fastfinge, in Why has YouTube introduced support for multiple audio tracks for videos only now?

A couple reasons, I think:

  1. AI dubbing: this makes it way easier for YouTube to add secondary dubbed tracks to videos in multiple languages. Based on the Google push to add AI into everything, including creating AI related OKR’s, that’s probably a primary driver. Multiple audio tracks is just needed infrastructure to add AI dubbing.
  2. Audio description: Google is fighting enough antitrust related legal battles right now. The fact that YouTube doesn’t support audio description for those of us who are blind has been an issue for a long time, and now that basically every other video streaming service supports it, I suspect they’re starting to feel increased pressure to get on board. Once again, multiple audio tracks is needed infrastructure for offering audio description.
Illecors, in Am i the a**hole for telling my coworkers no?

You need to change jobs. Obviously your coworkers are taking a piss of you and being right doesn’t really matter.

SmokingFurry,

Yeah, but I love my job. Plus with living in such a small town. There’s only a handful of places I could get a job. I’m only in my mid 20s but around here there’s not much. I recently moved here too so I don’t know a whole bunch of people…

Nemo, in What kind of wearable device do you want? Assuming it will work and feel like you imagine it would

Honestly I just want a shirt that won’t get collar rings. I have very oily skin.

OhmsLawn, in Am i the a**hole for telling my coworkers no?

No, you’re right to set boundaries.

People will always want you to do stuff that’s outside of your classification. The key is to be “too busy” when it doesn’t advance your career, and willing to learn when it does. Ideally, you don’t have to directly say no. When you hit the balance right, they stop asking.

SmokingFurry,

I like your advice, and it makes me think I’m on the right track. They used to call a lot more. Even for me specifically, but I got tired of it, and it made them mad, and now they call on occasion for small things like the other day.

Just it’s not my job to do. Even if I’m just walking around looking for things to do either for myself or my crew. I am still working and they just don’t wanna do their jobs. I’m only supposed to do it if they are busy or it’s like a 5 gallon bucket of paint that needs to be brought to the front. The heavy lifting and hard work.

If I didn’t love my job I’d probably find a new one. Just with 75% of the store liking me and 25% not… I think I’m good. 🤔

Hobart_the_GoKart, in If you could custom make your *perfect* shoes, what features would they have?

I would just like some width varieties as well as length.

AlexSup21, (edited ) in What do you do to reduce your use of single use plastics?

By not buying bottled water. Where I live water is clean, so I have a coffee thermos that I refill.

Gigan, in Am i the a**hole for telling my coworkers no?
@Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

Not the asshole, they’re mad because they have to work now.

thisNotMyName,

They have to find someone else to do their job now

@wjrii@kbin.social avatar

You think that's not WORK? 🤣

silver_wings_of_morning, in What's a sci-fi or fantasy book or series that you want to see adapted as a movie/television series?

Something by Alastair Reynolds. I think Eversion would work as a mini series. Otherwise Revelation Space would be sick, but perhaps as an animated show instead of live-action.

klemptor,

Pushing Ice might be cool. His other stuff is so hit or miss for me.

skip0110, in What do you do to reduce your use of single use plastics?
@skip0110@lemm.ee avatar

A great way is by charging for volume of trash produced. My city works that way (pay per bag) and we produce very little trash (sometimes not even filling a trash bag in one week). It also makes you really consider buying something when you include the potential cost of throwing it away, if it is not reusable.

neptune, in Where do you get affordable scented candles?

Make your own

Bearigator,

I was actually looking in to that last night. I’ll probably try it once but I do wonder if the time it would take would be worth the money saved.

neptune,

It depends on a lot of factors. How serious you are into candles, how much money you make/have/want to save, and if there are any scents you want that are hard to find as candles but available as oils

Angry_Maple,
@Angry_Maple@sh.itjust.works avatar

There’s also verifying that you have the right oils. There are some scented oils that aren’t meant to be burnt

leraje, (edited ) in Is Lemmy as a platform sustainable?
@leraje@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Well, Mastodon has been around since 2016 IIRC which is nearly 8 years and it’s still growing and expanding. There’s no reason to suppose Lemmy will be any different.

A large part of the issue of sustainability is intent. Meta, Twitter, Microsoft, Google etc are profit driven. By that standard, no fediverse software is sustainable because for-profits only care about continual growth leading to continual profit.

