They made a rule against using bird houses in a demolition contest because of me. It’s not my fault they asked for the most effective way of getting through a steel plate instead of the most precise.

BOFH666,

Please tell us more…

bunkyprewster,

I would love more details.

So there I was with something of an informal competition in front of me to make the “best” shaped charge to blow throw about a two inch steel plate. It was really just something like practicing skills and maybe showing off creativity.

Most people took “best” to mean most efficient, precise, or cleanly shaped hole in the metal. I took a different meaning. A Mongo minded meaning.

People showed up with their creations and proceeded to pack them with explosives. Most were C4 filled and under half a pound, many of them much less. Shaped charges made of coins, wine bottles, whatever else.

I brought a bird house similar to:

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/c66875ed-aa1f-4768-9bbd-4a25212aa42b.jpeg

Removed the copper roof, put it in a 5 gallon bucket and proceeded to fill the bucket with as much C4 as it could hold. I don’t know how much. It was a lot. More explode means more good.

My charge had to go last for fear of disrupting everything else. I put a dachshund sized hole in the steel plate along with a massive crack. Penetrated the dirt a few feet down. Somebody even recovered the copper penetrator and turned it into a keychain.

After that they put a size limit on how much explosives you could use. Really not my fault there wasn’t a limit in the first place.

Upsidedownturtle, in If Trump loses in 2024, do you think he'd run in 2028?

I’d bet if he loses in '24 his health will start declining quickly and will use health related reasons as a means to avoid punishment for crimes committed.

Arbiter,

I mean, it’s likely the same will happen if he wins.

When I was still in a band we played the same venue that I saw one of my favorite bands play at once. That was really cool, even though it was on a Monday and we just played to other bands.

shinigamiookamiryuu, in What's something you're proud of doing?

It just so happens I’m proud of something I did two hours ago as I write this sentence. A friend of mine said they needed a constant companion for the time being, and another friend said they needed a certain demographic to be friends with, and after realizing the first friend fell under that demographic, I thought “wait, do these two people know each other”. Three hours ago as I write this sentence, I introduced them, and they really hit it off. I just made three people very happy.

shinigamiookamiryuu, in If Trump loses in 2024, do you think he'd run in 2028?

Since when has a politician known when to quit?

someguy3,

George Washington?

shinigamiookamiryuu,

He did serve for two terms. Back then, that was the most someone could do. The idea he could’ve been a monarch if he wished isn’t exactly accurate given the combination of public pressure, the way other founding fathers weighed in, and the fact that America’s then-neighboring allies the Haudenosaunee civilization was already a democracy superior to even the ancient Greeks.

That’s awesome - well done! Reminded me of something else, story below.

For anyone that watched MythBusters, you’re probably aware the two main hosts, Adam and Jaimie, didn’t like each other because they were two different clashing personalities and tough to work with. There was a pirate myths episode, and Adam went all out dressing as a pirate and using a very heavy faux-pirate accent. Jaimie was laughing so hard during that scene that his whole head was red! One of the most endearing moments of the show, and something I treasure because this show was so influential for me growing up.

Props to anyone like @Vanth that makes the normally serious person laugh!

if he wins in 2024, he’ll run in 2028, and 2032, etc. He’ll win those with 99% of the vote, just like his buddy Putin.

dingus,

Well, thankfully I feel like he’s statistically unlikely to all that much longer.

Coreidan,

Ya that’s not how it work but thanks for your fiction story

morphballganon,

He won’t run. He’ll waddle.

TrueStoryBob, in How do you cope with the state of the world today?

Best advice I have is to reach out in your local community to help where you can.

Doesn’t matter if it’s a municipal food bank, a church running a shelter, a charity helping battered spouses, or some kind of a mutual aid group getting people caught up on the bills… just working with others to help fix what you can does an amazing amount for your mental health. Volunteer to help shelter and feed migrants or the homeless. There’s after school programs for kids in single parent households or who’s parents have to work too much to be there for them. Cities across the US have citizens councils where local problems are brought and attempts to solve them are made.

I know it all sounds cliche and it’s all a bandaid on the bigger picture’s problems but, in terms of your own mental health it can do wonders… plus I guarantee groups local to you need an extra set of hands on a regular basis. When bad things are going around, we start to worry… when the bad things are enormous and out of any semblance of our control we think we can do nothing. That’s not true, you can do something, just on a local or regional scale. Reach out and offer to help in any way you can.

