Candelestine, in Does anyone here knows a thing or two about gasoline lighters?

… I kinda hope you’re joking. You didn’t actually put automotive gasoline in it, did you?

bi_tux,
@bi_tux@lemmy.world avatar

No, my first language is german and in german lighter fluid is called Feuerzeugbenzin (lighter gasoline)

markr, in Those who tried Linux and went back to Windows, what caused you to go back to Windows?

Linux desktops are horrible. I like linux servers a lot, I have several running in my homelab.

Anticorp,

Say fucking what? When was the last time you tried KDE or Gnome? Gnome is a beautiful masterpiece that blows Windows and Mac OS desktops out of the water.

peter,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Do they have an equivalent of ClearType yet?

markr,

It’s my opinion. Part of the problem is ‘which desktop’. As long as I can ssh into a Linux system I’m happy. The guis are clunky, but I’ll admit to not having tried all of them or the absolute latest versions. Also, and I likely ought to have mentioned this, in my homelab almost all ‘systems’ are vms, so the desktop gui has to function well in a virtual environment and has to at least try to have a decent rdp implementation.

richneptune,

It’s really not a problem anymore. Look at a distro like Mint, compare the lightweight xfce version versus the full fat Gnome cinnamon. They both look the same on the surface using the same theme, all apps work, look and behave fine over all versions, yet you’ve got the option between “small and snappy” or “pretty and high end” which works much better than turning off the animations in Windows.

I’ve been an on/off Linux desktop user for years and now is just a comfy time to be a Linux user. All websites work, most of my Steam/Epic and GOG library just works with no messing, the various software stacks we use day to day are there, mature and “just work”.

Anticorp,

Many DE have received substantial improvements over the last couple of years. It sounds like you’re really looking for something lightweight, more than you are something that is fully featured. I don’t have much experience with the lightweight Linux DE, because when I need performance I just use command line like you do. I’m sure if you did some searching, you could find a really snappy DE, but it doesn’t sound very important for your use case. Definitely do check out some of the full-featured desktops though if you ever decide to use Linux as a primary PC. Several of them are really slick now.

Probably need to replace the wick

TheDubz87, in Does anyone here knows a thing or two about gasoline lighters?

You probably need to pull the wick through more and trim it. Zippos should come with a long wick within it for that purpose.

Also I hope you mean butane and not gasoline lol

Fondots,

What he needs is lighter fluid, not butane or gasoline.

Butane is a gas that’s stored under pressure as a liquid, there’s no way to add that to a Zippo unless you get one with a butane insert (which he doesn’t have since his has a wick)

Lighter fluid (which is basically/mostly naphtha) is a flamable liquid used in zippo type lighters.

There’s also charcoal lighter fluid which is still another flamable liquid that’s usually either mineral spirits or alcohol based.

TheDubz87,

Thanks, I kinda spurt that out without thinking. My old torch lighter was butane. Couldn’t remember what it was that came in the tin can.

son_named_bort, in what band/song are you kinda ashamed you listening to as a kid?

Courtesy of the Red White and Blue by Toby Keith. Post 9-11 America was weird.

carbotect, in what band/song are you kinda ashamed you listening to as a kid?

My taste in music mostly stayed the same since childhood. I just like more genres now.

I am really into EDM, old EDM songs from popular subgenres oftentimes feel “outdated” in a sense.

For non-EDM enjoyers, its all beeps and boops anyways tho.

ratboy,
@ratboy@lemmy.ml avatar

I’m curious what old songs you might be thinking of? I was a wannabe raver in middle school and an actual one at the end of highschool lol. I may know what’s up

carbotect,

It’s hard to remember song names, because most EDM tracks are non-lyrical.

For example in dubstep, most trends age poorly.

Skrillex- inspired stuff or “Zomboy - Terror Squad” copycats sound really oversaturated nowadays. Even “hip and cool” commercials made some bootleg versions of “Ruffneck Bass” and “Equinox” from Skrillex.

Also samples and sound design from many EDM tracks 10+ years ago feel really unoriginal from a modern listener’s perspective.

There are obviously also a lot of exeptions. Old stuff from “Tha Trickaz”, “Savant”, “Xilent” etc etc all still hold up imo.

ratboy,
@ratboy@lemmy.ml avatar

Lol aw man I’m definitely getting old; I remember when Skrillex came out and kinda ruined the genre tbh, it was so totally different when it first emerged, it actually sounded like dub. So I’m not familiar with any of those guys, they were after my time.

