If AC isnt an option, the way Ive gotten through summers without is opening one window on one side of the building, then another one on the opposite side. Then point a box fan facing outward of one window, and do your best to seal the gaps with some cardboard or whatever you have. This will create negative pressure in the building, drawing in a bunch of air from the opposite window.
it's the same reason a breezy summer day feels cooler, the air is still cooler than your body temp and draws away heat better than sitting in still air, plus its more evaporation if you're sweating hot. also indoors without AC during summer is an insulated oven.
would be nice with a test for a sealed fan like I described. the problem with that setup is that the negative pressure will try to pull from both windows, competing with the fan trying to blow out and not getting as much flow
I live in the southern US, and my house basically has this built-in. There’s a big fan in the middle of the house that blows air into the attic, so if you open a few windows and flip the fan on it creates a breeze through the whole house.
Make sure your sewer traps haven’t dried up though. I turned it on with the house closed up one day and it sucked in air through the shower drain in the guest bathroom that hadn’t been used in a while…
Attic fans are great. We'd run it when the sun went down to draw in the cool night air. After that we shut everything up and drew the blinds. The house would stay very cool until late the next afternoon. On super hot days we might have run the AC for a few hours in the late afternoon or evening.
Yeah, a whole-house fan. You turn it on in the evening and it expels the hot attic air from the top while sucking in the cool fresh air through open windows. It actually works really well and is much more energy efficient than AC. When it gets super hot you still need AC though.
This is surprising advice. I would have assumed it would make people break out.
Vaseline is a poor choice of moisturiser because it does not moisturise. It blocks air from entering your pores and I would have assumed this leads to clogged pores and hence acne.
It also forms a protective barrier for your skin, so nothing can contaminate it or grow on it and you don’t lose moisture to evaporation.
Also, pores don’t actually clog from stuff getting into them. That’s a common misconception that mostly comes from advertisements. What actually happens is your skin becomes inflamed (due to contaminants or bacterial growth or diet or hormones) and squeezes the pores shut. Blackheads aren’t dirt but are actually oxidized sebum, which is the oil your skin secretes.
EDIT Oh! Speaking of protective barriers, I also put it on my hands and forearms before work because I handle a lot of machine oil and that irritates my skin, causing rashes and itchiness.
An online article had a fascinating to me tidbit about a rich eccentric woman, who smothered her face in petroleum jelly:
As for Mrs Wood, her personal hygiene was said to be dreadful as she hadn’t bathed in several years. She did, however, take care of her face; smothering her skin in petroleum jelly every day.
When lawyer Morgan O’Brien first laid eyes on her, he told Cox that it was easy to tell she had once been incredibly attractive.
“Her complexion in spite of her age, was as creamy and pink and unwrinkled as any I have ever seen. It was link tinted ivory, her profile was like a lovely cameo,” Mr O’Brien said.
Interesting note: Along with hundreds of jars of petroleum jelly, it was clear Mrs Wood had a thing for Cuban cigars and snuff from Copenhagen.
A lot of this is stuff I picked up over a decade of dealing with chronic and painful acne, so I’d probably have to spend an evening finding different articles lol
But, yeah, acne comes from inside. It’s a more like an allergic reaction, where a normally helpful part of the immune system freaks the f out and causes harm. The bacteria that and normally lives harmlessly in our skin oil. And it’s not even always the cause! Sometimes bacteria doesn’t grow inside the zit at all, though it usually does and when it does it usually makes it a lot worse.
Ah man, this actually explains one of the reasons my body sucks at skin cycles and seems to produce too much skin. Thanks for the info, pity I can't get rid of the systemic inflammation completely.
Incidentally and a bit off topic, what's your take on salicylic acid, if you have one?
I do have to try some retinol. And that makes sense on the peroxide, that was not so helpful to me but the doctor did bill it as being better for whiteheads and other infected types, which I'm guessing is what your Vaseline mask helps with most.
Thanks! It's nice to see someone not just buying into the expensive cosmetics but going for the actual chemistry.
If you’re alive then you’re totally be within your rights to choose who to voluntarily help or donate something to. Don’t like the look of that homeless guy for whatever reason? Don’t give them money. You can be as racist or misogynistic or otherwise generally cunty as you like, and as long as it’s your personal money/time/organs and you keep quiet about your selection criteria you’re unlikely to have a problem.
However once you’re dead, if you want your dickish restrictions honoured then you have to write them down somewhere. And any organisation set up to manage organ donations that agrees to facilitate such restrictions is likely to find themselves on the pointy end of a discrimination lawsuit at some point.
What conditions are you imagining in which a donor is living but not aware of specifically who would be receiving the organ before agreeing? Tests need to be done to ensure compatibility, and a kidney is a lot to ask and probably wouldn't be agreed to unless it helps a loved one.
I feel like this is a strange premise whose goal is trying to try to move the line little by little until people are willing to say they're a little bit racist/sexist. Or until people are willing to admit they don't think others should have control over decisions made about their bodies. Be honest about your ends here instead of dreaming up fictions that make so little sense the answers are unproductive.
Right, but you also have examples like r/politics where white supremacists publications are whitelisted as legit sources because at least some of the power mods were fascists and there is nothing anyone can do. No recourse whatsoever.
