GhostSpectator, in People who have made and successfully kept their New Year's resolution, what was it and how did you stay motivated?

I once went 28 years without having sex, and then again for 7 years.

HappycamperNZ,

So whats the resolution? Is it work on self, find partner with low standards or more money for hookers???

timetravel, in What are your dental hygiene tips and hacks

Waterpik, both between the teeth and then the low power gum one, followed by rinsing with Listerine complete, takes such good care of my gingivitis that I don’t even need to get cleanings for plaque anymore. I might scrape some off every 6 months or a year if even. I used to get migraines from it daily, then needed cleaning every 6 months. Total game changer

Make a New Year’s Theme instead - CGP grey had a video on this. Then, when the first things you try related to the theme fail (or feel bad, or don’t make sense anymore), pick something else in the theme and try that instead.

Productivity themed year got me to:

  • Learn AutoHotkey
  • Setup a central collection of notes
  • Use a calendar app properly
  • Finish several (profession related) books
  • Track my internet time

and more! And, for maybe the first time, I finally feel like I did something with this whole resolution thing.

Person264,

How do you use a calendar app properly?

Artisian,
@Artisian@lemmy.world avatar

For me, actually put things in it, setup notifications for the day before (and on a device I actually see), add family, and check it before scheduling (some) things.

HappycamperNZ,

I came here with a similar discussion.

I kept mine by following this advice before I watched the video. The general idea was i wanted to have my week off in the holidays with my family and not be worried about the future, kinda evolved to a “how I view myself” theme would be the best way to describe it. Went hard at gym for 6 months before long term injury came up again, so focused on work and uni instead. Dropped one uni paper but got a- in the other, and turned my company around from 20% monthly loss to 10% profit.

I don't own a timeshare. Feel pretty good about that decision.

The numbers they were showing us seemed to make sense. If we spent an average of X on vacations for Y years compared to the cost of the timeshare and fees, the timeshare was cheaper AND we could trade our week in a ski area for timeshares anywhere in the world. How could we not buy into this? Might have signed, but when they told us we couldn't take any of the information with us and had to decide NOW, I knew something wasn't right. Had to say no for almost an hour, but but we were eventually allowed to leave the "no obligation presentation" required for our "free" weekend.

When I did more research, I found dozens of people trying to unload their purchases for far less than the company was selling weeks to new members.

I'll NEVER own anything using that kind of sales strategy.

crazyCat,

I have this side dream that when I’m retired I’m going to go around to all the vacation spots where they prey on people for this, dress and act like an easy mark and mess with these terrible people.

Dodged a massive bullet there youtu.be/Bd2bbHoVQSM?

flooppoolf, in If you could only listen to someone talk about one topic for the rest of your life, what would it be, and why?

Medicine

otter,

Any particular areas of medicine?

Also I haven’t been promoting the communities well enough but we’ve got some on Lemmy that could use more activity. I was planning to get them going more in the new year

!medicine for r/medicine

!medicine for the hub to other stuff

  • !health isn’t listed there yet but will be soon
flooppoolf,

Right now I’m a big nerd for infectious disease but tbh that changes every other three months. :)

NOSin, in If you could only listen to someone talk about one topic for the rest of your life, what would it be, and why?

Story telling I’d ask them to improvise or use known stories to give me examples, I now have stories for a lifetime

ulemmyagain, in What's a proper response to another dog attempting to mount your dog multiple times and the owner really not doing anything about it?

MilitantAtheist,

Waldowal, (edited ) in What are your best flight tips and tricks?
@Waldowal@lemmy.world avatar
  1. (On Delta planes at least) The aisle armrest comes up if you press a little trigger underneath near where is meets the seat. Makes it easier to get up if you’re in the aisle seat and to exit the plane.
  2. If you are always hot, get a windows seat. When you’re at altitude, the side of the plane gets cold, so the window seat tends to be cooler.
  3. If you are on the tall side, once the fight attendant isn’t looking anymore, put your backpack or laptop bag behind your legs / knees instead of under the seat. Then you have full legroom available to stretch out.
  4. If the person in front of you reclines their seat back, ask the fight attendant for a pillow and a can of soda. Remove the pillow case, and put the full soda can in it. Then batter up, and bash that fucker right in the face. Just kidding. Don’t do this. Just calm down.
HatchetHaro,

Having flown many times, I can confirm that the aisle armrest triggers exist on most major airlines. Any time I sit down on a flight, the first thing I do is look for that button.

Aussiemandeus,
@Aussiemandeus@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah and then i look around to watch others try raise their own arm rests to no avail and laugh to myself

ironeagl,

The reason it’s hard to find is because they should be down most of the time. In sudden turbulence, even if you’re wearing a seatbelt, they keep you from spilling out into the aisle.

Also be aware that people walking by, the food cart, etc. can cause it to suddenly slap back down.

otter, in People who have made and successfully kept their New Year's resolution, what was it and how did you stay motivated?

People have lots of great tips for why resolutions fail and how to do them better

I heard another similar spin: pick a few areas of your life and have them be better than they are at the start of the year

Like say education or relationships with people, the goal is some kind of improvement by the end. You can go as big or as small within those afterwards.

Tolookah, in If you could only listen to someone talk about one topic for the rest of your life, what would it be, and why?

Trains.

My kid is a train kid, I’m already listening to it non-stop, I won’t make things worse for me or him.

Im_old,

Hello fellow parent. I feel your anguish. I have star wars and dinosaurs. Tbh I’m not even mad, most of the times… I’d just need some more time in the morning before the uninterrupted stream of words!

Tolookah,

Exactly. He’s turning into a Lego kid, but uh, did you know that Lego has trains? (They recently put out a gorgeous Oriental Express train that even I want now.). My biggest gripe about trains is they take up so so so much space.

I am excited for his teenage years for when he wants to sleep in and I get to wake him up.

But today is Christmas, and if you celebrate, Merry Christmas. (Mine is waking now, and it’s 430 am, time to stall him for 2 hours, as my daily gift to momma)

infreq, in People who have made and successfully kept their New Year's resolution, what was it and how did you stay motivated?

Mine was to stop having those stupid New Year’s resolutions. It worked.

Nemo, in If you could only listen to someone talk about one topic for the rest of your life, what would it be, and why?

Ethics. It touches on every other subject.

Apytele, in What are your best flight tips and tricks?

I’ve traveled with my intellectually disabled sister before. If you’re traveling with anyone with a major disability of any kind but similar severity, I highly recommend you pack disposable gloves and wet wipes, and possibly a small emergency snack (especially if they have diabetes, my sister will just beat the shit out of you if she gets too hungry, some people might die or some shit).

TheTimeKnife, in Lets start a new Lemmy holiday tradition. What's a song you've been digging lately?
@TheTimeKnife@lemmy.world avatar

Orange Blossoms by Goldford

Sleep Deprivation by Chance Peña

Discovered them last week and I’ve had them in my rotation since.
