MargotRobbie, in Whaf do you think of hosting an AMA with John Oliver to make Lemmy/kbin officially a viable Reddit replacement?
@MargotRobbie@lemmy.world avatar

Other thought: I think in recent years, AMAs have been trending towards decentralization towards the individual subreddit level anyways, because neat people want to interact with groups that would be interested in what they are saying, otherwise they are going to get drowned out by the noise in something big like r/iama.

Which means that the only people who are going to do an AMA on a big, general subreddits are mostly people who have a lot of money and influence to sell things to the biggest audience, like to promote a major blockbuster, for example.

So, if we have a big Last Week Tonight fan community on Lemmy, yeah, let's welcome John Oliver there, but he's not going to come to help ex-redditors spite promote Lemmy, what's in it for him?

Since decentralization is the way forward for the Fediverse, AMAs should be decentralized toward the community level anyways, and maybe with a dedicated community to aggregate them across the Fediverse, having a centralized instance solely for AMAs is what led reddit down its current path.

fruitywelsh,

I mean, being a death nail on a corporation’s IPO for spite and content is on brand for him

MargotRobbie,
@MargotRobbie@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, but why would he want to jump straight into the mess instead of watching from the sidelines and write jokes about it?

Can you imagine the questions that's going to be asked on Lemmy if he actually does do an AMA?

  • "Uh, what do you think about reddit closing its API access so there's no third party apps any more"
  • "How do you feel that reddit userbase is spamming with your pictures instead posting normal content?"
  • "Horse sized duck or duck sized horse?"
  • "Upboat to fuck spez am I right?"
  • "More sexy pictures pls."

See?

gun, in I need to survive for 3 days without pooping, and eating as little as possible. I can pee, but not very often. It can't take up too much space. What food do I pack?
@gun@lemmy.ml avatar

You are either camping with other people or are in some kind of military activity. You don’t want to poop because you are embarrassed of how it smells and the people you were with on a previous occasion gave you an extremely hard time over it. Did I guess right? Please, poop in a hole or something, whatever it takes

You left out fetish, phobia, paid orgy, trying to convince someone that you live on a diet of sunlight, and stranded in a submarine as potentials.

This post is gold. To parrot a couple others, anti-diarrhea medicine always locks me up for a day or two

risottinopazzesco, in I need to survive for 3 days without pooping, and eating as little as possible. I can pee, but not very often. It can't take up too much space. What food do I pack?

Just poop as much as possible before leaving. For three days you can fast, it’s very much doable.

I was here when the 3 days without pooping post dropped.

DubiousInterests,

I would say try to poop just before you leave to and fast for an extra 24-48 hours beforehand too if they can manage.

Domille, in Why does Lemmy feel so fresh compared to Reddit?

I feel like people who moved to Lemmy from reddit are really incentivized to help it grow, so I am constantly seeing encouragements for people to interact / upvote / post content, which is great. I think that the community here is very motivated, and so even though there are less people, you get more engagement.

god,
@god@sh.itjust.works avatar

This is a huge part of it. People are in "this is my new home, I'm gonna wash the dishes just this once!". I imagine things will calm down later.

Domille,

yeah, that's pretty much what happened with Mastodon, as far as I can tell. There are still folks there, but it is much quieter now vs when I first joined it.

esty,
@esty@lemmy.ca avatar

i dont feel that its quiet, more that people have settled in, the users that stuck with masto use it religiously just like how people used twitter

swoos,

This

Pmmeyourtoaster,

I've experienced this as well and have enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.

lvl100magikarp,

Yep, I try to upvote everything and comment as much as I can. I’m still confused about how to post to specific instances on Jerboa though. Like I’m typing the name but it’s not showing up in the dropdown

The most discouraging thing that happened was that when I wrote a long and thoughtdul comment and press send, Jerboa gives me the “java type blabla” error, and I lost everything I typed. Then I don’t wanna type it again and I just give up on commenting

Hopefully these issues will be fixed soon! As I understand it it’s not even an issue with Jerboa specifically.

Varyag,
@Varyag@lemm.ee avatar

I've gotten to the habit of Ctrl+A and Ctrl+C my comments right before hitting Reply, just in case that happens. Luckily, it's been happening less and less, at least on desktop browser. Hopefully Jerboa gets to that point soon, too.

I dont have any advice. Just wanted to day I was here before the reason was revealed.

I just want to be a part of this history. Also maybe like protein shakes?

@Phantom_Engineer@lemmy.ml avatar

My only advice would be to have a back up plan. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail, and there’s no guarantee you won’t get an unpleasant surprise. You say you’ll use the toilet if you’re about to shit yourself, but what if you can’t make it and do end up shitting yourself because you put it off so long?

KittenBiscuits,

OP is literally asking us the most efficient way to get backed up. What other backup plan could they need?

OP, can you get hold of any stimulant appetite suppressants? They'll pull double doody for you. You'll eat less and be constipated.

Celebrity worship was how we got to modern corporate reddit in the first place. I'd like to keep it away for a while longer.

Go preorder tickets for "Barbie".

Why would he give up the free advertising?

VoxAdActa, in What are the best crafts/meida/things to make and sell? as a sort of hobby.
@VoxAdActa@kbin.social avatar

A good friend of mine made good money turning glass bottles of various types into bongs. The best sellers were the marble soda bottles with unlicensed Hello Kitty labels, but Sanrio C&D'd him pretty fucking quick.

Otherwise, I can say for 100% certainty that the answer is absolutely not pretty rocks wrapped up in wire, aka, "jewelry". Every lazy wannabe craft fair monarch is pumping out these low-effort bits of trash to the point that at least a third of the booths at any craft fair I go to is just stuffed to the gills with them.

This isn't niche at all, but gbatemp is fantastic. Lots of emulation, modding, romhacking, general gaming discission, etc.

Disasters come in threes. One sub down, better wait until the next 2 explode too

There's no advice that's going to be effective in stopping poop in those circumstances...