I like moderation and appreciate moderators, but it’s definitely a problem on Reddit.
You‘re absolutely correct imo! But the reason for white supremacists (i.e.) being able to seize power is users being unwilling or unable to stand up for themselves or others.
On reddit (same as here I assume) users can demand mods being removed from subs and new ones instated instead.
The ultimate escalation is making a counter sub with a close enough name and just doing better. That and informing, posting about the issues will massively improve the situation.
It is the fundamental problem with democracy. It is fragile as people need to actively keep it alive since power hungry people will always abuse and undermine it.
Organizing, sharing and keeping your own ego in check in the process is very hard but the ultimate democratic task imo.
Because it is easy to think of all our own ideas to be best but they rarely are. We should concentrate on those we know are better and find others to help with theirs.
TL;DR: Evil powers rely ok the indifference/lethargy of the masses. Work towards positive change
I was a mod for a unpopular opinion sub aimed at unpopular political opinions. It was as bad as you could imagine. At most I’d only have one or so posts a month that i didn’t have to remove.
One of the best friends I’ve ever had banned me from one of his subs because I was fucking with him as a prank of sorts
The guy poured his time and energy into making any sub he was associated with being as relaxed, friendly, and free of bullshit as possible.
And the dude got death threats.
Reddit ran off the best mods, the ones that really cared. Most of those came here.
Most mods are like him, they’re trying to help build something good, and keep it that way. Even the ones that wield the ban hammer often tend to only do so for disruptive assholes like me.
So, that’s kinda just how meme culture works in larger communities. It’s extremely iterative. What happened is all those old posters are still around, they just switched to making content using older templates, and reminiscing about their favorites of the past.
This is a pretty big wave, this isn’t beans or something, this took over almost the whole Lemmyverse, so it’ll probably leave a minor lingering popularity. My guess is it should mostly be passed in another couple days or so, when people start running a little lower on content. The number of good ones is large, but fundamentally finite.
Meme culture is less the standard human-herd behavior and something quicker and more unitary. It’s best visualized as a huge flock of birds or school of fish. Who’s in charge and where is it going? No clue. It’s going there though.
I tried it just last month for a whole week before I ditched it back for Windows. Its just not ready for serious gamers. I am very anti microsoft so when it is ready, I will happily make the switch.
Peter Jackson’s lord of the rings trilogy extended edition. I bought a 4k tv and bluray player just for the 4k release last summer I think it was. (not the shitty hobbit)
We do an extended edition marathon at least twice a year, sometimes more if it’s been a tough time. Last time we watched them was the week before getting married, to distract me from my stress.
I’m currently rereading the books and once that’s done we’ll do our first marathon as marrieds! 😄
I simultaneously hate to think, and also am very proud, of how many times we must have seen them by now.
I had a dream, when I was a young teen, about being the single parent of a daughter (mother died in child birth). I remember the 18 years of raising that child better than most of my own childhood memories: taking her home from the hospital, first steps, signing up for elementary school, taking her to school every day, watching my child grow up. Getting into disagreements, teaching to bike, the panic of the first day of her period (she tried to hide it because she thought she’d be in trouble). High school, school clubs, prom, college applications. We got into a disagreement on her 18th, and she told me I was a terrible paren, that I’d failed even being friends with her, which was the opposite of how I thought it was going. She appeared in the front door with a suitcase, and walked out stating she’d never see me again, and the dream ended. To this day it still shakes me, but not as hard as it did when I woke up that day, broken for being a bad parent that I didn’t see.
That’s crazy. Yeah this was before inceptions release by a few years, and I didn’t see the TNG episode till 10 years later. Now everyone I tell this to jokes I’ve watched/played some game in Rick & Morty or something?
I’ve found that hot and active sorting do not create the most enjoyable feed experience for me. I currently have my sorting set to top>6 hours, which I like much better. It means my feed does not change that much over time, so if you’re opening Lemmy frequently for a couple of minutes of browsing, it doesn’t really work. But I generally only come here during my commute, so twice a day for a longer period of browsing, and it works really well for that.
In the settings is a “Migrate subreddits” button which you can load in your multi Reddit of all your subscriptions and it’ll show you subs on lemmy that are an exact or close match to easily subscribe
American cheese is not a flavor. American cheese is a blend of cheese, fat, and emulsifying agents. if there's cheddar in the blend, it'll taste mostly like cheddar, but less of it because it's only, like, half cheddar.
The important part of the American cheese, in figuring out how to use it, is the emulsifiers.
My preferred use case is using a slice of American cheese in mac and cheese, alongside some other cheese (I love Gouda) for flavor. Or like four other cheeses, whatever. Sometimes I mix in a tiny bit of cream cheese or mascarpone or a little milk, which gets emulsified into a sauce thanks to the American cheese, and makes the whole situation creamier. And then I season the whole situation well, especially if I added that last ingredient, to bring out the flavor of the cheeses.
Now, that's not a real, advanced mac and cheese. I could be making a mornay or something. But I'm lazy and I don't really keep butter in the house. So I cheat. Pro chefs might also use other emulsifying agents to control the flavor and chemistry better, rather than just chucking in a slice of some american blend.
Curated should be one or more filter sets that can be set by instance admins or users. Instance Curated lists are available to all users, personal are, personal.
