance hastened healing, the workers used the jelly on cuts and burns.

luthis,

Oh wow, I never knew!

Look for a local hackerspace, they might have the right connections. Most of them have regular (often weekly) ‘social nights’ where you can hang out.

Mapcomplete.osm.be/hackerspaces has an (incomplete) listing

Early seasons are great… But it just gets so sappy

It did change, but taken as a whole it’s still my favourite show.

I’m with you there! I created a community here on .world I’d like to see grow (details on my ID) about this show. It’s got some great fans.

SirShanova,

Blackhat is for industry professionals. Same organziers as DEFCON, but tickets are thousands for companies to purchase.

I had question, I got my answer. Gonna delete it now I guess, let other people suffer as I did. :3

Candelestine, in What do you use Vaseline for?

It’s good for knuckles that crack and bleed in the winter. Lotion isn’t really good enough unless you’re applying it multiple times a day.

fiat_lux,

Same, and also for the tip of my nose. Windy weather with low humidity makes the tip of my nose itch like crazy. Normal moisturiser helps remove the itch but it absorbs too quickly to work as a protective measure, so an extra coat of Vaseline stops the area drying out again as quickly.

uncategory, in What series did you rewatch most often?

Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Babylon 5, Deep Space Nine.

suction, in What series did you rewatch most often?

Delocated. It’s criminally being slept on.

For day-to-day purposes, if you are used to Fahrenheit but not Celsius or vice versa, and all you want to do is get a rough sense of how warm or cold it is outside without having to do arithmetic involving fractions in your head, then remember that there are two temperatures in Celsius that are roughly the same in Fahrenheit but with their digits transposed: 16° C ~ 61° F, and 28° C ~ 82° F. You can then roughly interpolate/extrapolate by about 2° F for every 1° C.

Anticorp,

Also freezing is 0 in Celsius, so 32f is 0c. That one always helps me. Not as useful for converting c to f.

Climinteedus,

Alternatively, 100C is boiling, which is 212F.

venusenvy47,

Bob and Doug Mackenzie thought me to roughly convert C to F by taking the temperature in Celsius, doubling it and then adding 30. It gets you in the ballpark.

I use it around my hairline before I color my hair so as not to stain my skin.

Whitehorse,

Same. Also use it to smooth down any wayward eyebrows.

banana_meccanica, in What are some useful or just cool stuff to memorize?

Recipe for cooking. Useful for having a good meal and make other people love you.
