SatansMaggotyCumFart, in What’s your go to driving song?

Without Me by Eminem.

Conyak, in Hot tub owners: any tips? any regrets?

I bought a refurbished one about 5 years ago and it had been amazing for my wife and I. We run and lift weights a lot and it really seems to help with recovery. Replace the filters and add chlorine when needed. It’s actually pretty low maintenance for us.

Rhynoplaz, in Corporate Censorship Bring You Here?

Censorship had nothing to do with me leaving. I couldn’t use my app anymore, and I didn’t like theirs, so I found something else.

MightEnlightenYou,

Yeah, same here. I find that the quality of posts, comments and culture is significantly worse here than on reddit but I don’t want to use reddit anymore because of the API stuff.

Can you give any examples? We’d definitely like to know where we can improve things for the better ❤️

deadcatbounce, in What search engine do you recommend that isn't Google or Bing?
@deadcatbounce@reddthat.com avatar

www.startpage.com

Owned now by a marketing company. I’ve been using it for many years and never had my results noticeable affect my advertising incoming.

It’s a proxy for Google which is why I use it. I have really started to use ChatGPT in anger yet as the trivial don’t need it.

I’m not connected to them in any way.

deadcatbounce, in What search engine do you recommend that isn't Google or Bing?
@deadcatbounce@reddthat.com avatar

Firefox allowed you to define the default search and have many many engines listed. That’s been a standard feature for many years.

cerement,
@cerement@slrpnk.net avatar

even simpler – Firefox will auto-detect a lot of search engines – right-click in the search/address bar and if Firefox can detect it, bottom option will be to add that engine to your list

The phrase “Baader-Meinhof effect”

I love pointing out examples of it but always forget the name, leading to an awkward moment when I try to explain it

itsralC,

For the people who hadn’t heard of it (like me): en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frequency_illusion

MuhammadJesusGaySex, in What's the consensus on swearing here

For me personally, I got into a lot of drawn out arguments on Reddit. I said some LGBTQ performers doing a performance that involved a cross was “child friendly” and for 8 months I still got messages from pearl clutching conservatives calling me a pe**. Here, I try to limit my hot takes to 24 hours of engagement, and I try to be more respectful.

Also, I’d like to think that there is a better class of people here than on Reddit. So, I act accordingly. I like my new home. It’s not totally full of assholes yet, and I don’t fancy creating any.

Dettweiler42, in So, who or what ruined Christmas this year?

Being sick AF. People came into work sick because of our asinine sick policy, and now they’re better while I’ve been bed ridden for 3 days.

yesman, in What's a food you love, that isn't worth making from scratch?

French Fries. For those who don’t know, when starting with a potato, you have to fry them twice. Once at a low temp to cook through, then again at a high temp to crisp up and brown. The frozen fries at the grocery have already had the first fry.

The double frying is just too much effort when the frozen stuff is just as good, even in an air fryer. So long as they’re hot, the drive thru can compete with anything you make at home.

I used to feel the same way about egg rolls, but the product you get from scratch is superior to frozen or even take out.

MycelialMass,

You know you can make baked fries right? They are very easy and tasty.

derf82,

What do you think an air fryer is? It’s nothing more than a small convection oven.

Soggy,

Baked “fries” hardly compare. Flavor, texture, it’s all different.

banneryear1868,

I’d rather make Kenji’s crispy potatoes instead now. You add baking soda and boil potatoes for 10 mins, it get the outside super mushy, you toss in a bowl with oil and they get covered in this potato paste, then oven high heat until cwispy.

AngryCommieKender,

For extra yummy at home fried food, mix 4 parts table salt with 1 part MSG and use as fry salt.

skooma_king,

Try letting them soak in water for a while after cutting them. Then dry them off before coating in oil and frying them. We do them in the air fryer that way. Not the same as deep fried but it’s good and close enough for us while being little effort.

ArcticAmphibian, in So, who or what ruined Christmas this year?

Nasty virus with secondary strep infection

Thteven, in What is the goofiest Christmas present you received this year?
@Thteven@lemmy.world avatar

I can never find a tape measure when my mom asks for measurements on something so she gave me a toilet plunger with one chained to it, a hammer with one chained to it, and one with a magnet in it that sticks on the fridge.

helpImTrappedOnline,

Think she’s trying to tell you something else with that plunger.

Thteven,
@Thteven@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, she said I need a plunger to keep under the sink.

funnystuff97, in What word do you always forget?

I have no idea why, but convention. And not a thing where nerds like me gather to dork out about something, but a scientific standard. Whenever I’m explaining something, and someone asks why it operates that way, I’m always like, “it’s that way by… uh… y’know, it’s always been that way.” No clue why I always blank on that word specifically.
