I find that I’m really calm in emergency situations. When someone (including myself) gets hurt, I have a way of being the guardian in the room that stays calm and gets things done.
I broke my wrist pretty bad at the start of the year, to the point that I had surgery done and now have a metal plate and 7-8 screws. When it happened, I was oddly in fucking zen mode–despite the pain. I called my wife calmly, instructed someone to call an ambulance for me (made sure to specify non-emergency since it was a closed fracture), and made jokes at the hospital and in the ambulance. I was even taking selfies during all of the hospital procedures so that I could document it.
Outside of that, I’m an anxiety and ADHD-riddled mess that can barely make a decision on what snack to eat, and feels like he’s productive at nothing.
This sounds like my fiancé. She’s also riddled with anxiety and adhd which actually makes sense. She spends everyday and every moment bouncing around in her head analyzing every little thing and possibility that when something does actually happen she’s ready for it.
It definitely ties in to how our ADHD brains work. You’re right, it’s like we’ve prepped for every scenario our whole lives. It reminds me of the Futurama episode where Fry drinks 100 cups of coffee.
Bit embarrassed to admit this, but I used to seriously believe I had the ability to read woman’s minds.
I used to walk into a party/bar and instantly know if I was going to have sex with a particular woman. This was virtually infallible. (Disclaimer: This didn’t happen every time I went to a party, nor did I necessarily choose the woman, but every time I felt that feeling I was right.)
Turns out many years later I realized I just had a good understanding of woman’s body language. And could tell when a woman found me attractive enough, and was horny enough, to let me pick her up.
FTR I do feel foolish for ever thinking I had some supernatural ability with women, but I was somewhat attractive and charming, so that went to my head.
I quit Reddit as soon as it came out how much they wanted to charge Christian for running Apollo. Joined up on /kbin and have been incredibly happy with it.
Couldn’t have dual monitors due to Nvidia drivers not working correctly. Couldn’t play Overwatch. Deep Rock Galactic ran very badly and slowly. I’ve used Linux in the past for years but it’s just not good on a gaming laptop.
ah yes, those highy sought after delights of being restricted, linux is not bad, it’s just like a very strict parent that takes away all your gaming consoles and tells you it’s for your own good, and you know what? i’m happy to be violated everyday by the whims of such a helicopter parent, it’s a feature!!! If possible I would like daddy Linux to remove all my rights to music, movies, entertainment, and leave me only a code editor, a console and a chatroom with my employer, that way I would only work night and day to make money, it would be heaven to be trapped into a world where my only possible thoughts are of code and work.
Unsubscribe from the community. I did it this morning myself. It’s out of control and I had to scroll 2-3 pages before I found literally any content that wasn’t just a shitpost circlejerk meme.
It’s usually in the sidebar just like it was on Reddit. Also make sure that you’re only viewing your subscribed communities instead of “All” which is the default setting I believe.
There’s this one commie user who I always end up getting into an argument with. I don’t mind though because they actually seem to be intelligent and I like to hear what they have to say.
Nobody gets out of high school and gets the job they want when they grow up. ;)
Your first job is going to suck. It’s going to be hard work. The pay and hours are not going to be great. You won’t be respected as an employee or often as a human being.
What it’s going to teach you are organizational skills. Show up on time. Do the best job you can do. Admit your mistakes and learn from them.
Carry what you learn there to the next job and the next job. Do better each time. Learn new skills. Find jobs that interest you.
If you can, go to college for a STEM degree, network with other people and employers, and when you get out of college, you can do what you want.
If college isn’t for you, find a trade you’re good at and enroll in trade school. Plumbers, electrictians, HVAC techs, mechanics are never out of work.
Avoid: Retail work. Restaurant work. It will break you. Fine for when you’re in school, not if you’re out of school.
There is plenty of rudeness, hostility, and general toxicity and bigotry to go around. But there is also a lot of kindness, thoughtful consideration, and people who want to do the best for the platform and communities forming here.
I feel like the amount of more challenging or unwanted behaviour has gone up just in the time I’ve been here (hopefully not because of me!). From hardly seeing much of that in the first week or so, to then gradually seeing more and more as presumably more people move over from Reddit.
Be interesting to see how instances and communities respond, and if a more firm line will be drawn.
Absolutely! I think it will be good to keep an eye how users, communities and the mods and admins of different instances respond - because where the line is drawn or isn’t, or when people stay silent on important issues happening on their servers or in their communities can speak volumes. (I’m not saying I have seen anything like this yet, not implying anything - just interested to see how things will unfold over time and hopeful for the future!)
“Heroes are not giant statues framed against a red sky, they are people who say ‘This is my community and it’s my responsibility to make it better.’” Tom McCall - Oregon Governor 1967-1975.
“Psh, friends? Who needs them? They roll more off the line every day.”
Sounds super callous out of context, but the guy was incredibly friendly and kind. He had originally moved across the country to where his wife was living, and at this point they were going through a really bad divorce. I strongly suspect his local support network was entirely her friends, and they were turning their backs on him. I always took it as advice on being unafraid to remove the people who are dragging you down, and be confident that there are better ones out there.
Not really a quote, but a poem that I read in school. It’s called মৃত্যুঞ্জয় (The Death-defier). A rough translation is available here.
A couple of lines have stuck with me ever since.
‘‘যখন উদ্যত ছিল তোমার অশনি
তোমারে আমার চেয়ে বড়ো বলে নিয়েছিনু গণি
তোমার আঘাত-সাথে নেমে এলে তুমি
যেথা মোর আপনার ভূমি।’’
It translates roughly to
“When your thunder was ready to strike, I considered you mightier than me. But with your blows you came down. Here, with me, where I stand.”
It has taught me not to fear hardships, since nothing is ultimate. Everything looks scary from afar. But if we have the grit and determination to face it, all will crumble in front of our might. Even death has nothing on us, since out deeds and achievements will live on. This poem has given me inspiration in dark times. It has reminded me that all hope is not lost, no matter how grim everything might seem.
