chemical_cutthroat, in What's the significance of calling it "Israel-Hamas War" vs "Israel-Gaza War"?

The first is ideologies, the second is location.

Kilnier, in whats a song you heard for the first time recently that gave you a powerful reaction?

Harmony Parking Lot Song - Johnny Hobo and the Freight Trains

“Here’s to our lives being meaningless And how beautiful it is Because freedom doesn’t have a purpose”

Really that whole album. Taught me a lot about how to be ok with being broken.

A phone I can use almost anywhere.

Access to most of mankind's knowledge at my fingertips.

Weather and radar in seconds.

intensely_human, in What makes a smartphone useful to you?

My smartphone is mega useful to me:

  • Step tracking. I can see trends in how much physical activity I’m getting
  • Alarm clock
  • Reminders and lists. I use features like “Remind me at 7 pm that I need to do X” many times per day
  • Google maps and especially transit directions are incredible. Being able to download offline maps is great too for when I’m traveling
  • Ultra high resolution camera in my pocket
  • Google’s been great for the last 20 years. Now GPT-4 is my go-to when I have a quejaron about anything
  • Being able to call people is handy

If nothing else, it’s a portable connection to your desktop. I have telegram on my mobile devices, and I dictate my thoughts into the app and then curate them on my desktop

    Portable web browser to read books on. That’s all I use mine for, except for the occasional text message / phone call. I got by fine for a long while with just my laptop, but reading on my phone is just a lot more convenient in a lot of cases. Like when you’re walking, or running, or standing, or laying down. It’s a pain in the ass to read from a laptop while walking, I’ve almost dropped the poor thing too many times to count.

    Nemo, in What makes a smartphone useful to you?

    It’s a portable game system that also acts as a web browser, ebook reader, MP3 player, digital camera, and instant messenging platform.

    On the downside, they also receive voice calls.

    TornadoRex, in What's the deal with the suspicious usernames on youtube?

    Bots? What are they doing?

    dustyData,

    No, actually real users. YouTube used to use user names. When they tried to force Google+ integration they gave the option to use your real name or split your account and have two “profiles”. One with your username and one with your G+ name. When G+ was unceremoniously brought to the backyard and old yellered, the G+ profile was changed to your old YouTube username plus a bunch of random numbers. Some time later they fused all profiles, leaving a bunch of people with just a word and random numbers. It can be changed now, I think, but most people don’t bother.

    TornadoRex,

    Oh yeah I remember that now.

    Duamerthrax,

    If they’re bots, they’re some of the laziest usernames. Even worst then the [firstname][lastname][number] that infected reddit.

    Annoyed_Crabby, in What do you feel when leaders of Hamas ask you to continue protests?

    Nothing. What, you think people protest for Hamas?

    qnick,
    @qnick@lemmy.world avatar

    Hamas definitely thinks so.

    Annoyed_Crabby,

    And you want people to simply stop protest against genocide because “Hamas think so”?

    qnick,
    @qnick@lemmy.world avatar

    Well, if the terrorist leaders ask you to do something for them, and you do exactly what they ask, but “for different reasons”, I definitely have some questions.

    Annoyed_Crabby,

    That’s akin to saying “condemning Hamas is supporting Israel genocide and oppression of Palestinian”. Simply illogical.

    qnick,
    @qnick@lemmy.world avatar

    I already explained in a different thread, that genocide is purposeful elimination of some nation or ethnicity. For something to be genocide you need an ethnicity and a goal to eliminate it.

    Palestinian is not an ethnicity, it’s just a place where you live, like Californian. And Israel doesn’t have a goal to eliminate them. The target is Hamas, a terrorist organization.

    On the contrary, the target of Hamas is elimination of all Jews, which is an ethnicity. They don’t even hide their goal, you can read their charter.

    Annoyed_Crabby,

    I already explained in a different thread, that genocide is purposeful elimination of some nation or ethnicity. For something to be genocide you need an ethnicity and a goal to eliminate it.

    Genocide:

    Definition

    Article II

    In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

    • Killing members of the group;
    • Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
    • Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
    • Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
    • Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

    Ethnic Cleansing:

    Definition

    As ethnic cleansing has not been recognized as an independent crime under international law, there is no precise definition of this concept or the exact acts to be qualified as ethnic cleansing.

    A United Nations Commission of Experts mandated to look into violations of international humanitarian law committed in the territory of the former Yugoslavia defined ethnic cleansing in its interim report S/25274 as “… rendering an area ethnically homogeneous by using force or intimidation to remove persons of given groups from the area.”

    In its final report S/1994/674, the same Commission described ethnic cleansing as “… a purposeful policy designed by one ethnic or religious group to remove by violent and terror-inspiring means the civilian population of another ethnic or religious group from certain geographic areas.”

    And Israel doesn’t have a goal to eliminate them. The target is Hamas, a terrorist organization.

    And Nestle is a good company that bring you good product that changed the world.

    On the contrary, the target of Hamas is elimination of all Jews, which is an ethnicity.

    b-b-but hamas!

    qnick,
    @qnick@lemmy.world avatar

    You just repeated what I just said, adding “religious” in bold.

    There are plenty of Muslims in the Israeli army, and some of them are currently fighting in Gaza for Israel. There’s nothing religious about this conflict.

    Annoyed_Crabby,

    Well then i’m pretty sure you know what “nation” mean.

    qnick,
    @qnick@lemmy.world avatar

    The term “nation” along with “nationalism” was invented in England in the 1600s. Before that, people didn’t know they belonged to any nation, they identified themselves with religious groups.

    And again, Palestinian is not a nation, it’s just where you live. If you moved to Gaza, you’d become Palestinian.

    Annoyed_Crabby,

    That’s a long way to say you don’t know what nation mean lol.

    I have been slowly dipping my toes in Brother Ali the past few months, and recently listened to this for the first time. His voice is awesome but some of the words may be a little hard to catch. It's worth looking up the lyrics.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OO18F4aKGzQ

    His voice is like caramel in my ears (in the most complimentary way), but it's his lyrics that get me in this and a few others.

    TheFarm,

    I first discovered Brother Ali coming down off a bunch of LSD, and that was some ear candy at the time. He’ll always have a special place in my musical heart.

  • Duamerthrax,

    Ok. It seemed to appear more in certain types pf content over others, but can be explained by certain hobbies having users that care more about fixing their online identity. I’ve noticed it for a while, but seeing almost nothing but these user- type names in a single comment chain finally made me ask.

    dustyData,

    It is the aftermath of forced Google+ integration. Not everyone care that much to correct it.

    jjjalljs, in whats a song you heard for the first time recently that gave you a powerful reaction?

    Recently? This song is just the kind of menacing I like: wolvennest.bandcamp.com/track/accabadora

    I was making a playlist for my friend’s Halloween party and found this album. Though a different friend was like “this song makes me feel… something I don’t know if I like it”

    ryan, in What makes a smartphone useful to you?

    It's nice to be able to stay connected while out and about. Having features like maps helps when lost somewhere. You can keep store cards and such in your phone to scan instead of having to physically carry everything. I went to a conference for work a week ago that required use of an app in order to register for labs.
