BrianTheeBiscuiteer, in What's a sci-fi or fantasy book or series that you want to see adapted as a movie/television series?

Abhorsen / Old Kingdom series.

I don’t like reading but I breezed through the first three books. I think all the dark, necromancy type stuff would be generally well received. The gates of the afterlife also sound really cool to be put in a visual form.

IonAddis,
@IonAddis@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, it’s a really distinct take on necromancers. The visual look of everything, the rules of the world–all really well designed.

It’d be a great YA movie or series.

Tarquinn2049,

Yeah, I was looking for this one. It also always struck me as a good option for VR games once that is a bit more entrenched with the general public.

SheDiceToday,

I think it would be good, but the whole ‘mental’ aspect of the magic would be impossible to convey well.

Extrasvhx9he, in What's your favorite thing to dream about?

I really envy people that can remember their dreams. I just close my eyes to sleep and wake up like time didnt pass

xigoi, (edited )
@xigoi@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I really envy people who don’t remember their dreams. I wish I could teleport through the night instead of waking up scared and anxious.

DashboTreeFrog,

I heard about a strategy for remembering dreams that did work for me, but to be fair, I already occasionally remembered dreams, I just wanted to remember them more frequently and with more detail.

The moment I wake up, I write down absolutely anything I can remember about my dream. I found that as I was writing, some details would come back to me. After a few weeks doing this, I was remembering many details from my dreams nearly every night, and even having what seems like more vivid dreams.

I did stop doing et EVERY day, cause for me, I just wanted to know if it actually works, but writing first thing in the morning every day felt like too much trouble. If I have an especially weird or vivid dream I do still like to write it down quickly just for the novelty of having a record of your own dreams.

Kolanaki, (edited ) in What's a sci-fi or fantasy book or series that you want to see adapted as a movie/television series?
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

The entire Sprawl trilogy. But if only one was to be made, I’d love to see Count Zero on the big screen as that one had the most action and visually appealing scenes to adapt.

But I also agree with Dragonriders of Pern! I loved those books when I was in high school.

SheDiceToday,

I could see the new enjoyers of Pern flat out giving it up when the twist happened. Plus, I wouldn’t trust the show’s makers to not trash the politics of the holds.

spoilerFantasy -> sci-fi is a pretty big change for a tv audience, I think.

thisbenzingring, in Am i the a**hole for telling my coworkers no?

the trick is just learning how to tell people No

its a balancing act that takes some finesse and if you are going to be a manager soon, you might look into how it is done

Im not sure if I could explain it but it usually involves listening to the request, rewording the request and repeating it back. And then explaining the situation as you see it (why you will say no) and then when they have understanding of the situation, you explain why you are saying no.

From my personal experience, this works out pretty well but there is always that one off that blows up in your face. When that happens just face it head on and as time goes on it usually gets better and requires less work when you have to say no

shalafi, in What's a sci-fi or fantasy book or series that you want to see adapted as a movie/television series?

Drangonlance could be as epic as The Lord of the Rings. Yes, really.

vivadanang,

do game of thrones-fidelity live action for the main line, and some bitchrod love-death-and-robots-type cg for Legend of Huma and I’m in.

Beelzebob,

And a Lord Soth spinoff movie.

Shocker_Khan, (edited ) in Those of you with lesser-known types of jobs...what do you do?

From 2005 to 2008 in South Florida I created and ran a permit expediting company. It came from my mom managing a construction company, them having too many contracts, and not enough contractors to run their own permits. I saw a need and got together with a couple of friends to incorporate.

We pitched it to the owner of the company my mom managed and got a contract from them. We eventually picked up other companies as well.

So the job went like this: one of us be assigned to a specific geographic area or company for the day, we would stop by the office, pick up the paperwork for whatever permits had to be filed, retrieved, delivered.

