Interesting_Test_814, in Anyone else missing posts in smaller Lemmy communities because they are overshadowed by the popular ones?

Yeah, I’ve actually just unsubscribed from !memes because otherwise it was the only community to appear in my subscribed feed. One thing reddit did well and I miss on lemmy was giving visiblility to posts on smaller subscribed communities when sorting by hot

makanimike, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

Not my life because it was a comment on Reddit (at least I think it wasn’t quoted from anything else). But I loved it and I remember it years later still.

As my father told me, There are only three useless things in this world. Nuns’ nipples, bishops’ balls and an employer’s praise without a raise.

dudebro, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

“If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you always got.”

Usually comes to mind when people are waiting around for others to solve their problems for them.

This reminds me of one my favorites.

“Your current system is perfectly designed to create your current results” - CGP Grey

Anomalous_Llama, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

“Not everything that counts can be counted”

My high school environmental science teacher.

PowerSeries,

Also check out the book “seeing like a state” if you want a whole book version of that quote, including examples in forestry, city design and education.

Iliveonsaturdays,

Oh this is a great one. I was once in a job, where we were introduced to a new system that was designed to count successes. The problem was, that it was a job where we worked with people and everything we did couldn’t be quantified. The new system only put value on what could be counted so 80% of our work became invisible and “worthless”. Great times.

ChickenButt, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

Decide what you’re gonna do before you do it.

When I was like 8, a liftee at my local ski hill told me that as I dangled from the chairlift about 5 feet off the ground because I waffled getting on the lift.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice…n…n… we can’t get fooled again. — GWB

zabadoh, in Is it normal for a person to "feel" less as they get older?

If you read up on how our brains age, it’s basically pruning neuron branches. While this is a good thing up to a point, the pruning process continues well past our brains’ peak performance because evolution is done with you at that point, I.e. you had your kids by then.

the_third, in Is it normal for a person to "feel" less as they get older?

Short comment because mobile: You’ve described a thing I’ve been thinking about and grasping to get back since maybe two or three years. Thank you.

Pulptastic, in What's something you'd change in men's fashion, given the chance?

Variation and color. I have the choice.of three minutely different collars and it can be black, blue, or gray. I want tangerine, asymmetric, with an ascot.

There’s no room on Mars for limp dicks.

It’s a quote for a horrible 90s indie film that’s always struck with me for some reason. My social group and I have since taken this quote as an absolute/truism that gets referenced whenever a situation calls for absolute certainty. Because as we all know, there’s no room on Mars for limp dicks.

Bad Girls From Mars (1991) if I am not mistaken

Dantpool, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?
@Dantpool@lemmy.world avatar

When you fire that first shot, no matter how right you feel, you have no idea who’s going to die! You don’t know whose children are going to scream and burn! How many hearts will be broken! How many lives shattered! How much blood will spill until everybody does what they were always going to have to do from the very beginning: Sit — down — and — talk!

Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor

amenotef,
@amenotef@lemmy.world avatar

For these long dialogues my favorite Doctor.

CopernicusQwark,

That was such a captivating speech. Although he may have had some weak episodes (as does any Doctor), if you need someone to give a captivating direct, Capaldi's Doctor can't be beat!

skogens_ro, in Why do Gezendong-style-tankies support Putin and Xi-Xinpin so much ?

They're authoritarian and they hate the west. Of course they're appealing to communists.

Western commies idolising brutal authoritarian regimes is nothing new.

wagoner, in given how little one vote matter, it seems to me that stripping felons of their right to vote is both petty and counterproductive if the point was to reform them into civic minded individuals ?

There are already enough potential voters who have been imprisoned, not the future, such that they could tip the balance. If you’re not sure if this is case, just look at how hard the GOP acts to block reinstatement of voting rights for ex felons.

Levsgetso, in Why do Gezendong-style-tankies support Putin and Xi-Xinpin so much ?

Because for them hate for the west comes first and foremost, and after that comes their ideology. That’s why anyone who opposes the west is good in their eyes.
