rockandsock, in What obscure thing you enjoy do you never get to talk about?

Obscure 80s and 90s hip hop records that very few people have heard of because they sold less than a couple hundred thousand records, some much less

Classic black and white films and TV shows. No one I know in real life enjoys these.

Valmond,

You should digitalise those and share them (I mean it would be very cool if you did!), I’m sure lots of people would like it, they just haven’t got the time/energy/possibility to find those kind of things.

I’d be interested for example :-)

rockandsock,

Most of the music is on Soulseek.

MC Rell is rapper from the late 80s that dropped a pretty good album, very few people have heard of him.

The Lootpack is a 90s hip hop group from LA that was good but for some reason it never caught on, I don’t know anyone else who’s heard their album.

The older films I like aren’t really that obscure, I just don’t know any film nerds in real life. I’m a big fan of the Preston Sturges comedy films, film nerds know them but no one I know in real life watches old movies.

Have Gun, Will Travel is one of my favorite western TV shows. It’s kind of stuck around but, not like I Love Lucy or The Honeymooners did.

There was a series of b movies about a detective called The Falcon. They were kind of a mix of The Thin Man films and the Sam Spade films.

They were lots of fun to watch but I don’t know anyone else who’s seen them.

Valmond,

Took some time but I’m enjoying lootpack right now, very nice!

Very_Bad_Janet,

Can you give us some examples of both? Some that you think we will find obscure and some that you yourself find obscure?

rockandsock,

This is copied from my reply to another person here.

Very_Bad_Janet,

Ah, I love Preston Sturges. I guess I'm lucky to know a few film and TV nerds in real life. ETA: The Lady Eve is one of my favorite movies. (When I'm asked what my favorite movies are, I say that and I Know Where I'm Going by Powell and Pressburger.)

rockandsock,

I’ve seen The Lady Eve a few times over the years but not in a while. TCM used to do Preston Sturges marathons every year or so.

I have never seen I Know Where I’m going but the entry on Wikipedia makes it seem interesting.

Very_Bad_Janet,

Please check it out. I've seen it many times over the years, eventually owning a couple of copies. It's magical. P&P made some really great films - Black Narcissus and The Red Shoes really stand out.

Pons_Aelius, in What would you rather eat a poop flavored chocolate, or chocolate flavored poop?

If I had a choice, neither.

MedicPigBabySaver, in What would you rather eat a poop flavored chocolate, or chocolate flavored poop?

Chocolate. Can hold my nose. Huge portion of taste comes from scent.

Kolanaki, in What is your favourite floor cleaner liquid and why?
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

I have carpet so the only cleaner I keep for regular everyday stuff with that is Resolve. If it’s bad enough, I rent a Rug Doctor.

For the bathroom and kitchen, I just use a wet cloth with hot water and soap to do it by hand because they’re fuckin’ tiny. Owning a mop doesn’t seem justified.

LifeOfChance, in What cheap tool/gadget do you use that greatly improves your daily life?

milwaukee fastback with screw driver attachment. I’m no contractor and use this thing all day everyday. Primarily as a knife but the screwdriver has came in clutch countless times. You can get a two pack for under $20

PoorYorick,

Was coming here to post this. I cannot overstate how much I use this thing daily. Bought it to help with some diy projects, and ended up carrying it everywhere I go. This is one of those few items less than $20 that I honestly can’t see being without anymore.

rustyriffs,

the tanto fastback with screwdriver is a pretty good looking design. I’m adding that one to my wishlist. Lol

DeadpanSlim,

Ok. I bought one of these three weeks ago based on this post.

Holy shit.

I’ve been a Leatherman or knife carrier most of my life. But I have reached for my new Fastback more than most multitools I’ve ever owned.

In these past weeks I have:

  • Taken a fence apart to back a truck into the yard of a friend who was moving.
  • Opened several boxes that I wouldn’t have needlessly dulled my knife blade on.
  • Removed the blade to scrape residue off of a window more than once.
  • Used the flathead to pry whatever small retaining clip needed persuasion.
  • Cut the end of of zip ties totally flush.

I know not everyone will have this experience. But the disposable blade coupled with a 1/4" bit was an absolute game changer for me.

Thanks, OP

livus, in Why do most people not post?
@livus@kbin.social avatar

There's the 90/9/1 rule - out of every 100 people 1 provides content, 9 interact and the other 90 lurk.

I created and post in a community, worldwithoutus but even after it got above 100 it's usually just me posting.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Duh. I just realised I need to get to 200 before the second poster emerges.

