mondo_brondo, in What are your thoughts on the concept of having faith in a Higher Power but choosing to distance oneself from established religious doctrines?

I would say it’s cooler to be a good person for the sake of it rather than being a good person because you fear hell or desire some sort of reward (eternity in heaven).

jedi,

Yeah, I mean what if heaven and hell do not exist?

WarmSoda,

Well, then they don’t exist.

Zippit,

It’s better if they don’t exist. Just believe that you are energy that can’t be destroyed. That way, you’ll live forever, like molecules or whatever. I try to think of it that way? Just cruising around the globe or visiting other galaxies? Onward to the next adventure? (Sorry drunkish)

jedi,

I still believe that everything has its creator, and creator has its own creator.

Tattorack, in What are your thoughts on the concept of having faith in a Higher Power but choosing to distance oneself from established religious doctrines?
@Tattorack@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t see much difference. You’re still choosing to believe in a fairy tale, you just don’t like the current available stories.

jedi,

I have a different perspective—I don’t believe that God intervenes in anything. If there is a God/Gods, I think they simply created the universe and set everything in motion.

intensely_human, in What are your thoughts on the concept of having faith in a Higher Power but choosing to distance oneself from established religious doctrines?

Well let me ask you this: how specifically would it not be okay?

jedi,

Well let me ask you this: how specifically would it not be okay?

Great question! For me, it’s not about it being okay or not in the traditional sense. I just feel that spirituality can be a personal journey that doesn’t necessarily require the framework of an organized religion. It’s like taking a road trip without a map - sometimes the discoveries you make on your own are the most meaningful. I believe in being a good human, guided by my own understanding of a higher power, morals, and the world around me. It’s about finding my own path and respecting others’ paths too. What’s your take on this?

Teknikal, in Would you choose invisibility or teleportation?

Teleportation even if it was line of sight based like in the Dishonored games I think it still wins.

GONADS125, in What are your thoughts on the concept of having faith in a Higher Power but choosing to distance oneself from established religious doctrines?

Independent religious beliefs outside the confines of religious establishments tend to be healthier, and you’re then free of the corruption and manipulation that inherently permeates all religions, due to our inherently flawed human nature.

Religious establishments are very much human inventions. Even if claims within religious canons are true, the religion and texts are all interpretations by deeply flawed human beings, and the rituals practiced were invented by them.

Religion can be used to manipulate and control, and there are individuals who will exploit it for their own self-interests within every religion.

Other than the supportive community that follows some religious institutions, I wholeheartedly believe that people are better off inwardly reflecting on their beliefs, rather than being told what to believe by deeply flawed and easily corruptible authority figures.

Their beliefs are no more demonstratably true than your personal spiritual beliefs.

I’m personally an atheist, but I’m not an anti-theist, and I am a huge advocate of specifically what you’re asking about. People should reflect on and develop their own independent spiritual beliefs.

jedi,

I strongly agree that religious establishments are creations of humans. Even if the claims within religious canons are true, the religion and texts are all interpretations by flawed human beings, and the rituals practiced were invented by them. Growing up in a religious family, I understand how easy it is to be indoctrinated into a certain faith. I believe that early exposure to religion can have a corrupting effect on our minds.

VanillaGorilla, in What are some of the best purchases of your life?

My rice cooker. Doesn't really matter which one. If you like rice, this will make your life better

hardypart,

It’s funny how every time someone asks this question there’s at least one guy in the comments praising their rice cooker, lol

TaleOfSam,

I also choose that guys rice cooker

MxM111, in Would you choose invisibility or teleportation?
@MxM111@kbin.social avatar

Clearly teleportation, because when you are invisible, you cannot see - your body let photons through.

justlookingfordragon, in Would you choose invisibility or teleportation?
@justlookingfordragon@lemmy.world avatar

My first instinct would have been to pick invisibility - I’m a total introvert and I do NOT enjoy having to deal with people, so knowing that noone sees me anyway sounds tempting.

… but then again, teleportation sounds even more tempting for the same reason. Need groceries? Teleport into a store after hours, grab some stuff, teleport back and enjoy the rest of the day undisturbed (and with a still full wallet) without having interacted with anyone. Need to run an errand, like sending a letter? Who needs the post office anyway when I can just teleport wherever the letter was supposed to go and stuff it into the recipient’s mailbox, then quickly teleport back…? I could sell the car since I would never need it again - no more traffic jams either. I would be on time for every appointment without having to rush. And there are a million smaller things too, like never having to worry about locking yourself out of the house.

