CorrodedCranium, in Corporate Censorship Bring You Here?
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Some of the subreddits I follow are related to emulation and piracy which has caused some subreddits to get banned or at least take action to limit legal threats. When the Reddit blackout happened a lot of them went down and said they were shifting here. I find they’re a little more open to discussion than other places that just copy and paste some old post or refer you to a Wiki

user1234, in What's a food you love, that isn't worth making from scratch?

Cheese

Salad_Fries,

This 100%…

It is so expensive/time consuming/finicky for a product that best case scenario is comparable to store bought.

MeanEYE,
@MeanEYE@lemmy.world avatar

Depends on type. Some cheese is easy to produce. Others require a lot of effort, time, controlled environment, etc.

SupraMario,

Squeaky cheese! So damn expensive if your in any other state other than WI…

MeanEYE,
@MeanEYE@lemmy.world avatar

Squeaky cheese

Didn’t know this was a thing. Niice. One more thing to add to the list of things to try.

flambonkscious,

Paneer or even better, halloumi?

RBWells,

Paneer I only like homemade, but it’s so easy I hesitate to call it cheese. Pressed curds. Halloumi I don’t like, and what’s funny is I was just thinking today that now that I like swiss I like every cheese in existence but forgot about Halloumi.

drphungky,

Yeah I’ll probably never buy ricotta again after making homemade, unless I was really in a pinch for time I guess. You save a decent chunk of change on home made too. Mozzarella I’d go either way on.

jjjalljs, in What do you like about liberalism, capitalism and conservatism?

Does conservatism mean “preserve the way things are”? Things are bad. Things are really bad for a lot of people. Trying to preserve things in such a state is difficult to justify.

Is it “outgroups to bind, in groups to defend”? Well that’s obviously a bad framework.

Zima, (edited ) in What do you like about socialism?

I think of it as a mental disease societies can catch. I do acknowledge that is full of good intentions. it just doesn't work and ends in missery. it just fails to account for basic facts like human nature.

rhythmisaprancer,
@rhythmisaprancer@kbin.social avatar

Sounds like capitalism

Zima,

you might have hearing issues.

Ensign_Crab,

Yeah, capitalism is completely bereft of good intentions.

Zima,

yeah. unfortunately rejecting reality and substituting it with your own only works on the mind. it doesn't put food on your stomach.

DriftinGrifter,

Unfortunately attacking someone for holding a different position is why society sucks so much

Zima,

I don't see anyone attacking anyone here. perhaps some light trolling but nothing beyond that.

agamemnonymous,
@agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works avatar

Nope. Capitalism doesn’t have good intentions, just good PR.

Zima, (edited )

at least the way a socialist teacher taught me in primary school (and i don't completely agree with him but it's a good charactherization) you have desirable values of freedom and equality and they are in conflict. again I don't necesarrily agree with that and it boils down to the fact that when equality is implemented is always by averaging down everyone which is at the expense of freedom. anyways so supposedly you have capitalism as a system that places freedom above equality and communism as a system that places equality above freedom. so it's not really about good and bad but a conflict of virtues.

it's completely besides the point but i do rank freedom slightly above equality. in reality i would like to ensure some minimum level of support for everyone , i think that should be a pretty low level of support. just the bare minimun e.g. ensured education and equal chance at success at life, and health care depending on the actual amount of resources that can be allocated to it, nothing unrealistic but just the minimum to live without suffering, including other stuff like food and clothing and shelther as well. and then to have the freedom so that if anyone wants more than the minimum they should work for it. I'm sure that the people that wanted to work would be able to produce enough value to provide that minimum life support for everyone. so about 80% freedom and 20% equality.

agamemnonymous,
@agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works avatar

Capitalism isn’t about freedom, it’s about exploitation. The “freedom” it prioritizes is the freedom of individuals to lay private claim to the value of public resources (land, natural resources, etc), then use their control of those resources to lay claim to the value of the labor of others (the employee/employer relationship). It’s literally parasitism.

Capitalism is the “freedom” to extract profit. Profit is the difference between the price you sell something for, and the cost to produce it. It naturally results in paying employees less than the value of their labor, and/or charging the customer more than the value of a product. It is fundamentally a grift, profiting by skimming off value as a middleman. The freedom of the capitalist comes fundamentally at the restriction of freedom of everyone else, the majority “averages down”, that’s just a mathematical truth.

The longer capitalism exists, the more “freedom” is siphoned into generational wealth, and the more extreme inequality becomes. Capitalists gain the freedom to live a luxurious life without actually doing any work, while everyone else loses the freedom to use land and natural resources. It’s literally just “dibs” metastasized.

magic_lobster_party,

Capitalism takes into account for basic facts like human nature.

