rho50, in The Best Two-Factor Authentication App? (iOS)

I use OTP Auth. Syncs via iCloud and has an Apple Watch app. Plus allows export which is convenient for if I ever want to switch platforms back to Android.

sparr, in What do you use Vaseline for?

The ointment for my overnight dry eyes is half petroleum jelly half mineral oil. I can and have used Vaseline (which is almost entirely petroleum jelly) in a pinch.

kuzcospoison, in What online games can be played by 2 users?

I’m sure there’s quite a few traditional board games that have online or app version, like risk for example. Iirc there’s also Scrabble, scythe, Catan, and I’m sure others. I can’t speak to the quality of the apps but I would recommend just searching for any games you’d be interested in playing and seeing if there’s a version on the app store.

meliache, in What online games can be played by 2 users?

Definitely the opposite of “light”, but you mentioned chess and if you’re into something similar but very different, you might try learning together on online-go.com. That site has a very short introduction into the game under the Learn tab, but it only covers the very basics and initially you will have no idea what you’re doing. The rules are simple, but there is a lot of complexity that arises from that and professionals study the game for years. But even as a complete beginner it’s fun. Full on 19x19 games can take a long time, but games on a 9x9 board are fairly quick, comparable to a chess game.

Still, this would be a journey. If you want something not turn-based and relaxing to play while chatting maybe try something else but I can’t give any recommendations.

sapo,
@sapo@beehaw.org avatar

I second the recommendation of Go. I’m very much a beginner, but the subtlety and variety of every game kind of ruined chess for me.

Some more recommendations of learning or beginner resources:

Go Magic has a lot of really in depth video and interactive tutorials. There’s a paid plan, but the beginner and early intermediate courses are free and way more thorough than anything else online right now.

The Conquest of Go is a great little game on steam that has its own tutorials and a campaign mode with scaling difficulty. It’s my favorite way to play against bots, but you can also connect your OGS account and play online through there.

thefool, in What online games can be played by 2 users?

www.boardgamearena.com has a bunch of board games, if you’re into that. I’ve played a bunch using my phone, and it works just fine.

A number of games require a premium membership, but there’s quite a few that are free

kuzcospoison,

This is great, thanks for posting, will definitely be checking this out.

hoodlem, in What are some of the things you say / think to yourself when going through a hard time or dealing with uncertainty to help yourself along?

ShadowAether, in How fluent do you think one have to be to be considered "bilingual"?

Um the first part of 2 and the 2nd part of 2 are two very different things. I know lots of people who pass the language test to get into college but make a lot of grammatical errors. Also basically require spellcheck/chatgpt to write a basic email. Also even my roommate makes grammatical errors in conversation and she has to do her job in her second language. You seem bilingual to me, seems kind of silly you seem to think you need to spent a year in England or something to be considered bilingual.

mrbubblesort, in What's the benefit of using Kbin over Lemmy?
@mrbubblesort@kbin.social avatar

Kbin's UI is just better. I realize both can be customized, but I'd prefer not to mess around with any of that yet. Plus I know people on mastadon, so that sealed it for me.

freeman,

Customizations brought vulns on Lemmy with the custom emojis introducing XSS vulns and a few takeovers in the recent weeks.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

but that’s not the fault of the UI, that’s the fault of the server and/or operator for allowing something like that to be even theoretically possible in the first place.

This is why you place UIs on separate domains from the servers, and always treat user input like it’s radioactive AND toxic.

freeman,

The custom emoji’s was a developed feature of Lemmy pushed out in their UI code. Even the project mainters instance was affected. Its why 0.18.2 was released.

join-lemmy.org/…/2023-07-11_-_Lemmy_Release_v0.18…

Thats not on server/infra operators. It was a vuln in the core UI code. Some operators DID patch it themselves (i think Beehaw is one), others were less affected (ie: My instance is closed and i dont use custom emjis anyhow), but those are features introduced by the maintainers and some of the bigger instances would get requests for them anyhow. So it was a problem.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

but the fundamental vulnerability is not in the UI, by that logic you could just run your own UI and get into servers without issue, the vulnerability is always in either the server software or in the specific deployment.

snowe,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

The vulnerability was in the ui.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

again, that makes no sense whatsoever, by that logic anyone can just merrily wreak havoc by using a client specially made to have vulnerabilities.

rayman30,
@rayman30@lemmy.world avatar

Subjective. I don’t like the UI on Kbin more than the Lemmy one.

jimrob4, in What series did you rewatch most often?
  • The Simpsons seasons 1-5 (5-10 are okay, 10+ is yuck)
  • Beavis and Butthead
  • MST3K seasons 1-10
HobbitFoot, in should we be worried about powers-moderators/users?

Moderating is hard and requires a set of skills to run moderation cheaply. You’re probably going to have a group of known mods on Lemmy doing the same, just because mods with these skills will be sought after.

A bigger issue is that Lemmy seems to be continuing Reddit’s practice of mod rank by time only. The implementation of a guild model would be better for mod governance, as it allows for better discussions of mod policy and allow greater input from the invested community.

Of course, trigger happy bans are still going to happen as people troll and worse.