We would visit the city building department and depending on the city (each ran things in drastically different ways with no consistency) we would be there for 15 minutes or all day. Some permits would be a quick, single day turnaround or could be in bureaucratic hell for a month or two. We’d charge based on the complexity and time involved in getting permits approved. Then we would either deliver the permits to the contractor or the job site. On occasion we would deliver liens to customers who didn’t pay their bills which could sometimes get dangerous.

The only people I’ve ever met that did this exact type of work were people I met within city building departments. It’s a relatively boring, but uncommon profession.

The job came with all kinds of weird knowledge that I’ve never had to use again, like how many palm trees on the property equal a shade tree for the purpose of landscaping requirements. Than answer back then was 3.

The company was born out of a construction boom after Hurricane Katrina and died during the housing market crash of 2008.

Edited for spelling and sentence structure.

Also edit: sometimes getting permits approved would involve meeting with city engineers, making corrections on engineering documents, and just having a good rapport with the city.

Also, currently I am a change control analyst for a telecom company. My job description literally says “protect the network”. Essentially network engineers submit projects to me, I check the projects for accuracy, impact risk, importance, etc. A lot of the time, I reject work because of errors, cutting corners, not enough preparation, etc.

My job is to balance the projects being done VS how many customers I want to piss off because their services get taken down. My engineers either absolutely love me, or would like to have the opportunity to stab me in a dark alley, there really is no in between. Generally the ones I reject often for crap work are the ones that also want to stab me.

YaksDC, in Which books have the worst video adaptation?

Dark Tower - But I don’t think it can be done. I think the reason a lot of Stephen King’s adaptations fail as movies is because his books spend a lot time describing his character’s inner monologue.

Ender’s Game - I was so excited for this movie. But if you are a fan of the books then you saw a lot of discrepancies between the movie and the book. So it ended up being a decent general sci-fi movie.

SheDiceToday,

That’s the reason most books can’t be adapted exactly as written. Unless the writing is so horribly stilted (X went to Y, X said Z to α, X had β happen to him because of α…) that you wouldn’t want to read it in the first place, you’ll need a large amount of narration and/or characters speaking their thoughts out loud, which doesn’t work most of the time and gets worse if they’re doing it solely for the purpose of the viewer getting into their headspace.

Ludrol, in What are your thoughts on the concept of having faith in a Higher Power but choosing to distance oneself from established religious doctrines?
@Ludrol@szmer.info avatar

Christian church is made of people. And people are sinful and evil.

Religion doesn’t come from what other people tell you is truth, but from your experience. What experience have you lead you to believe in higher power?

I have experienced Luck so good and so significant in my life that I can only exlain it by intervention of higher power. But maybe you didn’t experienced something like that, and I can understand that.

Religion comes from within, and not from external sources.

jaamesbaxterr, (edited )

I mostly agree but I would argue that spirituality comes from within, while religion comes from external sources. Religion is just other people’s packaged version of spirituality/faith.

SHITPOSTING_ACCOUNT, in 1st time house buyer, potentially serious structural issues found... anyone have advice re negotiating price reduction / if I should pull out?

owner wouldn’t even put the electric on for viewing because she didn’t want to pay £1 a day standing charge

I bet the real reason is that turning on the power would reveal more trouble.

ericbomb,

Like power not being able to turn on.

Or circuits trip like crazy.

Transcendant,

I’m often told I can be negative with regards to the intentions of others but this definitely crossed my mind. I’ve reiterated many times the importance of the electrics being sorted because I write music, I’ll have ~£15k of equipment in one room and do not want my new home burning down or my kit damaged due to faulty wiring.

Interestingly / worryingly, the electrical cert they handed over at the start of this process hadn’t even been signed (though the company appears to exist).

Buddahriffic,

Not sure how the laws work in the UK for informing people about potential problems, but you might be doing someone else a solid if you forward the inspection report to the current owner and their agent with clear documentation proving you did even if you just plan on walking away at this point (which I would also suggest because even all the things the inspection found might only be scratching the surface).

