Rentlar, to privacyguides in Why you shouldn't use a SIM card and use an hotspot as an alternative

This would make life very difficult for the vast majority of people. Many 2FA schemes only have SMS available and a SIP/VoIP number sometimes are barred from using them.

It’s an interesting experiment though, so I applaud this person for trying out a way to maximize their personal privacy.

I’ve tried carrying multiple devices but it’s honestly hard to do.

I gotta say I love this meme. I think about it every time a tech company does something really scummy to take away features and products that people have purchased (and not rented/leased).

Rentlar, to asklemmy in Why do you think so many people misuse asklemmy?

A: People don’t read the sidebar.

Rentlar, to memes in Lemmy isn't what I expected but I love this place

Aww. Great meme. I do my part and try to post pictures in !Vancouver and !Toronto every few days.

Once I’m done posting all my pictures, in a few months, I will probably repost them to a pictures community on Lemmy for more people to see.

Rentlar, (edited ) to selfhosted in Sounds like Haier is opening the door!

Respectfully, I disagree. Yes, indeed this first message is PR damage control, but there is something to be gained here for the FOSS community.

This backtrack sends the message out, discouraging other companies with legal departments from trying the same trick else they risk sales. If a positive resolution comes out of this (A. Andre’s project becomes officially supported by Haier with more features whilst being more efficient with API calls, or B. Haier develops a local API option) then it shows other companies there is value in working together with the FOSS community rather than viewing them as an adversary or as competition to be eliminated.

Rentlar, (edited ) to selfhosted in Sounds like Haier is opening the door!

I’m glad the threat of being on a FOSS Hall of Shame is effective for some companies, and that they can’t just frivolous lawsuit away a hobby developer without consequences to their bottom line, which would have set a bad precedent against small-time FOSS developers everywhere.

Now their status to me is moved from “Shitlist” to “Shitlist Pending”, they’ve talked their talk so now it’s time to see them walk their walk. Best would be to allow users to control their Haier products from their own servers rather than Haier’s. That will reduce their cloud computing bills from 3rd party users but they can still offer “compelling value” in their walled garden ecosystem as a simple one-and-done setup. Win-win right?

Comm: wpa_supplicant being the wifi function makes me suspicious of your wifi hardware as well before I saw the rest of your post. I’ve had the best success with PCIe based wifi cards (if this is a desktop pc)

Rentlar, (edited ) to asklemmy in Does AI-generated art posted on lemmy bother you?

Maybe 1 in 10 AI generated images posted here I look at that are any interest to me.

Most character mashups outside of a handful aren’t very interesting (the pokemon museum one was neat). Most are kinda meh, but don’t bother me as at least with my current settings only a few AI art communities appear on my feed.

Rentlar, (edited ) to linux in Low battery life due to high power consumption on t490 thinkpad. (help needed)

Well Li-ion batteries are known in conventional wisdom to degrade to 70% of brand new battery life after being charged 500-1000 times. So if it was supposed to have 8 hours when new then 5-6 makes sense.

When I played around with my laptop’s power settings, the LCD screen and screen-brightness were a big power draw between 3W at dim to like 15W at max. That and all wireless functions off, if you can have an ethernet cord plugged in, no bluetooth or USB devices plugged then you can maximize your battery life. Years ago I got my laptop to host a minecraft server with screen off to like 4-5 W at idle.

E: And don’t forget if you have a backlit keyboard to turn that off.