SamXavia,
@SamXavia@kbin.run avatar

@livus Lol yeah, it seems more people sit and maybe comment but there's just so much room for people to talk about the topic and even do there own posts but I guess most people just want to look at it and not interact.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@SamXavia I think this is something about the fediverse though - in the old, centralised media we were often relatively passively consuming content spoonfed to us by alorithms. Here in the fediverse, it pays to be more active in building and finding content.

It's a bit of an adjustment in mindset and we're all in various stages of that.

YungOnions, in What chromium based browser do you recommend and why?

I switched to Thorium browser, seems pretty good. There’s also Tempest Browser which is still in Beta, but is a bit like Brave but without the Crypto and some other features. I recommend Thorium, tbh. Seems to work well and has a lot of performance patches added, as well as security. More here: youtu.be/naDYUVFs1-8?si=eC1CtA4q-oF1L8ix

backhdlp, in Lemmy, recommend me a good budget Android phone please
@backhdlp@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I currently use a ZTE Blade V Smart/ZTE 2050, which cost me 150€, pretty cheap, but still very usable (bought it a few years ago so that exact model isn’t worth it anymore, I had generally not absolutely terrible experience with ZTE phones before, tho). I also have a newer phone that I don’t use for no reason, a Xiaomi Redmi Note 11, which cost me 200€.

TrenchcoatFullofBats, in What is the name for the feeling of nostalgia, loneliness, eeriness and liminality that comes when listening to songs like subwoofer lullaby?

I’m not sure if there’s a name for the feeling, but often, the reason we feel that way about certain pieces of music is because they feature minor keys instead of major keys.

Major keys = happy Minor keys = sad

That said, I don’t think either of your examples are in minor keys.

In other Minecraft music news, this is pretty great.

Eufalconimorph, in What is your favourite floor cleaner liquid and why?

Murphy’s Oil Soap for wood floors.

8bitguy,

Because it works well and smells absolutely amazing.

Toes, in Lemmy, recommend me a good budget Android phone please

Motorola has a bunch on Amazon currently. Pick out the one that is most affordable.

SurpriZe,

Which model would you recommend?

And we don’t have Amazon here.

dan1101,

Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G 2023

Toes,

The last one I bought was a few years back. But it has a big battery. Moto G8 Power Lite if you can find it don’t pay too much it’s a older model.

LucasWaffyWaf,

I’m rocking the Moto 5G Ace One and it’s been doing me just fine for the last two years.

eating3645,

It’s been a few years since I’ve had one, but budget Motorola phones have treated me well in the past.

impiri, in What chromium based browser do you recommend and why?

Arc (Mac-only for now) is pretty great and has been my daily driver for a while now. Lots of great quality-of-life improvements, a great approach to tab management, and new optional AI features that are useful instead of annoying.

theherk,

Not open source and last I checked you had to sign in to use it. Can’t imagine why people would use it.

impiri,

I carefully hid some of the reasons I use it in the parent comment

theherk,

Okay, that’s a hilarious response, but what I meant should have been obvious even if my phrasing was poor. I have trouble understanding why one would believe these features outweigh software freedom.

impiri,

Just giving you a hard time. I prefer FOSS generally, but most of my time on a desktop is spent on the web, and Arc’s tab/space management is far ahead of anything else right now. It genuinely makes my life easier. The UX is thoughtfully designed and cohesive; even if I could get close to this setup with Firefox extensions (and I tried), it would be janky (and it was).

I’m very much hoping some of Arc’s UX and workflow ideas will be picked up by browsers generally.

theherk,

Thank you for the follow up. Maybe I’ll give it another spin. I’ve been tinkering with floorp but it isn’t polished.

VanitasTheUnversed, in What is the name for the feeling of nostalgia, loneliness, eeriness and liminality that comes when listening to songs like subwoofer lullaby?

Frission, maybe?

9point6,

Just because you’re making the same mistake I did for a number of years, frisson doesn’t have a 2nd “i”

Octopus1348, in What chromium based browser do you recommend and why?

Just native Chromium, or if you don’t want any Google stuff, Ungoogled Chromium. They both use the same UI as Google Chrome. I recommend these because they have no such bloat, and if you want a chromium-based browser for rare usage, it does it’s thing.

On an unrelated note, I use GNOME Web on Linux and Safari on macOS (they are both based on WebKit). GNOME Web has some problems, but I can’t give up the animation of two finger scrolling between pages and smooth scrolling on touchpad. I use Firefox as a fallback browser on Linux, because I have never really needed something that is specifically Chromium.

I don't think the English language has a single word for it because it encompasses bits of different emotions. The closest single one I could think of might be "bittersweet".
