cwagner, in given how little one vote matter, it seems to me that stripping felons of their right to vote is both petty and counterproductive if the point was to reform them into civic minded individuals ?

if the point was to reform them into civic minded individuals ?

You are talking about the USA, right? I don’t think anyone sees the USA prison system as something targeting reform and rehabilitation.

Felons don’t lose their right to vote in most of Europe, and that right is actually seen as a human right by the EU.

nivenkos,

But if that were really true why ever release them at all? Why not go the full China approach with capital punishment and organ donation?

I think it’s just a legacy from older laws, especially against gangs in smaller communities, etc.

cwagner,

What? Just because they want people punished instead of rehabilitated does not mean that everyone should get capital punishment. What kind of weird straw man is that?

And the US does have capital punishment.

bilboswaggings,

Tbf china and north korea are not as bad as the media portrays them as

Prison camp = prison

Slave labour = prison labour

Both disproportionately imprison and kill minorities, but isn’t that also what the US does

Kichae,

Given the rights prisoners have in many other countries, it might be better to say that things are just as bad in the US as the media paints other countries.

Because, uh, prison labour is pretty fucking awful, especially when considering that y'all gots them private prisons down there.

bilboswaggings,

I’m Finnish, so I know the situation in the US is bad But yeah media likes to hide the country’s problems in most countries

OrkneyKomodo,
@OrkneyKomodo@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Although not in the EU anymore, I think the UK has managed to find some way of preventing prisoners from voting across the years.

cwagner,

For Details : Disfranchisement#United_Kingdom

The “some way” seems to mostly be “fuck your rulings, court”.

SilentStorms,
@SilentStorms@lemmy.fmhy.ml avatar

The US is nuts. You can vote from prison in Canada

Pea666,
@Pea666@lemmy.world avatar

Same thing in the Netherlands. You can have someone vote for you in your stead.

OprahsedCreature,

I believe the same is true in Vermont and Maine, but 2 out of 50 isn’t great.

If you can take away the right to vote as punishment for a crime, and make anything a crime, then you can take away anyone’s right to vote. This reinforces the concept of the ‘precariat’.

hayander,

Also the same in Australia. In fact, it’s required by law for them to vote (as it is for all eligible voters)

Soylentcolaispeople, in given how little one vote matter, it seems to me that stripping felons of their right to vote is both petty and counterproductive if the point was to reform them into civic minded individuals ?

When you also can escalate certain crimes (like cannabis) to target portions of the population it gets pretty dystopian already.

Locuralacura, in What is the craziest thing that's ever happened in your life?

A. Riding a freight train from Midwest to California. 3 day trip, very crazy.

B. Taking a motorcycle trip to a small tribal village in Thailand, smoking bong rips with a Buddhist monk, slaughtering a pig and eating it raw, drinking homemade rice hootch until blacking out. Hiking around drunkenly accidentally ending up in Burma, running away from the Burmese military. Them chasing me until I got back to the village.

C. Getting bitten by a unknown spider in Nicaragua, swollen, blistering boil, feverish, infection. Taking a bus to san salvador, then quezaltenango Guatemala, doctor cutting a blister open and pushing out the puss, excruciating pain. Then after days of it not healing, going to a local hotspring, dunking my arm in steaming hot lithium water, and basically watching the infection fall out in one massive puss ball leaving a gaping hole in my arm.

Notyou,

Your adventures seems to be growing in adventure and danger. I would take a break and have a staycation somewhere.

I didn’t even know hot lithium water was a thing. I’m guessing there are some benefits, but I wonder what happened to make the puss ball fall off your arm.

Locuralacura,

I’m old now, I don’t even drink beer anymore. I don’t go somewhere unless I already know someone there. My adventure days are behind me, hopefully. Thanks tho.

KittenBiscuits,

That last one… (o.O)

S50nb, in What are your favorite leftist podcasts?

Working class history

Popular front even tho it isnt what i would call lefty but it does cover interesting conflict/protest stuff

Tigerking, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

It takes some time to build a routine, getting to that point requires effort. Once you’re comfortable and know your limits I personally get a lot of satisfaction from pushing my body to get faster, stronger, more agile and so on. You might feel exhausted but you know you can keep going and your body will respond.

Together with all other health benefits you get from it makes you feel good about yourself after a workout which translates to better confidence, mood and more.

chrismarquardt, in What genres of music do Lemmites enjoy?
@chrismarquardt@feddit.de avatar

Right now: Steely Dan’s album „Aja“

kaupas24, in How do you enjoy listening to digital content? Speakers? Headphones? Earbuds?

I always listen to music on my Sony wh1000xm4 headphones. Added a bit of an eq tweak to them so they're less "boring". Imo they're fantastic, though I haven't tried anything non Bluetooth in the higher end spectrum of headphones.

