It depends on in what context. Sometimes I explore the implied “loopholes” that come along.
Example: Due to insufficient management, there is a high demand for a legally mandated universal curfew within a given area of the world, where everyone must be in their homes past a certain time. But that also means that, if violating it is a concern, officers must give you a free ride between places.
If someone will legit get hurt or killed by incompetence, you speak up. That’s time-sensitive, and you can’t afford to twiddle your thumbs just because you’re anxious or whatever. Immediacy of physical harm is the one situation where action is most important above all and even if you’re shy and withdrawn and generally don’t get along socially with people, you can’t cater to that in certain situations and you have to do something yourself to fix the situation if incompetence is going to cause physical harm.
In situations where an entire company is being incompetent as a whole or is doing something terrible, you leave/quit. Yes, it’s sometimes a choice between removing yourself from an immoral situation or starving–and I have, absolutely, chosen to be poorer and starving rather than be a part of certain things. But other people make that choice on their own knowing their own internal situation and context.
If someone’s just being dumb and the consequences of their dumbness are my own irritation or frustration but nothing that actually matters but my poor feelings, I often ignore it. There is no way as a human to fix everything that is wrong with everyone everywhere, so it becomes important to learn how to internally deal with your disappointment when you discover that the world is imperfect.
Online, I don’t believe really in “debate” (I don’t learn from active, aggressive live-action debate–it’s more likely to trigger me to shut down and STOP learning, which is bad), I learn more from reading other people’s convos. So I will sometimes respond to someone who is being dumb, not as a way to get into a debate with them, but to get my perspective out there so lurkers who learn as I do by reading more than interacting have something to chew over that’s better than the bullshit I saw. I don’t expect anyone to take my words uncritically–that’s not how people learn–I’m just massively disinterested in debate since it fucks up my own ability to keep pressing forward with learning. (Trauma in my past means my responses to stress are all fucky, so I jury-rig things to work around it.)
person1 comes over "Do it like this" person1 goes away person2 comes over "No no, do it like that" person2 goes away person1 comes over "Why don't you do it in the way I told you?"
Would love to see an Otherland adaptation into a series. There was a film being planned but haven’t heard anything in a while. Tad Williams is a fantastic author.
Thanks mate! I’ve been studying Islam, Christianity (my family is religious but tolerates different beliefs, so I have a mix of both worlds), as well as Buddhism. However, none of these religions really grabbed my attention.
Corruptible assumes they weren’t started for that purpose in the first place.
I wish there was a way to know what the mix of true believers and opportunists involved in each of the religions’ founding. Like the story of Constantine includes elements of both (he wanted a way to increase the unity across the Empire because it was getting hard to convince Iberian Romans to take up arms for wars in the middle East, but there’s also a story that he dreamed about having a cross on this shield leading to winning a battle). That wasn’t the founding of Christianity, but it is the reason Europe adopted it.
Or looking at the old testament, it seems to be a combination of general living advice/laws, events based on actual historic things (like David and Solomon were probably real), and stuff likely made up after the fact (like Genesis). I’d say the ones who made up Genesis weren’t likely true believers (of what they were writing), but it’s hard to say if they believed in the rest of it and just wanted to fill the gaps in good faith, or enjoyed the clerical power and filled in those blanks because not filling them in would have threatened that power. Or some combination of the two.
Weed, alcohol, other drugs and Bar stories. I do not partake, but due to it being common amung my peers it is hard to avoid. To them that thing they experienced at that one bar 4 weeks ago is the funniest thing, but I cannot relate at all and its kinda frustrating because I do not intend to partake in such activities just to keep up socially. Same with smoke breaks.
I seem to get the version on how wasted they got and sick they were afterwards. It’s like they unlock new achievement badges each weekend by how much they throw up the next day.
I’m left thinking you’re getting into your late 30s or 40s now. This isn’t your teens and early 20s anymore.
I’ve enjoyed when seeing some of these hard partiers mature and nope out now after a few years. But honestly being a alcoholic seems to the baseline starting place for many when it comes to socializing.
I know I’m a drag for them when I’m at a nice hotel and I’m not joining in with a cooler bag full of beers or hard stuff to get the party started before going to dinner. The gf is younger and a little frustrated I’m just not interested in that anymore or was I ever really.
She’s coming to terms with her inability to not be sick after a night of drinking as she gets older now too. Being health conscious she’s coming to the realization that alcohol consumption is perhaps not the best thing for her long term either based on the health of her long term friends still trying to keep up with being wasted every weekend.
I’ve been playing World of tanks blitz. I had fun, then discovered there is a world of warships blitz as well, which has a Dutch line of ships. It was the 1st game I heard of with Dutch content, so I’m now kinda hooked on it, chasing after all Dutch ships. It wasn’t exactly the name of the game, but more the hint of the content.
BTW I’m Dutch, when you haven’t guessed it already. ;)
For 3 or 4 seasons I completely ignored Game of Thrones - the name just threw me off. To some extend I’m happy I did - there was a lot of content to catch up to when I finally did give the first episode a shot :)
Well done for not letting the end ruin the beginning, I’ll rewatch it every so often but my god it leaves a sour taste these days. The last season is enough to undo all the good work they’d done to that point, it’s such a shame :(
The ending is not great, but it definitely was an ending. Some shows can’t even manage that. And to me it hasn’t spoilt all the previous seasons - those were solid.
Yeah I still rewatch and enjoy the heck out of it, but then the choice is either an incomplete story or a godawful ending with characters that barely resemble the ones I enjoyed initially.
I don’t hate the show as a whole but it doesn’t get near my top 10, yet it could’ve been my number 1 of all time if they turned the last 2 seasons into 4 or 5 with the same quality as the first 4 or 5.
I honestly don’t even hate the final picture, it’s just the complete lack of justification to get us there I can’t stand, and the embarrassing endings of some characters who deserved more (or should have died sooner).
Warby Parker. Something about the name just completely frosts me. I know I should grow up and give them a chance (because Luxotica is fucking evil). But it really turns me off. “Warby Parker”…sounds like the name of some kid who’s dad owns racehorses.
I think part of the reason I use Zenni Optical online is because Warby Parker sounds like a place that’ll offer grandma glasses for stupid-expensive prices.
I tried Zenni a couple of times. Really wanted to like them. But the glasses they sent me were horrible. I do have a somewhat complex prescription, though. I suspect for basic prescriptions they are OK.
Mine are basic and yes, zenni crushes it every time. I even get my phone number lazered into the ear thingies so that people can call me if I lose them.
Glad I’m not the only one. I am highly averse to anything that sounds like a “lifestyle brand”. Hollister and such. I’ll never understand people who wear expensive brand name t-shirts and provide free advertising for giant corporations. Ryan George made a pretty funny YouTube video about this strange phenomenon.
