neurogenesis, in Are there any people who were offended by Norm MacDonald's comedy? Was he controversial, or nah?

Pretty funny and insightful to me, but I mostly saw him on SNL a long time ago and more recently on Tyson’s Mysteries, where he was hilarious.

kagi.com no ads, great results. It’s $5 a month but worth it imo

canihasaccount,

Seconding. Kagi is the only one that was able to replace Google for me.

GlitzyArmrest,
@GlitzyArmrest@lemmy.world avatar

This is the only true Google replacement I’ve found.

drfuzzyness,

It’s really good. The price tag is worth it imo as they buy results from a host of other search engines including Google, but the results are actually better.

graymess,

I need to try it out. If it’s as good as its reputation implies and stays that way, I’d be $5/mo amount of interested. But I have no idea how many times I’m going to need to search for something per month. Not a fan of that limitation.

Mr_Blott,

You can get 100 searches for free to try it. I’m using it for purchases and technical queries, because the results are hugely less polluted. If I’m searching for, say, a film or a book, I use Google and not one of my paid searches

supercriticalcheese,

For the web search I need to do it’s really not worth it. if my job required good web search results to be effective then it would be a different matter but alas I am not a software developer or an analyst…

EmasXP, in What search engine do you recommend that isn't Google or Bing?

Been using Qwant for maybe a year or so. Recently found Swisscows too. I am not sure if Qwant uses their own index. I remember that they said that they were to create their own index, but the results looks suspiciously similar to Bing. Swisscows for sure runs their own index, and I find the results to be rather good

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

if nothing else qwant has a good map, based on openstreetmap but with a vector renderer and with tripadvisor integration so it’s really easy to find restaurants

Mr_Blott, in Hot tub owners: any tips? any regrets?

I actually look after them for idiots that install them for rentals.

No1 - Use bromine because it smells less than chlorine

No2 use multi bromine as it has anti algae and anti foam in it

No3 keep the pH correct, about 7.2 to 7.4, same as pool

No4 clean the filter every week

No5 kids love hot tubs, hot tubs HATE kids

No6 FUCKIN SHOWER BEFORE YOU USE IT YOU DAFT CUNT NO WONDER IT TURNED INTO FUCKING SOUP FUCK ME

LemmyKnowsBest,

everything makes sense to me except “hot tubs hate kids.” Please explain what happened

Kids are dirty oily greaseballs and they don’t shower before going in

LemmyKnowsBest, (edited )

I would argue that prepubescent kids are not as greasy and oily as adults are, and although EVERYONE should shower before getting into jacuzzi, practically NOBODY does unless they are forced to do so and/or extremely fastidious about it.

Telodzrum,

So . . . Linux users?

Mr_Blott,

Adults get in the tub, relax and drink a G&T

Kids tend to jump in and out, dragging all the crap from the decking/patio with them each time

Plus they’ll just piss in it, rather than getting out 😂

IronicDeadPan, in What is the goofiest Christmas present you received this year?

mcphee.com/products/office-possum

It’s going on/near my desktop dumpster (full of mints)

JakenVeina, (edited ) in Hot tub owners: any tips? any regrets?

Never would have bought one myself, but it came with the house, and it’s one of my favorite things. It’s remarkable how physicall and mentally refreshing it is after doing a bunch of yard work or after a particularly mentally-exhausting day at work.

Ours has broken down twice, though, in 6 years, so between that and regular maintenance, it’s an ongoing expense.

ShittyBeatlesFCPres, in What search engine do you recommend that isn't Google or Bing?

I use startpage.com on desktop. They provide Google results (sort of like DDG uses Bing results) so it’s not some autonomous magic privacy thing but it’s what I want from a search engine.

It reminds me of Google pre-enshittification.

I just make a post in NoStupidQuestions and use y’all like a search engine. :P

I post answers to NoStupidQuestions with most of the keywords you’re looking for and a link to my AI-generated blog. Your move.

B4tid0, (edited ) in So, who or what ruined Christmas this year?
@B4tid0@lemmy.world avatar

Aunt (?) And cousin. Apparently Aunt has being drinking since the 23 by the 24 at night she was drunk out of her mind; insulted and scolded my cousin and his girlfriend in front of everyone in the family dinner at grandma’s because the girlfriend was wearing a croptop. I frankly though it would’ve being about the fact that she is 14 and he is 20. ( But apparently not. I personally left when they arrived. I got told about the fight later) Everybody left or kept on arguing after that. Hopefully your holiday’s dinners are better .

umulu,
@umulu@lemmy.world avatar

14 and 20? WTF!?!? That’s way too young for a partner 20 years of age.

Starkstruck,

Yeah that is a straight up pedophile wtf

B4tid0,
@B4tid0@lemmy.world avatar

Yup. When I mention it , I was screamed at and told “I should mind my own business” , “He is an adult he knows what he is doing” and “who am I do judge other people” I am not proud of THAT situation. My family is fucked but we are ALL welcome at Christmas dinner, I go for the free meal and to hug my grandma and leave right after. Apparently the girlfriend’s family is very close to my cousin’s mother , I don’t know them . Is all messed up (¯―¯٥)

NikkiDimes,

“He is an adult he knows what he is doing”

He probably researched the local law on the issue, has a plan in case he’s questioned by some cop, and carries a card in his wallet with an overview of the applicable laws printed on it.

Yeah, any family that defends this guy deserves to be walked out on.

Wasn’t that a thing in one of the Transformers movies?

Usernameblankface,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, yes it was

B4tid0,
@B4tid0@lemmy.world avatar

I mentioned the law first time I heard of it , one of the uncle’s said “who’s is going to tell? Will you?” And oh boy did that freak me out. This year before leaving my grandma asked me “why are you going against family?” All I said is that I wasn’t trying to have a go at nobody that I was sorry. I hugged her and left. It is all very bitter and sad. I can’t watch.

With some luck I am hopefully leaving town sometime next year. I don’t want to be around if this goes bad and the police is involve, they will probably think it was me if I am around for that. I don’t understand what they are all thinking , and I frankly don’t want to.

Usernameblankface,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

Ah man, vague threats are the worst. You know for sure what they’re meaning, but can’t prove it by quoting what they said. So sad they’re like that

uranibaba,
