It looks like the bridge of the Enterprise from Star Trek: The Next Generation. I want Earth to be like that. Instead, though, we seem to be stuck in William Gibson’s Neuromancer universe.

modemnoise, in Getting Over a Breakup

Going through a break up sucks. Like really sucks. There’s no getting around it that I’ve found. It does get better after some time (maybe a lot of time), but I wouldn’t worry about that right now. Exercise seemed to help me with some of the overthinking and rumination. Over time it will get less raw and you’ll likely develop some perspective that will help, But for now take time to grieve and feel sad.

Working out and exercising will help boost your seratonin and dopamine levels AND make you too tired to ruminate much at bed time.

Thanks! I do think this will help me.

konata_izumi, in What anime world would you rather not live in?

psycho pass. my anxiety will immediately get me flagged as a deadly criminal and get me killed before committing any crime.

SirEDCaLot, in Getting Over a Breakup

First- understand that everyone goes through this, everybody has an answer for you, but the answer that worked for them may not work for you. There’s no right or wrong answer. A lot of people say ‘the way to get over someone is to get under someone’ personally I’ve never subscribed to that sort of thinking. It leads to unhealthy rebound relationships IMHO.

The only thing that will really fix this is time. So there is no magic bullet. There are things you can do to help though or pass the time faster. The biggest one is find ways to not ruminate. Focus your attention on other things, ideally useful things. Take some time to improve yourself in fun ways. Hit the gym is an obvious one, but I generally recommend take up a hobby or learn an instrument or take a class. Basically learn some fun new skill and focus your attention on that. It serves as a distraction from your grief, but also a source of engagement and a little happiness.
It WILL get better.

Redpandalovely,
@Redpandalovely@midwest.social avatar

I agree about the unhealthy rebound relationships and everything else you said.

UBI that is linked to the average income. So the more people work, the more everyone gets every month and vice versa. Make it so jobs are not necessary but available to better help humanity or whatever since machines will be able to provide most if not all the labor.

CanadaPlus, (edited ) in What does an ideal world look like to you?

Well, we could all move into a matrix-like universe where we’re gods, I guess. Then all we’d need for civilisation is server farms and the infrastructure to maintain them.

More near-term, if I was dictator for a day I’d impose a wealth cap between at maybe 10 or 15 million CAD and a guaranteed income you can live a very basic but comfortable life on. I feel like that would solve most problems. This could be applied globally too (with some ramp-up time) if we’re assuming world government. Climate change could be addressed with a carbon tax high enough to fund the offsetting of the pollution’s social cost.

I’m a wonk and I could go on, but those are the biggest things.

Dictatorship is never a good thing even if the dictator is benevolent because it removes the choice of the people of who they want to be represented by

CanadaPlus, (edited )

I needed a magical way to answer the question, though!

I’d actually go further - dictatorships don’t really exist, just steeply tapering autocracies. The dictator is at the top, but just like everyone else they spend their days avoiding being knocked down the pyramid, and they can’t know and often don’t care what people are doing a couple steps down. Meanwhile, the people who aren’t right on top get absolutely fucked by whoever is a couple steps up from them, with the step in between acting as intermediaries.

yuunikki, in what's something you watched because the poster made it look awesome and it turned out really lame?

Roots Search

Roots Search (1986)

RedCanasta,

Ok yea I would watch that too

yuunikki,

It’s why I did watch it, and it ended up being really lame.

Prefix,

To be fair, that poster does look pretty awesome.

JackbyDev, in Getting Over a Breakup

It’s just gonna take time. Even if you’re doing all the right things to speed it up it will still be awhile.

Try to distract yourself. Don’t try to totally ignore it or anything but trying to do some fun activities will help you get out of the gunk somewhat.

Redpandalovely,
@Redpandalovely@midwest.social avatar

Thank you

It takes time, your favorite music, whiskey, friends, food, pot, exercise, tobacco, sunshine, sports, chili cheese fries, boat rides or whatever you like. Just do you for a while!

