What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

I always loved browsing such posts on reddit, so thought I should make one on lemmy too

Edit: Usually these kind of posts only used to have excerpts from books or ancient proverbs, but now I am seeing a lot more quotes from shows/movies/games are also resonating with people. It’s pretty cool to see.

eighty,

If you want to travel fast, go alone; but if you want to travel far, go together.

It’s one of those African proverbs with an unknown origin but their emphasis on community has always been a guiding principle for me.

tryagain,

Love this

dudebro,

I like that, a lot.

Not sure where it is from, misquoting and probably butchering the quote:

“If you think a headache is bad, break your arm then the headache doesn’t feel so bad anymore”

Basically if something is bad, but something worse comes along, then the bad thing doesn’t seem so bad anymore

Update:

Because this has got me thinking, going to update when I quote source ( also don’t want to double post)

Heard in Mass Effect 2, Thane quoting:

“When all the world is overcharged with inhabitants, then the last remedy of all is war, which provideth for every man, by victory or death.” Thomas Hobbes

@caveman@lemmy.world avatar

In a similar vein, this is my fave (which I consistently get wrong but the gist is enough) “I’ve lived through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened.” Mark Twain

bfg9k,
@bfg9k@lemmy.world avatar

“Don’t worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum.”

My second favourite: “Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of '99

Wear Sunscreen.

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it.

A long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists

Whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable, than my own meandering experience.”

“It gets easier. Every day it gets a little easier but you gotta do it every day, that’s the hard part, but it does get easier”.

As far as I’m concerned, everyone owns themselves watching Bojack Horseman.

LambChop,

I really tried to get into Bojack after seeing so many recommendations online, but just couldn’t.

I like animation, I like clever dialogue and introspective drama. I’m fine with anti-heroes.

But I just didn’t like any of the characters enough to care about their issues and how, or if they would be resolved.

What is the key takeaway that I’m missing by not watching?

xhieron,
@xhieron@lemmy.world avatar

There’s a lot to take from Bojack, but I’m not sure I could pin down one sentiment to wrap up the whole show. Frequently, it’s just a good comedy. At other times, the show is an exploration of depression and self-destruction, and I think that’s what makes it resonate with so many people.

For what it’s worth, the first season is generally the worst in the show by a fair margin. It has a few high points, but I think most fans appreciate that the show demands more commitment than many are willing to devote. It wasn’t until into the second season that things started to really hit the highs that made the show stick with people.

LambChop,

Thanks for that.

I may give it one more shot.

scubbo,

Typo sort-of accurate? :P

scubbo,

Fun fact - my childhood nickname (and online handle) was used (with permission) by the great man himself! (As the name of a hearty military soup :P )

LambChop,

That is fun!

Did you know him personally? What’s the story?

scubbo,

I wish! Nah, I went to the Discworld Convention when I was 8 or so, and met him at one of the book-signing events. Though even in the few minutes that I spent chatting with him there, he was very obviously a warm, kind, generous man. GNU Terry Pratchett.

LambChop,

That’s awesome!

And you get to live on forever as soup in the Discworld.

fubo,

How many ages hence shall this our lofty scene be acted over, in states unborn and accents yet unknown?

Shakespeare, Julius Caesar, Act 3, scene 1.

But … I first encountered this line in the shooter game Silpheed on the Apple IIgs, long before I’d read any Shakespeare.

provisional,

“When in doubt, draw a distinction.” - Neil Postman

Valmond,

How would that translate in a simpler English for a non native tired person?

provisional,

When it comes to communicating well in English, it’s easy to get stuck between words that seem very similar. For example: poll vs vote, citizen vs civilian, politician vs representative. When you don’t know the difference between words, try to find what makes them different from each other.

For example: a poll can be an opinion poll, but a vote is only for an election. So all votes are a kind of poll, but not all polls are specifically votes.

Another example: a politician politically represents the will of their constituents. A representative may represent any company, organization, or government. So representatives generally represent groups of people, but politicians specifically represent their constituents in government.

Another example: what’s the difference between plausible and reasonable? Something reasonable means it’s logical or can be reached through reasoning. Something plausible is a story that makes sense, a good enough story that could actually happen. So something reasonable needs to have a relatively consistent logical thread to it, whole something plausible needs to make enough sense as to be possibly true.

When you are asking if something is plausible, you are asking if the story is true or if the reasons given make enough sense to make the story true. When you are asking if something is reasonable, you are asking if using your reasoning ability, you would come to the same conclusions.

Valmond,

Yeah but that didn’t help at all 😅

deadbeef79000,

If you can’t choose between two things, describe what’s different between the two things.

E.g. I’m hungry, I could choose an apple or a sandwich.

Hmm. An apple is crisp and refreshing, the sandwich is dry and will make me thirsty.

button_masher,

My attempt: When in doubt, try find what is the thing and what’s not the thing.

IthronMorn,

May the bridges I burn light the way.

Valmond,

Yeah it sure is inspiring but how the hell can we follow you if you burned the damn bridge!!

MementoMori,

venusenvy47,

I like the silly related quote:

Build a man a fire, and he’ll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he’ll be warm for the rest of his life.

How many lives shattered! How much blood will spill until everybody does what they were always going to have to do from the very beginning: Sit — down — and — talk!

Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor

For these long dialogues my favorite Doctor.

CopernicusQwark,

That was such a captivating speech. Although he may have had some weak episodes (as does any Doctor), if you need someone to give a captivating direct, Capaldi's Doctor can't be beat!