I don’t think he’ll be alive in 2028 TBH, but if he doesn’t hamberder himself to death before then, I think he’d run either way.

shinigamiookamiryuu, in What software do you wish that existed?

There aren’t a lot of software I wish existed, but there is one I’m helping to work on. Having a similar concept to the Hypothesis toolbar, it’s a fanmade combination of Pokémon Go and a toolbar. Imagine, instead of travelling the world and seeing Pokémon superimposed on the world, you’re travelling the internet and see Pokémon superimposed on random webpages.

uriel238, in So is the US slipping into Civil War?
@uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

What is curious to me is these are state departments disagreeing, though the previous civil war was fought between federal and state governments with raised armies.

This time I was expecting the police vs. militants. Uncontrolled civil unrest. Portland and Minneapolis but spread across the nation, cranked to eleven.

BartyDeCanter,

Portland and Minneapolis? So like, a protest/campout in one or two square blocks while everyone else goes about their normal business?

Facebones,

And the same footage of that one or two blocks being ran for over 6 months on loop

uriel238,
@uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

In Minneapolis at least one police station was burned down, as well as some commercial buildings. But what is interesting to me is the degree of lethality law enforcement tends to resort to during even peaceful protests.

What I thought was interesting in Portland were the DHS Stormtroopers / LGMs abducting protestors without identifying themselves or their purpose, which figured into to escalation of the protests around the ICE building.

So yes, I’m expecting either white power militant groups or law enforcement, masked up and without identifying marks to conduct raids on minority neighborhoods and community buildings associated with left-aligned organizations like BLM.

That or law enforcement accelerates its usual overpolicing of non-white neighborhoods and covers larger regions until the people can’t stand it anymore and start organizing resistance efforts. In Nazi-occupied Paris, it was the brutality of the German occupation that compelled Parisians to fight back. La Résistance evolved from independent mischief-makers to a formidable fighting force across three years.

But you’re right, if it’s just protests and OWS style campouts, and the police don’t misbehave too much, it’s not going to be much of a civil war. But so far, we can count on the police getting their murder on when they feel the civil unrest doesn’t respect their authority enough. And unlike Ferguson (or the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s) smartphones with cameras are ubiquitous, so they can’t deny when they pull a hit like Tamir Rice.

We thought we were getting a proper class war and instead we get fascist versus not fascists but they still hate you

ani,

IndyRap,

This is so aggravating. You knew the intent and you know what they mean yet you still find the need to correct.

Tar_alcaran,

Oh no, I gave information to someone asking for information, without taking any offense or getting upset. I’m such a monster.

Atin, in Seeking Perspectives: Trans Athletes in Women's Sports

The reason we have women’s sports is because women are extremely rarely able to compete against men in most sports.

When MTF trans person reaches adulthood they have already generally attained a physical advantage over cis women that no amount of hormones and surgery will diminish. Their current levels of testosterone will have no impact on bone structure and muscle development gained through puberty. This can be shown by the lack of female to male trans athletes.

I am all for Trans rights, but becoming a professional or elite athlete is not a right, as much as I would love to become a racing driver.

Perhaps a mixed gender/sex competition could work, but allowing people that have transitioned after puberty took hold is blatantly unfair. Obviously there are some sports, such as shooting, darts, snooker etc where this advantage isn’t really applicable.

Unfortunately in life compromises sometimes have to be made, and I believe that for males transitioning to female, not allowing them to compete as elite female athletes is a compromise that needs to be made for the greater good.

moody,

How many elite-level trans women athletes can you name who are actually top of their field above cis women?

gnuplusmatt,

You know that testosterone is required to maintain muscle mass, right?

A_Random_Idiot, (edited )

The best thing that I’ve seen from the anti-trans movement in womens sports, is the number of cis women who end up falling more afoul of the rules due to their genetic predisposition to have a higher than average level of testosterone for women with regards to anti-trans rules that almost always revolve around bodily testosterone levels.

Anti-trans rules will hurt women in womens sports far more than it will hurt trans women (as far as numbers go, to be clear), and no one wants to think or talk about that.

Trans women in sports are not dominating any field. All the outrage you see from it is like that Marathon from a year or 2 ago where a woman got pissed off for losing to a trans woman who finished infront of her, both of them in the high thousands of placement, not like 1st and 2nd place… Both were beaten by thousands of other women, but that woman had a hissy fit because one of the women was trans.

JoBo,

the lack of female to male trans athletes.

Stop making shit up. You hear more about trans women in sport because misogyny, not because trans men don’t succeed in sport.