Where I am, if you aren’t aware of a problem (and aren’t completely negligent to be unaware), you aren’t guilty of fraud for not declaring it. But if you do know about it and neglect to inform a buyer…

Transcendant,

This is a really good idea. My dad and I were saying yesterday it’s such a waste of resources for each buyer to have to get a survey done, especially where the property has hidden issues. Would be great to have some sort of national register, where the first person to pay for a survey can then give access to subsequent buyers for a nominal fee.

I’m definitely going to give the estate agent a politely-worded email stating clearly that the seller is being at best neglectful and at worst, deceptive. I’m sure they won’t be happy either about having their time wasted. I’ll also pass a copy of the survey on.

Buddahriffic,

The whole field is riddled with conflicts of interest. Everyone other than the buyer (and maybe their lawyer?) has an interest in a sale going through for as much money as possible, including the buyer’s agent. They should be flat fee rather than % of total price commission, or even better paid over time based on how satisfied the buyer is (though admittedly this might put too much power in the buyer’s hands because it’s also abusable).

Insurance might be able to help here, actually. Have a policy that covers everything that isn’t made clear before purchase. Then the insurance company sends an inspector and draws up a policy where they list everything they find as not covered, but any other surprise repairs or issues they will cover. Then it’s not up to the seller to declare or hide anything, they can just try to get the best price without any conflict of interest and one of the parties has a vested interest in informing the buyer about everything possible.

Transcendant,

I’ve done a bit of digging around into UK case law. Not sure whether it’s worth the hassle, but there’s a legal term ‘negligent misstatement’ which may be applicable. The tricky part is proving intent, if I can demonstrate that the seller has deliberately concealed pertinent information and massively overvalued the property… they might be liable for my costs.

Lots of ‘might’ in there though, and proving intent can be difficult. I’ve instructed solicitor to cease work on the exchange of contracts; wondering if I should say anything to the seller / estate agent. They wasted my time and probably £1000+ of my money, and I definitely feel a petty impulse to waste theirs in turn.

Buddahriffic,

Yeah, you probably won’t be able to get your money back but you can screw them out of being able to avoid declaring those issues your inspection found. Just pass the inspection on in a way that can be proven, then follow up by sending the same inspection to that address if a sale does happen along with information that you sent it to the sellers and your contact info.

Transcendant,

Yep I was in touch with solicitor today, and they confirmed it’s not worth the hassle pursuing. Though, they did seem to be misinformed re the need for a contract; a contract is required to ‘negligent misrepresentation’ but not for ‘negligent misstatement’.

Excellent idea about passing on the details of the survey to the estate agent, that way they at least have an established obligation for future potential buyers. And I’ll definitely keep an eye on it with a mind to informing the eventual poor sod who takes it on.

PlutoniumAcid, in Have you ever come across some sort of container or organizer for anything that ended up being strangely useful?
@PlutoniumAcid@lemmy.world avatar

Gridfinity.

I’m new to 3D printing but Gridfinity is a game changer. Make your own storage, but this is made to fit into a standard grid, incredibly flexible and useful.

murvillian,

I agree to a certain extent, the idea behind it is pretty awesome. I printed a bunch of grids and organizing pieces a few weeks after the original video dropped, and was pretty impressed by how well most of it worked. The rub comes in with the model sites being fraught with “bad” models that people have tweaked to suit their printers or the hardware they want to use so not everything can be used right away. That kinda thing is hard to measure on screen, in a mesh, so makes a lot of wasted plastic/time.

Sheldybear, in Those of you with lesser-known types of jobs...what do you do?

I work in a museum adapting internationally touring exhibitions to align with their host communities. It’s a great career - there’s travel, I get to see behind the scenes of museum collections, and I get to study other cultures as a job. I do get paid to match the fact that I work for a charity.

My background is in the museum sector, which you can get into either through a PhD in study of a relevant field to the specific museum, or through a graduate program in museum/ conservation studies (which is what I did).

So far as I can tell, there are only a handful of people that do this job globally, which I suppose makes it lesser known!
