Barrayar. Giant SciFi world, tons of cool characters, politics, action, romance and intrigue. All in all it probably would make for a pretty great series.
I suspect the big thing that’s always held Lois McMaster Bujold’s Vorkosigan series back from being made into a movie or television show is Miles being disabled. Peter Dinklage could’ve played him, but he’s too old at this point for young Miles. And there’s probably not a lot of acting talent with dwarfism AND the manic charisma that playing a proper Miles needs.
I wonder if it’d work as an anime though? Lois McMaster Bujold reviews a lot of manga on Goodreads so I imagine she might at least entertain the idea if anyone ever approached her.
I think her Chalion series would work as an excellent series of shows, either live action or animated. Penric is, personality-wise, a lot like Miles, but easier to cast.
Not in this field anymore, but used to be a landscaper for a handful of years.
A lot of people think that landscaping is just grass cutting, but it’s called that because you are literally scaping the land, and sometimes beyond that.
Hell, roof work, foundation laying, pressure washing, among other things, have been a part of my duties during my time in that field.
I just want basic running shoes that are $30/pair and will not change in any way for the next 40 years. Basically, I just want a pair of New Balance shoes on sale from joesnewbalanceoutlet.com for the good old price they used to offer 3 years ago. The only problem with them at the moment is they have raised the price floor to $40 and the style rotates too much. I just want the same stupid thing every time.
Some key features:
a little rubber around the toe to keep the puddles out
breathable top
cushy bottom
dont change
I hear a lot of this BIFL for shoes stuff. I have no intention of keeping my shoes longer than 6-9 months. At $30/pair, they are disposable. When I accidentally step in dog crap, they become disposable immediately.
I also have no interest in leather. Might last a long time, but for me it is like putting a ziplock bag on my feet and it turns into a swamp real fast.
Donations or grants would probably be best. I’m sure there are community grants available for doing public good.
I’ve also seen some open source things sell merch, where you buy a hat or something with a particular logo. It’s still donating with extra steps, but it’s a little different
Our instance admin broke it down recently, and it’s actually not too expensive to run. Without wasting money on engagement, growth, data collection, marketing, etc, it’s not actually that expensive to run social media platforms I guess
Until you get into image/video/file hosting, it’s very cheap. So long as people are ok with off-site storage usage, then it shouldn’t cost much at all.
Merch is a pretty big risk, or at least was when I was doing it for bands. I know there are solutions for on demand creation now that might be more feasible
ber of instances grows 100x, all existing instances face an increase in costs even if they didn’t gain many more users, because they’re receiving more messages from federated instances,
The German feddit.de hosters (the one I’m using and probably the 5th largest instance) declined donation completely when I last checked…
Yeah, and I started saying no more often but the other floor guys just have the mindset “I get paid to be here. Noone is gonna tell them anything. I’ll be the only one who hears it so I will just go do it.” 😞
Part of me wants to make a giant spectacle of the thing. Show up with a ton of gear that you have to set down (directly in their way) while you you deal with the boxes. But I know that type of person would just complain even louder.
It sounds like you’re in a different dept with a different manager. Assuming that your manager agrees, your manager should be the one to say no. That way, everyone on your team can simply say their manager won’t allow it.
If that fails, the Wally Reflector is a good tactic. Tell them that you’d love to help, but they need to do something first. You can say that you’re very busy, but you’ll take the boxes if they flatten all of them and put them on a cart. It’s still offering to help, but it requires work on their part. It also quickly reveals if the requester is just being lazy.
If that fails, treat it as a training opportunity- they must need training on a required part of their job, which is why they called you. Drag them along the whole time, explaining every detail to them. Bonus points if you explain the history of why we do it that way. Basically, make it more work for them to be lazy.
I’m an evangelist’s kid. I grew up surrounded by religion. When I got to my 30s I started reevaluating matters of faith. Now in my 60s I consider that journey complete. On “good” days I’m agnostic, on “bad” days an atheist.
I know many awesome people of faith. I know many hideous people of faith. I know many awesome nonbelievers, I know meant hideous nonbelievers.
Be a decent human being and very few people will care what you believe.
Can I ask, in the friendliest way possible and purely for my curiosity so I really don’t expect an answer, how you balance “higher power” with “doesn’t use it”? The way you’ve described it could be interrupted as anything from an otherwise traditional Christian who doesn’t believe in directly answered prayers, to believing that this is some sort of simulation we will wake up from.
