Imodium

alex, in What would be the best way to protect a room from unwated visitors in a low-tech fantasy world?

As many potential rooms as possible in as many locations as possible, and no way to distinguish the right one. Of course, rotate it regularly.

Guess you're visiting the Titanic shipwreck in a submarine...

ulu_mulu, in Why does Lemmy feel so fresh compared to Reddit?
@ulu_mulu@lemmy.world avatar

I noticed the same, probably because reddit has become really bad in the last years but I didn't realize it until I joined here a couple of weeks ago.

It's indeed refreshing being able to have honest discussions on a platform that's not infested by bots, propaganda, disguised ads, mass shitposting, hidden agendas, etc.

If lemmy becomes wildly popular to the masses, it's possible things will change for the worse, who knows, but I'll enjoy it a lot in the meantime.

incompetentboob,

I feel exactly the same. It’s really feels like the early days of reddit on here. Everyone is nice and the content is genuine.

I got really tired of typing out comments only to delete them because I didn’t have to patience to be told I’m wrong.

If things go bad here and the bots and the ads take over, we can move to another instance make new communities and start over.

Cott97, in Teaching children about online manipulation without creating a paranoid world view subject to manipulation?

My son was taught in school (UK) how to research on the web. You can never be sure how much they take in but he asked us one day why we were still watching the main stream news broadcasters - BBC, Sky, ITN. In a space of a couple of minutes he produced the original from the web for most of their stories, alternative views and pros and cons for most of the views. I learnt a lot that day and can honestly say I think his school did an excellent job. He does his own research and forms his own opinion - sometimes I don't agree but that's OK - the key is he can articulate his reasoning and provide evidence to support his view. I'm not sure as a parent if I'd have been as good a teacher or as impartial. I'm happy it's part of the syllabus in UK - I'm really not sure I'd be so happy if we lived in Florida for the school to teach it. Too much state intervention.

webghost0101,

For some reason this feels really strange to hear from the uk. I was under the impression things where moving more authoritarian with face detection cameras, encryption forbidden and id for pornsites. Usually those kind of government hate informed citizens and push propaganda. But maybe its just me who has been propagandized about the uk ¯_(ツ)_/¯

thetreesaysbark,

The government is also made up of different groups. Whilst one hand (security) may get more authoritarian, another hand (education) may encourage more liberal(?*) concepts, like knowing your source.

*I couldn't think of the right word for this.

Eat a full MRE the day before. Good luck ever pooping again.

RedMarsRepublic, in Teaching children about online manipulation without creating a paranoid world view subject to manipulation?

If you already know you have the correct worldview, then just present the data to him that would lead someone to believe in your worldview. You can't be immune to ideology without having one of your own. Someone who drifts through life believing nothing will believe anything.

phase_change,

Part of what prompted my question is that I doubt I have the correct worldview because I believe I’m influenced.

thetreesaysbark,

Who's to say whose world view is "correct". I'd say it's more important to do as other commenters have said, encourage critical thinking and research.

The child is their own person, not an extension of the parent to be influenced.

On a complete derailment, I just noticed my post go from 50 something points to 553. I clicked upvote myself and it went down to 5. As I wrote this message, it went through random numbers and is now sitting at 765. 😖

Op is gonna meet their stinky penpal in person and wants to save a special gift for when they get together, how romantic 😍

specialsymbol, in What do you feel like life will be like on earth in 100 years?

Everything's dried out, devastating storms are ravaging earth, few people have survived and fight each other for the rare food. Wars have scarred the landscape. The largest animals that survived are the size of cats or rats.

I can barely speak my native language of English. But I am fluent in sarcasm and cynicism. I would become tired and bored with adding some kind of trigger warning on every post.

Maybe we need to revert to old forum posts, and include a signature like the good 'ol days? Mine might say;

"In order to insult me, I must first value your opinion. No chance of that happening."

DracEULA, in What would be the best way to protect a room from unwated visitors in a low-tech fantasy world?

Not build a door or windows.

MargotRobbie, in Why does Lemmy feel so fresh compared to Reddit?
@MargotRobbie@lemmy.world avatar

Because everything is small and manageable for mods right now, and everyone is talking to everyone else.

Lemmy also has the advantage that the default "hot" sort favors recency instead of upvotes so that you can get into a thread pretty late and still have your comments be seen.

Akasazh,
@Akasazh@feddit.nl avatar

Hi Margot, just wanted you to know that you're always in my "hot" sort. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

WarlordSdocy, in Just had a thought about feed sterilization

I think the problem I've noticed with Lemmy is I tend to only get the more popular communities showing up over and over again. Reddit was at least a little better about showing smaller subreddits I visited in my main feed at least somewhat often. Not sure if I just need to change how I sort on Lemmy, I currently use hot and subscribed.

SilentStorms,
@SilentStorms@lemmy.fmhy.ml avatar

I find sorting by "new comments" is better for now. Hot seems broken

tgxn,
@tgxn@lemmy.tgxn.net avatar

Hot and active has improved a LOT in the latest RC release, should be coming to an instance near you soon™

maiskanzler,

Try Top Daily to see new stuff. The ranking will be fixed in a future release of lemmy to sink old but successful post to the bottom of the page and sprinkle in small community content as well.