DessertStorms,

magic_lobster_party,

We’re long past the hunter-gatherer reality with a world population of 20,000, which your post concerns.

DessertStorms,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar
RainfallSonata,

Not that it’s necessarily what you’re implying, but it’s ridiculous to me that people think capitalism is an inevitable result of human nature but socialism isn’t. Either of them are just ideas we made up. The benefits and flaws of each are the result of human nature, just with different influences and in different ways. Socialism may fail to account for the parts of human nature that you find relevant. Because you’ve been brought up in a capitalist system to believe that, OR you’re directly benefiting from its exploitation. That doesn’t mean those are the only relevant parts of human nature.

SatansMaggotyCumFart,

Such a waste of materials, time and shipping just to waste space in a landfill.

beansbeansbeans,

I got this exact pair for my SIL two Christmases ago. She didn’t like them at first, but they were such a hit at her Uni that she loves them now.

Yeah but I got a gut so it’s like adding things to the top of the pile, lol.

LemmyKnowsBest,

actually like a real kangaroo pocket.

OMG does it lead to your internal organs, to your womb? 😳

mihnt,
@mihnt@lemmy.world avatar

Yes.

Moghul,

Pretty sure a kangaroo’s pocket doesn’t lead to their womb either. The kangaroo moves to the pouch after birth to finish developing.

RandomStickman,
@RandomStickman@kbin.social avatar

True. But it got nipples though.

OutlierBlue, (edited )

real kangaroo pocket
zipper at the top

I don’t think real kangaroo pouches have a zipper. They lack an opposable digit to grab the zipper pull. Real kangaroos use snaps.

helpImTrappedOnline,

There was a test group a few years back for pockets with zippers…they were not well received, so they are preparing to make the switch to zippers in 2026.

Kind of like an anorak? That would be a great design for a hoodie! I find hoodie pockets pretty useless for anything but your hands.

But then they censor other libertarians for disagreeing. How libertarian of them

ch00f, (edited ) in What are your best air fryer/oven recipes?

You can do DIY potato fries if you couple the air fryer with sous vide. You need to get the starch out of the potatoes. People will suggest you soak them in water, but that only gets you so far.

Put the raw fries in a ziplock with enough water for them to float around. Put this bag into your water and set it to 170F and let them soak for 20-30 mins. Then dry them out (start in salad spinner and spread out on a towel), coat in oil/salt, and air fry at 400 until done.

The 170F water breaks down the pectin that holds the sugars in the potatoes, so if you don’t sous vide, you end up with caramelization/burned fries. This is actually what McDonald’s does to their fries.

A sous vide wand can be had for around $50, and you just need a big enough pot to hold whatever you’re cooking. They also do wonders for dark meat. Sous vide chicken wings are ridiculously good.

Leax,

Interesting, I’ll give this a try!

PrinceWith999Enemies, in Corporate Censorship Bring You Here?

I left Reddit, deleting all of my content, because I disagreed with the elimination of third party apps and because of Reddit’s response to the community. Full stop. I wasn’t a heavy Twitter user - I tend to enjoy more drawn out discussions and topically focused communities - but I stopped using it entirely because of Elon’s moves, including his rejection of corporate censorship.

I have no problem with a service establishing a ToS that includes trust and safety policies that will remove posts and ban users over hate speech. I have no problem with forced demonetization and deplatforming of hate accounts. I would have no problem if federal and state governments enacted more anti-hate laws to bring us in line with other democracies around the world.

That’s because I do not think that permitting a group of American brown shirts to fly Nazi flags and shout racist slurs at passersby increases freedom. I think it decreases it, because it causes a large part of the population to live in fear. I think hate speech rules by private companies serve the same purpose.

lazylion_ca, in So, who or what ruined Christmas this year?

I won’t saying ruined but put a damper on.

The gf worked today (yay overtime) and was off at 7pm. I figure ill put the turkey roll im the slow cooker around 4:30ish then start the potatoes around 6. The turkey roll was already thawed so 2 hours should have been lots. By 8 pm the temperature setting is still only 110F. Finally I touch the side and realize its room temp. The ceramic pot is barely warm to the touch. The slow cooker died.

We transferred the meat to a tray and put in the oven. Done in half an hour. Late dinner but still good.

I don’t usually bother with boxing day sales, but maybe tomorrow I will. This time I want one with a delayed start timer.

qx128, (edited ) in Corporate Censorship Bring You Here?

I wanted something Reddit-ish to fill time and entertain me. The money-grab moves Reddit was doing annoyed me. The final straw (and most important factor) was the retirement of my favorite viewer app - Apollo. Moving to Lemmy using Voyager is a no brainer compared to Reddit’s shitty user interface.