Lemmy is open source. No one who develops it or hosts an instance really cares about it being financially profitable so there’s not that motivation. The motivation is more akin to doing something positive for people and at the same time, indulge in a hobby/interest they have. If the people who benefit from it (you and me, the users) recognise that benefit I would hope they donate to its development and the instance they’re on. This in turn enables the users who can’t afford to donate to still be able to participate in a system where profit is not King.

So sustainability in the fediverse really means ‘can I afford to keep doing something I enjoy doing?’ As long as they can, it’s sustainable.

Portbane,

Thanks for your comprehensive answer, it explained a lot for me!

Candelestine,

Just to add to this, to my knowledge the Lemmy model does not prevent monetization. So, if you want to try to start an Instance and someday monetize it, you can try if you want.

You’ll be competing with all the other Instances still, but if yours is unique and offers great value, you could potentially turn this into a job.

I would have no issues if Ruud decided to quit his day job and admin LW full time, paying himself a reasonable, middle class salary from the server donations. So long as he remained transparent about it all like he has been so far.

Honestly, I actually hope this happens someday, because it would make a different kind of far more common monetization a tiny bit less likely. That’s just selling the Instance. It’s his, on his hardware, so if someone offered him 5 million for it, he could just sell it. But if he’s drawing a salary from it, and he loves it, he may not be so willing to sell out. He wouldn’t necessarily need the money, because we’d already be paying him directly.

leraje,
@leraje@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I wouldn’t have an issue with this either - within reason. But I suspect making an instance a de facto business from which an admin draws a wage would raise so many issues about a whole raft of things it probably wouldn’t be worth it.

KinNectar,
@KinNectar@kbin.run avatar

I actually hope that some dev work goes into providing "premium features" for paying subscribers. Things like profile cosmetics, awards, "superlikes", gif embeds, maybe sub only communities/threads. I view all of these as perfectly acceptable premium features that folks pay for on platforms like Discord that don't deter free users. If it helps make instances sustainable and keeps high quality admin & moderation in place, I would argue it would be a big community benefit.

Another possibility is instance - as - affiliate where the admin sets up affiliate accounts with services like VPN, Amazon, a web host, etc. To enable users to buy things they would already and give a kickback to the instance.

thegiddystitcher, in Why does lemmy seem better for engagement and conversation then (I meant than) Mastodon
@thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee avatar

It seems to depend a lot on the topic tbh, for example cross stitch is more active on Lemmy whereas knitting is more active on Mastodon. Memes, Lemmy. Gamedev, Mastodon. etc etc. I end up cross-posting a lot from Mastodon to Lemmy just to cover all my bases 😄

Your post kind of dismisses hashtags but given that they’re basically what all of Mastodon runs on, I’d very much recommend using them. Both to build your own follow list and feeds, as well as in your posts to reach other people.

And don’t be afraid to ask for a boost if you have something to say that you think is relevant to a much wider audience.

rob299,

I wouldn’t use mastodon without hashtags, but they have their limitations and potential short comings.

Rhynoplaz, in What makes video games addictive for you?

One thing that I’ve noticed is that back in the day, if you played a game enough, you either beat it, and quit playing it, or you got stuck and quit playing it.

Now, DLC, matchmaking, and monthly events add years of replayability to games. As long as there’s another battlepass to complete and holiday themed costumes to collect, there’s ALWAYS one more thing to do/collect/buy.

Usernameblankface, (edited ) in If you could custom make your *perfect* shoes, what features would they have?
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

Something breathable like canvas but it is more durable than leather. The soles are as tough as possible while staying flexible enough to accommodate squatting. The soles are designed to be replaced multiple times without damaging the rest of the shoes.

It would have a composite protective toe, few to no seams, and laces that can snug it up to your foot if you tug them and hook them, but the shoes would stay on if you don’t do anything to the laces. Like, they just wouldn’t be as supportive without snugging them up.

It would have aggressive arch supports, or else come with several different inserts for different arch support needs.

Also, very wide toe box designed around normal toes, not squashing toes into a narrow or unnaturally shaped space.

Rhoeri, in What kind of wearable device do you want? Assuming it will work and feel like you imagine it would

I already have an Apple Watch. That’s enough for me.