Edit: Do everything in moderation

atzanteol,

With the caveat that many of these things should be done in moderation. Abusing drugs and alcohol will make things worse.

LazyViking,

That is simply your opinion

unicorn,

I would not recommend addictive and harmful habits like smoking tobacco/pot and drinking as a coping mechanism, it can go real bad and can make it harder to get out of that hole again.

boomhauer, in Lemmy, what are your "missed flight" stories?

Travelling from Austria to Croatia - got to the airport at 8pm for our 11 o’clock flight. Initially wasn’t concerned when our flight wasn’t showing on the boards. Became increasingly worried as time went on.

Spoke to the desk and were told the only flight to Croatia was 11AM that day… (Not 11pm)

Spent the night sleeping in the airport while waiting to check in to a airport hotel the next day as the next available flight to Croatia was 2 days after our original flight.

Used my bag as a pillow and accidentally broke some souvenirs we had bought. Cost us an extra $500 each in total for new flights and accomm as we had no travel insurance.

Sorry to hear you missed your flight - hope your experience isn’t too rough!

Jolan,

Why didn’t you just take the train? Austria to Croatia isn’t a very long distance

boomhauer,

That’s a good point - I’d say a mixture of stress and fatigue caused our brains to go to mush.

Edit: typo

@lemontea@lemmy.fmhy.ml avatar

Sheesh, one thing after another! I’m sorry you had to go through that. Your poor souvenirs too.

Mine in comparison isn’t so bad. I overslept (I’m a dumbass, I missed like 5 alarms) but fortunately the airline called and said they’d rebook my flight. So after a very panicked morning rush to the airport, I’m back home now killing time while I wait for my evening flight.

shapesandstuff,

Don’t take a nap today ;)

Papercrane, in Lemmy, what are your "missed flight" stories?

I only missed a flight once and i felt pretty stupid at the time as well. I took the metro to the airport and then I realized that I forgot some medicine.

I barely had time so I headed back but I messed up pretty badly because my medicine was the whole time in my backpack I just didn’t find it or was so sure that I forgot it.

Then I obviously missed my plane since I didnt get there 3 hours earlier. I missed one day in the beautiful city of Rome, but it wasn’t that bad. I think I was high at that time

YourFavouriteNPC, in What anime world would you rather not live in?

Plenty! Apart from the obvious horror stuff like Berserk, worlds where humans face constant threats of extinction by herculean threats like Evangelion or AoT (on Paradis, at least), or “society is gone” endtime settings like Dr. Stone, one that comes to my mind especially is Psycho Pass. I’d rather not spend life in an Orwellian dystopia, thanks.

On a side note: I think the world of Dragon Ball wouldn’t be half bad actually. Highly advanced technology, a diverse society (a dog for a king! Need I say more?) and the guarantee that an afterlife exists. Not to mention that on the off chance a villain kills a bunch of people again, they’ll be wished back to life by the heroes once they’ve inevitably won.

Pika,
@Pika@lemmy.world avatar

you gotta be careful with the afterlife though, only heros make it past judgement iirc most get turned away for aimless wander or whatever it was

dylanmorgan, in What does an ideal world look like to you?

All people guaranteed a baseline lifestyle. Housing, food, clean water, healthcare, electricity, internet. Everyone contributes to maintaining infrastructure in some way, would probably require 10-20 hours a week. Beyond that, people free to do what they want. Garden, make art, invent new things, whatever.

Saving this thread for writing inspiration.

I’ve always dreamed of being the last human on earth. There are signs of civilization yet it is all overgrown and in the process of being taken in by nature. The climate and ecosystem has rebalanced itself from what man did. There’s no else to annoy or judge me, and i can do whatever i please without caring for how i am perceived. I can finally be my true self. Eventually i, too, die, and nature simply forgets as mankind’s influence fades.