I think it probably depends on the listener but yeah, if I try to listen to most mid 80s hip hop, it’s so rudimentary that it’s really hard for me to a tuslly get into. Like Run DMC, or NWA. I can get into NWA but the novelty runs out quickly so I can only listen to them very rarely. But there are a lot of newer bands that I hear and say “I’ve already heard x y and z do this better” so it’s hard to get excited about new stuff too. If you are a really avid music listener I think it has to take something exceptional coming out to really get impressed by

Trashcan, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

Two plus two equals five for large values of two

Better to do it than live with the fear of it, I always say

Sandman89,

As someone with both a fear of death and depression, this made me chuckle a bit

lateraltwo,

It’s from the first law trilogy of books, which I highly recommend if that made you chuckle

RBWells, in Is it normal for a person to "feel" less as they get older?

I don’t know about normal, but I have more than 50 years and not jaded yet - the dish soap making bubbles still delights me, the beautiful sky makes me stop and stare, the smell of the night blooming jasmine, the world is just so incredible I don’t know how anybody can really get used to it. Like, the fact that you get to exist at all, with consciousness and a physical body, it’s not something I can take for granted.

Now if you mean am I more busy or distracted now? I think again the answer is no but I didn’t like childhood and have enjoyed being an adult.

I would suggest a dream journal and trying to lucid dream, if your waking self has lost its sense of wonder

ProfezzorDarke,

See, and that guy is proof not everyone get’s recessive depression. I wish you dear luck staying like this, dude.

anon,

the dish soap making bubbles still delights me

I’m guilty of being an old-ass adult and buying myself a disney bubble machine when I saw it on the spot for myself (and the dogs).

timeisart, in What genres of music do Lemmites enjoy?

almost exclusively electronic music, just can’t seem to get enough of it. (ambient, downtempo, drum & bass, dub, electro, glitch, goa trance, house, idm, psybass, psychill, psytrance, synthwave, techno). I’d be happy to try to give recommendations of any of these if you ask.

also love funk like Parliament/Funkadelic and some electronic focused jambands like STS9 & Lotus

MisterMonster, (edited )
@MisterMonster@lemmy.world avatar

What are some of your ambient recommendations? I was just listening to Tim Hecker’s Konoyo, also dig stuff like Global Communication, Boards of Canada, Grouper, Human Mesh Dance, Stars of the Lid, Biosphere.

Really into a electronic psychedelic cumbia genre that goes by Psicodelica Selvática (and other names) : Dengue Dengue Dengue!, Chancha Via Circuito, Yeahman, Son Rompe Pera, El Remolón’s Selva really hits the spot too.

timeisart,

I prefer my ambient to have a psychedelic aspect to it instead of just pure drone, so probably my favorite ambient artist is Ishq, namely his albums Orchid, Sama, And Awake, Bloom, and Lotus. Sinepearl and Chandanam are also artists that have a similar sound to Ishq. also check out Woob’s Repurpose album

getting into more of the psybient/psychill genre than pure ambient, mostly everything on Ultimae Records is gold imo (Solar Fields, Carbon Based Lifeforms, Cell, H.U.V.A. Network, Sync24, etc.)

lps2,

Spacebass over on my end : G Jones, EPROM, Alix Perez, Ivy Lab, Of The Trees, Chee, Tsuruda, ISOxo, Culprate, Lab Group

This song has been on solid repeat for me lately GATZB - Get Down

UsernameLost, in what band/song are you kinda ashamed you listening to as a kid?

Mumford and Sons. Their first few albums were unique, and a nice change from everything else. Then they turned around and shit on everyone that liked their music before turning into Coldplay

quinnly,

Their first few albums were already just generic folk pop but if they were your first generic folk pop band I can see it being a pretty novel sound. And I’ll agree that their earlier stuff was better than their later stuff, but it still wasn’t very good or very original

LeylaaLovee,
@LeylaaLovee@lemmy.fmhy.ml avatar

You know something about them that fucks with me? They’re British, not American. It’s not that I care that much, but considering the image of the band is based in American country makes it feel odd lol.