DominicDeligann, in What genres of music do Lemmites enjoy?
@DominicDeligann@lemmy.ml avatar

rock/metal and most derivatives. for example metallica, ac/dc, iris and others.

worfamerryman, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

It’s more the feeling of satisfaction and less a feeling of pleasure.

Working out is not a pleasurable thing, it’s hard, tiring, and painful.

But you see positive changes in your body, you feel better day to day and you know you are adding years on to your life.

This is what makes it enjoyable. But it will not be like this on day one. It will be like this maybe after 2-4 weeks of doing it consistently.

Also you have to eat right. If your just eating junk you may not feel as good.

GlowingLantern, in What replacement for each major social media do you use
@GlowingLantern@feddit.de avatar

Matrix is the best Messenger/Discord replacement, because you can still bridge content to other services, if they don’t want to switch to Matrix. Plus, it’s distributed like XMPP or ActivityPub so you can self-host, use different providers and apps.

Edit: Lemmy also uses Matrix for encrypted DMs

Lemmy also uses Matrix for encrypted DMs

that’s sick! didn’t know that, oughta check that out then. is there anywhere they discuss/explain that?

GlowingLantern,
@GlowingLantern@feddit.de avatar

It’s not fully integrated in the sense that you can use your Lemmy account to message over Matrix. Rather, you can add your existing Matrix handle to your profile and then a fancy “Send Secure Message” button is displayed under your profile, which just links to your Matrix account. I like the simplicity of it, as it leaves the security aspects to apps and services that have considerably more resources than Lemmy has at the moment (Element and Matrix are being used and improved by different governments, militaries, and other organisations).

EDIT: Element has started using Rust for their back-end implementation, so maybe Lemmy can use that library one day as well.

Sikeen,

still really cool tho - them integrating other open standard

erusuoyera, in Hey Lemmy, what are your favorite ear worms?

boonhet, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

Lifting weights is fun and feels pleasurable. Cardio feels like I’m trying to get somewhere but I’ll never arrive. It’s frustrating. I think it’s because I have ADHD and, well, most monotonous activities are hella hard to keep up for any period of time. Doesn’t help that I’ve been off my meds for a year since developing high blood pressure.

For cardio, I’ve tried different things to trick myself into doing it. Some worked better than others. I used to do long and hard warmups before lifting weights. Of course it had a negative effect on the weightlifting itself, but it was good for my health. To increase effort, I just added 5 minutes each session. Started off cycling 15 minutes at a leisurely pace on the stationary bike, and towards the end I was doing 45 at a much harder pace. Watching the average power climb up each week was fun, it was like a game to me. And the weightlifting at the end of it was the reward to make my monkeybrain accept the annoyance that is cardio.

Of course, then I had surgery (nothing major, a scheduled quality of life surgery, septoplasty to be specific, but I was told to lay off any exercise for 2+ weeks) and then a month later I injured myself. So now it’s been over a year again. Not because my injury was very serious, but because it’s incredibly hard to start, maintain, or re-start healthy habits with ADHD. Incredibly easy to start, maintain and re-start bad ones though -.-

Another thing is, pick a podcast (preferably something funny or informative, not depressing), put it on, and go on a walk. Not the same as running, but on a physical activity for your health scale, if being sedentary is 0% and running is 100%, walking is at least 80% if you ask me. Way closer to running than to doing nothing.

I understand the last bit is difficult for people living in unwalkable cities, but for those who can do it, it feels way better than most other forms of exercise, because you’re getting dosed with happy hormones while you’re walking thanks to the podcast.

7heo,
@7heo@lemmy.ml avatar

Also got ADHD and the way I managed enjoying running was listening to music (for the rhythm) and “zoning out” (aka meditating). What also works out is focusing on an idea you wanna think about, but you run (pun intended) the risk of getting to interesting findings and needing to note them ASAP…

Drusas, in What is the craziest thing that's ever happened in your life?

Probably living through the Tohoku earthquake disaster. That was more than a little chaotic.

colonial, in What replacement for each major social media do you use
@colonial@lemmy.world avatar

I was only ever really into Reddit, which Lemmy has handily replaced.

  • I technically have an Instagram, but I scrubbed it and removed the app to stop me from doomscrolling and giving Meta ad revenue.
  • Microblogging like Twitter or Tumblr never really appealed to me.
  • I was born after 2000, so Facebook doesn’t exist in my world.

I do use Discord, but mainly because all my friends and family are on there. I would love if a federated alternative like Matrix became the standard. Hopefully the EU’s Digital Markets Act will help - if I understand it correctly, Discord and other platforms will be forced to allow seamless bridges (which currently will get you banned) under interoperability requirements.