One thing I often think about coming from a Christian upbringing is the idea that God knows everything that will ever happen to you, every choice you’ll make, when you’ll die, etc. To me, that signifies determinism and total lack of free will. That just doesn’t sit well with me.
Agnostic and atheist aren’t mutually exclusive things. 99.9% of atheists are agnostic about there being a god because it’s unprovable. Same way you’re likely agnostic about Russell’s teapot en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russell's_teapot
For me it’s the sense of progression. I cognitively know it’s meaningless progression but emotionally I still feel value out of that artificial progression. Like I’ve achieved something. In addition to that it’s freeing in that it’s the most objectively fair setting(I suppose this is less true in modern games than it used to be sadly) in a game it doesn’t matter who you are or what your reality is, it doesn’t exist there. No problems from your real life have to exist there so that escapism can be a very addictive coping mechanism.
Id need a fan to get rid of moisture when it’s hot and my feet are sweaty.
Quick swap method for the tread of the bottom as it becomes worn or to suit another purpose - need nonslip non conductive bottom at work -swap as needed or maybe need better support for long distance running on pavement for your work out - swap to the tread for that
Shoe laces are gone I want a one hand quick latch or something. I’ve seen them on helmets adapt it to a shoe please.
In my experience, this usually fills in for something that people need to be true.
I’m not religious, but I’ve noticed religion can (successfully) act as a mental buffer to help people through hard times. To keep them from simply clocking themselves out during the lowest of lows.
Whether someone else likes that idea or not because it’s “lies” doesn’t really matter if it’s a technique for pure animal survival that works for some members of a species.
Personally, I’ve seen a lot of damage done to perfectly good people done via religious institutions, so I’d prefer if a formalized network of mental health services that was affordable and accessible existed. But, again, my preferences for the type of system that performs a function aren’t going to erase what happens in real life with real people faced with survival problems on the ground.
That’s a good take. It offers hope in times of desperation. A mental health solution would be better, but I’m told constantly that there’s a waiting list of 2 years, even though my GP is trying his very best to get me into a program, sometimes a higher power is all we have.
That said, f*ck all the religious rules. Live your life and hang on, even if you have to believe in a unicorn.
I actually quit smoking 6 months ago. No only my close friends and fiancee know I’m a furry because when I call myself a “furry” it’s just a persona for like anime conventions and stuff. Not huge into the community.
My thoughts are that your question is not so much about belief as about tribe. Since you seem to care about your group identity, why not support a sports team instead? It creates fewer problems than religion.
Vancouver Cancuks begs to differ. Still less problems than religion though.
Honestly anything in community or with people. Concerts, hobbies, helping, travelling. You don’t need religion to find and connect with tribe and humanity.
I thought that too. But when my atheist friend lost her child, the only thing I could talk about was ‘energy never gets destroyed and shit’, just to keep her away from organised religion. Because her local priest already has made an appointment to speak to her and her partner.
Sometimes it is really about giving them comfort that their loved ones will be alive as long as they remember them. That’s what I told her but I still feel shitty about it, because I hope there’s something more for the innocents, but I don’t think so.
500 years in the past, I’d not survive long enough to be outed. It was not a good time to be a woman.
500 years in the future, hard to predict but I’d take that option if offered. Except with none of whatever currency they use and no ID would likely starve or be arrested for trying to evade identification.
i don’t play games any more (at least, hardly), but these are the things i’ve learned about my preferences in games over the years, especially the ones that i played a LOT.
in rpg/rts games: early-game bugs that unlock any infinite resource. SOLVED skill trees or level systems that i can read then try different configurations. customizable bots are nice, too.
in rts/fps: solid, fully unlocked multiplayer with custom maps. lan gaming with no DRM so i can pitch a disc to my friends and we all install and play is great, but ubiquitous cracks are also fine. scriptable interfaces for combat tricks like the 4-shot glock in CS1.6 add an extra level of panache for me.
fighting games: solid controls, definable keys. also, combos that can be executed without timing: let me just input all the keys in the right order. also, please include a full-unlock cheatcode.
platformers/beatemups: let me run-and-gun. walljumps and double jumps are cool. if you want to throw in a few extra moves or let me build up to an ultimate, that’s cool, but i would like some control over which skills i pick up. having a co-op on these adds a lot of fun.
puzzle games: don’t make them. also, don’t put puzzles in any of the other game types. puzzles suck. fuck puzzles.
also, i don’t really give afuck about the story, even in the rpgs. i just wanna build out a character. if you can build up some interesting lore around MY quest to learn every skill/get all the equipment, that’s fine.
