Geek_King, in What's a sci-fi or fantasy book or series that you want to see adapted as a movie/television series?

The Expeditionary Force series! I loved the series and listened to the whole thing on audible! The great thing is, R.C. Bray could still voice one of the key characters who makes the whole series fun and addicting!

Starb3an,

That’s with Skippy the beer can right?

Geek_King,

You know it! God damn, a TV show based on that series would be so awesome! Come on Amazon, get cracking!

Joe Abercrombie – First Law Trilogy
Stephen R Donaldson – The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant

boogetyboo,
@boogetyboo@aussie.zone avatar

I’ve often mused who they’d cast as Thomas. A younger Billy Bob Thornton would have worked.

DaneGerous,

On Joe Abercrombies website he says there’s a best served cold show in the works.

Rogmonster, in I read that weed makes you not dream, then when you go off weed you have crazy dreams. So heavy, heavy weed users that quit, how long did you have crazy dreams for?

I dont remember my dreams when I use. It’s the main reason I do. I have terrible nightmares and weed helps me not wake up screaming… But when I stop for a time, it all comes back. It’s terrible that I have to choose between being too tired to function and being able to pass a drug test

ShunkW,

You could talk to a doctor about prazosin. It’s a blood pressure drug that stops dreams for some unknown reason. I have PTSD nightmares and will take it for a week or so when they crop up again. Just something to consider

Rogmonster,

I appreciate your suggestion. I have some of the same issues as a few other commenters. I have low blood pressure from an autoimmune issue which contraindicates BP drugs. I’ve tried a lot of things, but I have a sensitive system and the side effects tend to be worse than the dream.

swordsmanluke,

Plus one for prazosin. I have a family member with PTSD nightmares. Prazosin has made them able to actually sleep for the first time in their adult life.

Mistymtn421,

I took a BP medicine called Clonidine for PTSD nightmares as well. I wonder what it is about them that help.

My biggest issue was having already naturally low BP, so couldn’t take it at the dose they wanted. Luckily, it still worked. Just had to go in frequently to have my pressure checked.

intensely_human,

Are you chronically dehydrated?

Mistymtn421,

Not at all. Just runs in the family.

Rogmonster,

Hmm. I have low BP and my physician said they didn’t recommend it. Maybe I’ll see if a low dose would work. I can check my BP at home 🤞

Mistymtn421,

The going in part was for their records. Apparently me checking at home wasn’t official enough for them.

intensely_human,

What are your nightmares about?

Seraph,
@Seraph@kbin.social avatar

That question doesn't strike you as mildly inappropriate?

intensely_human,

Only if the person being asked is compelled to answer.

Jax,

The term is “common decency”.

Rogmonster,

I don’t find it an insensitive question online. Usually I’m committing horrible acts of violence. Stuff I didn’t even know I knew about. And I’m one of the nicest people you’d meet. It really fucks me up.

Newby, in Has Nintendo lost it's magic or is it just now waking up and making good games again - my thoughts included, but what are the views of Lemy users?

Are you saying Odyssey is not a good Mario game?

rob299, (edited )

Mario Odysee, was a good Mario game overall however it seemed like they were going for a more Hollywood vibe then Mario vibe in this game and feel like it strives away from what Mario was and is. It’s one thing if Super smash bros does that, another if Mario drives away from what Mario is in its own game. Also the levels look more like Sonic then Mario.

Gameplay wise and mechanics it’s a great game, almost perfect, but it almost looks like Mario is going the direction of Sonic during the ps2 and Xbox 360 times, not necessarily broken games, but experimenting with new things but in a way that it doesn’t quite feel like how Mario is suppose to feel. Almost like how Sega tried making a shooter with Shadow the hedgehog for one. If they’d fix up the environments and the soundtrack it could easily be the best in the series.

BustinJiber, in Which books have the worst video adaptation?

I hated the two made for TV Terry Pratchett adaptations of Colour of Magic and Going Postal. Like, they pissed me off so hard I couldn’t sleep. Particularly Going Postal (my favorite Pratchett book), they couldn’t have missed the point of it any harder even if they tried.

Taleya,

Hogfather as well it just became nonsensical once they stripped all the evolution of folk imagery out

dukatos, (edited ) in Which books have the worst video adaptation?

American Gods

I am legend

Taleya,

American gods is a breathtaking showpiece of just how fast a show can derail in every possible imaginable way

FlavorPacket, in Which books have the worst video adaptation?

Starship Troopers. The book is great, but the movie is like if someone wrote a short summary of the cliffs notes of the book. I guess they both had bugs.

