Authy Desktop client will be discontinued from August 2024

Twillio just announced they’re discontinuing the Desktop version of their popular Two Factor Authentication client. Their proposed solution is for users to move to the mobile app, which of course doesn’t fulfill the use case of people who explicitly chose Authy because it had a desktop client....

I use the flatpak Authenticator on my box. I was able to import my andOTP profile relatively easily through the json file.

Rentlar,

It’s called petrol and benzin elsewhere in the world. Gas/gasoline is just a name for automobile fuel.

Btw, on the periodic table at room temperature and typical atmospheric conditions, gases are “fumes”, sure, but all of the first 72 elements are gaseous at 5000°C.

Rentlar,

Nice job on the half chrome logo on the second panel

Rentlar,

Actually, you need the cock software update.

Rentlar,

The dunkey bit writes itself…

Rentlar,

The only place you can watch all of the above without restriction…

Rentlar,

Yep it’s hilarious that because all the streaming services trying to wall off their own content and region-lock it means that the illegal way is the only reasonable means to access the shows even if you would be willing to spend some money to see it.

Each one comes with predatory practices trying to lock you into long term costs, some have “ad-supported” plans, most have stupid space-wasting apps, and every single one has some onerous EULA they make you agree to.

Rentlar,

Yeah, it is quite disappointing. Like why doesn’t the “Pokemon streaming service” have all the seasons and movies? What’s the point of it then?

Rentlar,

think: “no joke”, “s’truth”, “for real”, “no lie”

Rentlar,

Fuck I’ve got to finish this game before I read this post… I am 10 hours in and it feels like I’ve hardly started.

Rentlar,

There are certain niches where automated mirroring is a little useful.

Game day threads, part sales (where people need to be quick) are a couple examples.

I have most post bots blocked though (lemmit, alien, lululemon, etc.).

Like others said the downsides are that they drown out original posts and discussions with authors that never respond to comments. Consequently, the not-logged-in experience on instances that “leave it up to users to block” will appear messy and full of garbage.

I think they have their place but those automated should be contained to communities that want them, easily identified, easy to block and post rate limited to reasonable levels.

A yet to be developed feature in Lemmy would be the ability to somehow “opt-in follow” automated bot posts rather than the current “opt-out” model.

Can you check the battery voltage with a multimeter if you know how to use one? when disconnected at full charge, when connected, and when the strange flickering is happening?

There are battery voltage monitoring tools on Windows and Linux which could work but I’d trust multimeter numbers more. Check to see if it’s above by more than 15% rated voltage or below rated voltage by any amount at full charge. Check for any strangeness in the charge curve.

If you see any of those signs your battery is likely busted. Also if your battery looks inflated at all replace it immediately.

Rentlar,

You can try the battery monitoring software then. It would likely be a struggle to try to view the status while the screen flickers but if you can get a log then you can review it when you re-enable the fix.

Rentlar,

OK keep monitoring i guess, if its good for now, fingers crossed?

It could be an Amazon quality battery or a combination of many factors… the design voltage of your battery is on the low side which pushes a lot of current to your display and other components. If that display cable is worn or frayed it can have a chance of busting the screen, or in very rare cases spark/catch fire. Inspect it carefully.

Rentlar,

I have AdNauseum on with the “Hide Ads” button unchecked and “leave non-tracking ads alone” option enabled. Privacy Badger is on too to detect tracking scripts.

I can safely ignore ads generally but what I want is to discourage the practice of annoying placements to farm clicks. If they want clicks then they can have as many of my fake ones as they wish.

Rentlar,

Censorship/bad moderation wasn’t the main reason I left but it was a small factor…

A subreddit (wpt) implemented a rule banning linking to other communities or posts. I had a comment removed for that, I tried to ask for clarity on why and it took two back and forths to figure it out which rule I broke, when/where it was implemented because it wasn’t on their sidebar. I thought Reddit was all about linking to places so I was just surprised, not really upset…

I was mainly upset that Reddit was messing with 3rd party apps while the 1st party one remained a broken, data-grubby mess. The quality of major subreddits were heading way downhill and the bot-spam disguising as real commenters was getting on me too.

When Reddit broke .compact mode for the last time, I could already begin to feel in the wind I needed to jump ship soon. In mid-March, the API went down for some time on my 6th Reddit cake day, that was the day I signed up for this account and slowly began my 4 month transition to Lemmy, and haven’t posted or commented since July.

Rentlar,

Sorry that it hasn’t lived up to your expectations.

I don’t believe that the federation model “fixes” tribalism and in fact encourages it in an echo-chamber kind of fashion, by clustering like minded individuals in communities in its own servers with their own moderators.

On the other hand, in my experience this place overall feels a little more mature. Sure you have circlejerk threads and there’s a lot of controversial news that in a couple cases have evolved into online flamewars. I’ve also observed more often where two people disagreeing initially come to a mutual understanding and agreement downthread, that hardly ever happens in online forums.

Rentlar,

In simplest terms, the two magnets are trying to pull toward each other equally. But when you glue them on the board, that glue holds the magnets apart, and “pushes” them the same amount that the magnets “pull” towards each other, hence no movement.

There would only be a movement if one side was pulling more than the other. The hand is providing that imbalance at first which moved the car.