Definitely teleportation for me.

jedi, in Would you choose invisibility or teleportation?

Teleportation, especially if you can take anyone with you. I’ll be traveling the world without passport and go back home anytime I want.

setsneedtofeed, in Would you choose invisibility or teleportation?
@setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world avatar

Teleportation. I suppose it would be somewhat limited by the fact that teleporting to a place where other people might be would be tricky, since I absolutely don’t want to be caught.

Even with hesitation to teleport to populated areas, the ability to teleport home would be massively useful as a utility. I could also teleport out of danger in an emergency. I wonder if I pick up a person would allow me to teleport them with me, in which case then it’s got hero potential too.

bakachu, in Would you choose invisibility or teleportation?

I think this depends on what invisible means. Does it mean no detectable signature - IR/thermal, scent, sound, etc.? Or just not on the visible light spectrum for humans? If not detectable at all, I think it would hold greater value for information gathering and have a lot of useful applications in hostage and other criminal situations, as well as state security through a very useful means of tradecraft. All that’s out the door if a couple of rottweilers can sniff me out though.

It’s a bit of a monkey’s paw question as having either power puts a huge burden of secrecy as well as the threat of danger on yourself and whomever you choose to share knowledge of it that with.

lvxferre, in Would you choose invisibility or teleportation?
@lvxferre@lemmy.ml avatar

Teleportation for sure. It covers all practical applications that I can see for invis, plus more.

aliceblossom, in Why has YouTube introduced support for multiple audio tracks for videos only now?

Since I haven’t seen any of the comments mention this yet…

I think the big reason is storage/bandwidth.

Digital audio is an interesting form of media because the size of an audio file is determined almost entirely by 1) how long it is and 2) the bitrate/quality and has a lot less to do with what the actual content is. Therefore, an audio track of a video that contains dialogue and music is pretty much the same size as one that only contains music. So, if you were to, for example, separate dialogue and music of a video into two tracks to allow a user adjust the volume of either independently of the other (an amazing user experience IMO) the storage size (and bandwidth usage) of the audio virtually doubles despite no “additional” content being added.

Multiple audio track is actually something I’ve wanted for forever, especially for watching stream on Twitch. But I think it’s a pretty hefty burden to place on the service, especially if a lot of people aren’t even going to use or notice it.

mlg, (edited ) in If you could custom make your *perfect* shoes, what features would they have?
@mlg@lemmy.world avatar

Sneakers/Tennis/Running shoes that have automatically pop/retracting heel wheels like Heelys

You lock your shoes together a certain way to engage the wheels which lock in place so you can skate around. When you’re done, you lock in the opposite direction which causes the wheels to eject and swing out to rest on the top of the shoe so it stays out of the way.

You get the ultimate tactical shoe that you can run and play sports in which also also double as Heelys when you need them to

Optionally, make the wheels electric powered as well lol

bdonvr, in Is Lemmy as a platform sustainable?

My instance of ~300 users (and uh, far less active ones) is costing me $223/year

I’ve had users donate about $25 so ~10% community funded and 90% admin funded.

That’s fine by me at the current cost. Though if we somehow got a bunch of new users I’d have to cut off signups at some point unless more donations rolled in. I could probably handle a sizeable increase in users first though.

Honytawk,

Why does it cost that much?

Are you hosting it on a hosting platform somewhere?

bdonvr,

$15/mo server rental, plus a few dollars to store backups on a separate service, object storage for media, email, and domain registration. Total $18.64

I have a home server that could easily handle it, but I wouldn’t want to put something so public on it.

ndsvw,
@ndsvw@feddit.de avatar

The costs surprises me, too…

I think, I red about the hosting situation of the German feddit.de (probably the 4th largest lemmy instance) and that they don’t take donations, because it’s “not that expensive”…

But thanks for being transparent…

Syringe,

If you’ve already got the infrastructure in place for other projects, it can drop costs dramatically. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone there was already doing a lot of web hosting and just threw this in their stack. There are also a number of housing companies that will cut great deals for non profits if they’re at up right.

QuarterSwede,
@QuarterSwede@lemmy.world avatar

Thank you for being transparent. This helps those of us who don’t know how to spool up our own instance figure out how much to donate. Much appreciated.