Taleya,

Given the background of those involved, it’s a downright savage pastiche.

MrEff, (edited )

Funny you say that- that isn’t far from how it was made. Someone wrote a spec script about a human war with space bugs, independent of starship troopers. When one of the production people read the script they brought up the point that there was a book that they remembered that was kind of like it. When they checked, no one had the film rights to it so they bought it for cheap. They then did a quick rewrite to slap in the character names and basic/cheap/easy things from the book to make more of an appeal to the book fans. Then when the director came on board he was a fan if the book but also wanted to do his own thing. So you now had at least 3 different directions the story was going and it was simply held together by the loose premise of starship troopers.

Fillabong, in Which books have the worst video adaptation?
@Fillabong@lemmy.world avatar

Some Dean Koontz and Stephen King adaptations were pretty bad. Hideaway, Phantoms, The Dark Half, Sleepwalkers.

Drusas,

I really enjoy the movie Phantoms, but not because it's as good as the book. It's just a fun movie if you're into that genre. But we could definitely add almost every Stephen King adaptation to this list. Don't get me wrong--some of them I very much enjoy, but that doesn't mean they're not terrible (looking at you, The Stand (first one), Storm of the Century, and Tommyknockers).

Furedadmins,

Phantoms was by Dean Koontz.

Drusas,

I know. The comment I replied to discussed both Dean Koontz and Stephen King.

Zorque,

I mean, Ben Affleck was da bomb in Phantoms, yo.

fjordbasa,
Drusas,

And Liev Schreiber!

morphballganon,

I couldn’t get past the first couple chapters of Hideaway

Taleya,

Langoliers

Kusimulkku,

Sting was great though

I’m a huge David Lynch fan, but yeah, that movie is insane. Has some good moments, but not many!

daina,

This movie slaps if you watch it high. Like really high.

Taleya,

True of a lot of Lynch’s work. He definitely produces material aimed for a mind in an altered state

Xariphon, in Who is the cruelest fictional villain?

You could really take your pick of Vampire the Masquerade baddies.

Ur-Shulgi, for instance, who looks like a charred corpse, has led multiple genocides, is directly referred to as "violence incarnate," and doesn't seem to have a goal beyond exterminating everything he considers unclean. Depending on who you ask, that may very well be damn near everything, period.

Or Sascha Vykos, who... to call them a torturer is like saying Michelangelo kinda knew how to paint. Vykos is a monster in every sense of the word, and cruelty is both method and goal in a lot of their schemes.

Damaskox, (edited ) in Which things have you avoided or embraced on the name alone?

ALostInquirer,

Trying out new things in life is an effective way to learn something new about yourself and the world around you.

Part of why I’m asking tbh! I’m blanking on stuff I’ve avoided based on names, but I’m hoping some replies here might highlight them as, “Avoided but…!”

Drusas, in Excluding the obvious ones such as politics, what topics can't you stand listening to people talk about?

Sports.

greedytacothief,

Yeah if it lasts more than a couple minutes I just walk away, my presence is not wanted in that conversation anyway.

TheAmishMan,
@TheAmishMan@lemmy.world avatar

This, but primarily when someone is confounded by the idea that im not into sports. Ive had this happen with a few things, but sports are one of the weireder ones. I mean to the point of them going, nah you like sports, then continuing ro go on a rant about sone game.like i know im into a lot of stuff others arent, but if they sont want to talk about it, thats perfectly fine

shalafi,

LOL, when I moved to the South (American) people were stunned that I knew nothing about the SEC (regional college football conference) and didn’t have a favorite.

It was a big deal, for both men and women, around the office. Now that I’m at a software dev, people rarely comment, and only on their local team.

Go local sports team!

Usernameblankface,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

Yup, I figured I would not be the first to say this.

I’ve gotten to the point that I don’t mind a hearing a quick overview of whatever the latest game is, but I really really don’t want to hear a half hour analysis of which player on what team is going to lead them to victory and why coach x is far better than coach y.

DeathWearsANecktie, in Excluding the obvious ones such as politics, what topics can't you stand listening to people talk about?

People talking about what alcohol they like. I don’t drink so it’s just boring to me and I can’t relate whatsoever.

shalafi,

That sort of talk disappears when you get older. People might briefly chat about their favorite whiskey or whatever, but they’re not having whole-ass conversations on the topic.

refurbishedrefurbisher, in Who is the cruelest fictional villain?

Kefka from Final Fantasy VI, Majora’s Mask from Majora’s Mask, or AM from I Have no Mouth and I Must Scream are all pretty evil.
