VegaLyrae, in What's a sci-fi or fantasy book or series that you want to see adapted as a movie/television series?

No one has mentioned The Culture?

There really wouldn't be much to update because a good chunk of it is still modern. Not only that, but Banks really fucked with gender, ideology, and civil rights in a way that is still incredibly relevant in 2023.

I also really want someone to try to portray Fwi-Song from Consider Phlebas.

Man, I’ve been stuck in this place where I really want to read those books (somehow I missed them), but I write SFF too and have some near-future thoughts that I don’t want to get tangled up with his stuff. (Part of the reason I went back and read the Chronicles of Amber was to keep my mind away from modern SFF while I work on projects.)

Some day I think I’ll just have to give in and read it and my own stuff is too close to his…oh well. I feel like I’d enjoy his work based on what everyone says about it.

VegaLyrae,

I think that it is an influence worth risking.

The settings themselves vary wildly, and technically the books occur before, during, and after the present. The level of technology varies wildly.

The one thing in common is the examination of the content of the character of the "human" being, and how we are the same or different, adapt or don't, expand or hide.

It's truly masterful work that, yes has cool gizmos and concepts but worries more about how the gizmos make you feel.

dustyData,

Oh don’t worry, The Culture is anything but near-future. Some concepts are so out there that they border surreal existentialist philosophy.

VegaLyrae,

And some are set in the past! A large period of time is covered.

teft,
@teft@startrek.website avatar

I came looking for The Culture. Those are such great stories.

SheDiceToday,

THE CHAIR!

Use of Weapons was definitely one of the best of that style I’ve ever read.

VegaLyrae,

I don't think it would work well as a movie, but I think it would make for a great miniseries with converging chronologies.

zeekaran,

PoG would make a good movie or TV show. Imagine Denis V putting Dune level effort into a movie adaptation of it. UoW would easily translate to TV and unlike most Culture novels, wouldn’t require that much CG budget.

GiddyGap, in Am i the a**hole for telling my coworkers no?

That’s a toxic work environment in the making. Always call out that kind of behavior.

BilboBargains, in Those of you with lesser-known types of jobs...what do you do?

I create control systems, currently in the automotive industry but the same principles apply to any control system, which is the thing I love about this subject. The skillset is about trimming down a problem to it’s absolute bare essentials. I always wondered what makes machines tick and control theory is the systematic expression of that pursuit. We model the system or phenomena in question and then develop the control in simulation. Once we have the desired result, it is usually realised as a software object that is embedded in a computer.

I started on this path as an unemployed and disillusioned 32 year old engineer, retrained over a period of 2 years and it turned out to be a huge source of fulfillment.

HubertManne, in What's a sci-fi or fantasy book or series that you want to see adapted as a movie/television series?
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

well it used to be wheel of time.

IonAddis,
@IonAddis@lemmy.world avatar

My condolences for your loss.

Buddahriffic,

Still is for me. I want to see Jordan’s story and world, not this other one loosely based on his.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

Me2 but I would call it more than loosely. Just enough to sorta spoil a better done production that had more fidelity.

ButtDrugs,

Season 2 was a big step up from S1

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I agree but mistakes from season 1 are still going to be problematic to the story, still wondering if they are just going to ignore that they made the idea of reincarnating as a different sex as something someone would expect to happen over being something no one would expect.

son_named_bort, in Which things have you avoided or embraced on the name alone?

There was a place near where I used to live called The Bargin Store. I tend to avoid places that can’t spell their own name correctly.

starbreaker, in What do we get in return for paying taxes?
@starbreaker@kbin.social avatar

Feeling like you got fucked in the ass without having to question your sexuality?

starbreaker, (edited ) in For software devs, which job to pick
@starbreaker@kbin.social avatar

Take whatever job will pay the most while demanding the least amount of time spent on the job. It doesn't matter of a job pays a quarter million and lets you work on trendy tech if you're on the job 80 hours a week; that's just you getting fucked in the ass. If you're working 40 hours a week or less (ideally much less) you can do passion projects on your own time.

Don't look for friendship, community, or emotional fulfillment on the job. If you find it anyway, it's a trap. Do the job, get paid, and GTFO. Be a mercenary, not a company man.

starbreaker, in Circumcised men, how do you feel about your parents having mutilated your penis without your consent?
@starbreaker@kbin.social avatar

I know why my parents had me cut. It was because my father had been cut, and that's just what was done at the time. It's not a good enough reason for me, and if I had had sons I would not have allowed them to be cut in turn. My children are not my property.

blueamigafan, in Excluding the obvious ones such as politics, what topics can't you stand listening to people talk about?

Ninja air fryers, at my work there are loads of people who own them, and it’s on the verge of becoming a cult.

spittingimage,
@spittingimage@lemmy.world avatar

…Join usssss…

systemguy_64,

Dude! You can make tendies and fries in 15 minutes!!!

Feathercrown,

CLEARLY you don’t own an air fryer

starbreaker, in What's the purpose of strategy statements and other "corporate plans" in office culture
@starbreaker@kbin.social avatar

Nobody in management wants to admit the truth: the corporation exists to further enrich its already wealthy owners. That sort of mission statement, however accurate, isn't going to inspire anybody to buy into the corporate culture, let alone put in unpaid overtime by working more than 40 hours a week on a salary.

IvanOverdrive, in What's a sci-fi or fantasy book or series that you want to see adapted as a movie/television series?

I came here to say Chronicles of Amber. Damn, I thought I was the last fan left.

spittingimage,
@spittingimage@lemmy.world avatar

Not the last. Chronicles of Amber is awesome.

starbreaker, (edited ) in What are your thoughts on the concept of having faith in a Higher Power but choosing to distance oneself from established religious doctrines?
@starbreaker@kbin.social avatar

Because I've been playing the audiobook of Eiji Yoshikawa's Musashi for my wife, here's a line from Musashi's Dokkōdō, the "way of walking alone":

Respect Buddha and the gods without counting on their help.

starbreaker, in Am i the a**hole for telling my coworkers no?
@starbreaker@kbin.social avatar

No, you're not the asshole. But I'm the guy who won't do shit unless it's explicitly part of my job description.

GissaMittJobb, in Why has YouTube introduced support for multiple audio tracks for videos only now?

It was not impossible to implement, no. We can only guess as to why it wasn’t implemented, but if I had to guess, I’d say it’s simply not been prioritized.

crypticthree, in Why has YouTube introduced support for multiple audio tracks for videos only now?

It just wasn’t a priority. It doesn’t impact the bottom line so it didn’t get a significant amount of investment
