A_Very_Big_Fan, in Gamers who have gamed for a long time

The only thing that makes it hard for me is shitty monetization, and the knowledge that all online games are subject to getting OW2’d

blargerer, in What are some good (and free) webcomics?

Can I sell you on web novels instead? Worm and The Wandering Inn are a decent starting point.

SheDiceToday,

Worm is great! Somehow, I started with the first few chapters of someone else’s fan-fic set in the worm-verse, and later found Worm. I was so incredibly confused for a while on what was real (by the original author) and what was the fiction.

NemoWuMing, in Finding a good old-style offline German course

I recommend looking for the Michel Thomas Method, as well as Linguaphone AllTalk Method.

JSocial, in Finding a good old-style offline German course

Ah, it sounds to me like you’re wanting something kind of like the old Pimsleur German CDs. Looks like the current iteration is a subscription model with option to buy. I only remember the mp3s I downloaded years ago.

Second the pimsleur approach

Hobart_the_GoKart, in Finding a good old-style offline German course

I supplement my Duolingo German with books and CDs from the Library.

OGLAF

Isn’t that one super NSFW?

Baahb,

Yes

RootBeerGuy,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Only 90% of it.

HobbitFoot,

It is line wearing a codpiece, but wrong.

iMastari,

www.oglaf.com/cumsprite/

NSFW

That is page one.

SatyrSack,

I have never understood how people find these funny.

FMT99,

There aren’t many… any webcomics that make me come back and read the archives from time to time. Oglaf is the exception.

Sithrak! An insane god for an unjust world!

AtmaJnana,

It reminds me of PLIF and SexyLosers. I may still have an archive of PLIF somewhere.

Every few years, I come back and binge re-read all of Oglaf to caught back up.

Etterra, in Why wasn't NYC's Central Park concept copied by other cities?

I live in Chicago and we do have a big centrally located park, along with other smaller parks scattered around. It’s down by the lake, and they keep that big stupid bean there.

Pro tip for tourists, if you absolutely have to go see the bean don’t touch it; everybody touches the damn thing and you will get sick. Go look at the Picasso instead. It’s on all of the tourist attraction maps and way more interesting than a big shiny bean.

systemglitch,

Why would I ever choose to go to Chicago? From an outside perspective it sounds like a total shit hole.

Drop_All_Users,

Nah, Chicagos a great town with excellent food, culture, museums and events. Lots of festivals in the summer, it runs along a beatuiful lake with nice beaches, it has great people, all in all I love Chicago. Full disclosure, there are neighborhoods with high crime, it is unfortunately super segregated, and cold as hell in the winter.

Lemminary,

I’m personally fond of the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. They had the Bodies exhibit the time I visited and it was incredible.

wasted_in_time,

Was just out there a month ago. Place was clean, good weather too. A lot of things to do. Nothing what they’ve shown in the news. I stayed near the loop, didn’t travel south, as I had no reason to.

Leaving Chicago, the taxi driver said he wanted people to continue thinking Chicago was a shit town, because it keeps rent down. Funny.

systemglitch,

That’s fair.

MajorHavoc,

Just so you know, you’re probably not being downvoted by any Chicagoans.

Even the most devout Chicagoan evangelist will just typically grunt and nod in response to someone calling Chicago a shithole.

We understand that Chicago is not everyone’s cup of tea.

al177, in Tech workers - what did your IT Security team do that made your life hell and had no practical benefit?

Oh man. Huge company I used to work for had:

  • two separate Okta instances. It was a coin toss as to which one you’d need for any given service
  • oh, and a third internally developed federated login service for other stuff
  • 90 day expiry for all of the above passwords
  • two different corporate IM systems, again coin toss depending on what team you’re working with
  • nannyware everywhere. Open Performance Monitor and watch network activity spike anytime you move your mouse or hit a key
  • an internally developed secure document system used by an international division that we were instructed to never ever use. We were told by IT that it “does something to the PC at a hardware level if you install the reader and open a document” which would cause a PC to be banned from the network until we get it replaced. Sounds hyperbolic, but plausible given the rest of the mess.
  • required a mobile authenticator app for some of the above services, yet the company expected that us grunts use our personal devices for this purpose.
  • all of the above and more, yet we were encouraged to use any cloud hosted password manager of our choosing.
Hogger85b,

I'll.go one further with authenticator. Mobile phones were banned in the data center and other certain locations (financial services). Had to set up landline phone....but to do that needed to request it...approve it on my phone then enter data center security door run and answer the phone line with 60s like something in the matrix.

AnnaPlusPlus, in What are some good (and free) webcomics?

Irregular Webcomic: it’s mostly reruns these days with new strips twice a week. Still, there is a lot of material to get caught up on.

I enjoy Adventures of God if you want another webtoons comic

Rhynoplaz, in Gamers who have gamed for a long time

Same here. Time is just more valuable now. Hopping into a few quick rounds just feels easier than starting something up and getting halfway through the beginning tutorial, before being interrupted by the kids or wife, and then feeling like you just wasted the hour or so you had to spare, because you didn’t even start playing the actual game yet.

triclops6,

Why I play brawlhalla, and only brawlhalla. For as long or as little as I can

baldingpudenda,

Yup, the only game I play right now is factorio and that was a mistake. Staying up after the kids fell asleep and magically it’s 4 hrs later. PC broke and I’m finally getting proper sleep. Should have stuck with slay the spire and other 1 hr run type games

Rentlar,

Dang, I was defeated… but now I get to sleep?

Slay the Spire Victory? Screen, The Silent laying on the floor

BloodSlut,

dunno, better start another run to have something to do while you figure that out

TheGreenGolem,

Exactly. I know I only have like an hour tops before need to do something and it’s just not enough time to truly immerse myself so I end up not even want to start the game.
Now I’m wondering when I’ll be 50 and the kids will be gone and have time again to play 8-10 hours straight. Maybe then.

alertsleeper, in Gamers who have gamed for a long time

I find that this only happens to me in relation to AAA titles. I just don’t have time to put 60 hrs into a game.

But since I started playing indies I feel like rejuvenated

ExtraMedicated, in What are some good (and free) webcomics?
iliketurtles, in Gamers who have gamed for a long time

I probably game just as much as I used to, but it’s only one game at a time now that I’ll play for years. Used to chase all the releases and hype. Now I just want to space out and have fun.

GladiusB, in Gamers who have gamed for a long time
@GladiusB@lemmy.world avatar

I have some titles I play a lot and some what often. Other are just for fun to break it up. I don’t know if I am going to play it forever or just for a couple of days.
