OhmsLawn, (edited ) in What's the consensus on swearing here

Cursing all the time is like yelling all the time. It loses its effect. That said, If you’re going to swear, don’t fucking censor your words. It’s just stupid.

jcrabapple, in What search engine do you recommend that isn't Google or Bing?
@jcrabapple@infosec.pub avatar

Half a dozen people in here already mentioned it, but Kagi has completely changed the search game and changed the way I use the Internet. It’s like an old school search engine with modern conveniences like a chat bot and summarizer, but without the ads and other shenanigans.

cashews_best_nut,

Ugh, paid. In this economy!?

jcrabapple,
@jcrabapple@infosec.pub avatar

$5/month. Worth it.

jemikwa,

Even better if you can get into a family plan with friends

praise_idleness,

except it’s not for me… I search way, way more than 300/month and $10/m honestly sounds a little unreasonable for a search engine.

Mr_Blott,

Cool, don’t use it then. Enjoy your SEO optimised search results

For the huge majority of people, $5 and 300 searches is plenty, and great value for actually useful results

skeeter_dave,

For that price I can just spool up a vps and run a Searxng instance.

festus,

I know, that was my reaction at first too. But I tried it for a month and honestly it’s an amazing search engine. If it helps you to know, when you search they also use the (paid) search APIs of other search engines and aggregate the results in a way to get something better than any individual engine - so your searches actually have a decent marginal cost for them.

It’s either your wallet or your personal information…

A surprisingly and insanely expensive to run and manage a search engine that isn’t just a reskin on bing (DDG). Even more so when you can’t mine your users for data.

Kagei is doing really good stuff and the quality of results I get are much higher. The $10/m is it easily paid off within even a day or two’s use in my normal job. Never mind all the personal research that I do.

Is a different model that is a not providing you with the best results that you are looking for. As opposed to steering you towards ads or towards partnerships. I like it.

RootBeerGuy,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I totally get the sentiment of saying when you pay you are not the product, however… what does any company stop from still collecting data anyway? I know that the kagi people deny that but why should anyone trust that.

Companies have fucked customers/consumers over so much, there is no trusting anyone when it comes to data collection. It is just so easy. Even if they don’t use it right now, why not just collect it anyway.

So, while I’d love to pay a little bit to support a service like that, I am so jaded by how dishonest companies have been about stuff like that, that I am not really willing to also give them money in addition.

    Cocksucker. Because it sucks more cocks than it does dirt. Which is zero in both cases.

    You did with this post, fart boy.

    I read your username as fart boy at first so that’s what I’m calling you.

    Nothing ruined Christmas, it was great.

    CausticFlames, in What's the best approach/pathway to learning iOS development?

    Recently for a project of mine between me and a couple of friends, we needed to make an iOS app having never made one before. Our solution since we didn’t have reliable access to Xcode, which you need to be able to get it onto an iPhone, was to just make an Android application in Flutter. Since it’s cross-platform we used the Android simulator to test things, and then compiled it for iOS after the fact.

    All this to say you could honestly start there with flutter and not bother too much with native swift if you dont own a Mac or Macbook. If you DO own a Mac, I’d simply start with reading the swift documentation ;)

    I personally enjoy DDG. Their privacy policy for their search is straightforward and there’s no evidence that they’re not abiding by it. I find it tends to prioritize higher quality blogs and articles ahead of social media results.

    I sometime use Brave Search as it seems to do better at giving social media/forum results as they seem to be prioritized higher by it, when I’m looking for more discussion-based content.

    heyfrancis,
    @heyfrancis@lemmy.ml avatar

    +1 for DDG, but i dont get it why some comments here said it is just bing

    StupidBrotherInLaw, (edited )

    Because DDG uses Bing’s API. Basically, you submit a search to DDG, DDG submits that search to Bing, Bing provides results to DDG who repackages them as DDG, then provides that to you.

    crimroy,

    Which is great, privacy-wise, but results-wise it is just Bing. DDG is what I use, but that’s all it is

    RagingRobot, in So, who or what ruined Christmas this year?

    Christmas was good but things costing more now had me stressing all month. It’s harder to budget now than it used to be.

    justlookingfordragon, (edited ) in Is there any way to flag OC lemmy/fediverse posts? Maybe an optional checkbox "OC lemmy/fediverse content" or something that marks the post with an OC badge or something similar?
    @justlookingfordragon@lemmy.world avatar

    I just think that Lemmy can’t survive if there is no way to make people aware that a particular post is OC to a fediverse-Plattform.

    I have seriously no idea what you even mean by that. Care to elaborate why a site that managed to exist without an OC tag for nearly half a decade is suddenly doomed if there’s no extra OC tag now? Or why good content can not be appreciated if it doesn’t have the right tags?

    DandomRude, (edited )
    @DandomRude@lemmy.world avatar

    Well, maybe lemmy is just not for me.

    Edit:

    I expect a social media site to produce original content via its community. Even on a link aggregator style site, there should be more than just expressing an opinion - I can and should do that to greater effect on the site that provided the content in the fist place. After all, it’s about a discussion, not about seeing my particular opinion validated by many like-minded people. So I’m of the opinion that Lemmy needs original content. If that can’t be encouraged even at a basic UI level, I have little hope that lemmy will ever produce genuine content, because there’s no point in going to the trouble if you can just post some link or screenshot to greater effect instead, which you just copy and paste from another post on another platform. And that’s where the problem lies for me: I don’t think Lemmy has enough relevance just by commenting on bot posts. That’s why I’m asking for possible solutions, but nobody seems to want to hear that here. So my quick answer was: “Well, maybe lemmy is just not for me.” Simply because I thought that meaningful, objective dialog and genuine content would be possible here. After about 8 months on this platform, I can’t generally confirm that. This post with a rather neutral question confirms my negative impression - only downvotes. You can perhaps imagine that this didn’t go as I would have hoped. Maybe it was the word “flag” that did not go well with the folks here, but that is basically what i meant: make OC content more prominent because it takes way more effort then your standard link or copy/paste meme. Please just give at least some credit to real the content - that would be a very welcomed change from your average social site.
