I’ve been poor before but I’ve always had access to food and decent shelter. I use to eat ramen noodles, chili and rice, and baloney sandwiches. I could really stretch out a $20 a week food budget.
When I eat a microwave meal I’m just happy I can afford to enjoy variety in my meals now though I still like sandwiches.
You could be focusing on “it’s amazing how easy it is for me to make food!” But you’re not. Your emotions are leading you somewhere, instead of your rational mind. Next time you recognize that you feel like that, pause, and pay attention to what exactly it is that you are feeling, without judgement. Use your rational mind to observe your emotional state. Just observe it, don’t control it or try to change it. Hopefully you’ll discover something, maybe even the answer you’re looking for.
Nourishment is nourishment. I would love to have a home-cooked three course meal every night, but that's a lot of effort and money to spend on lil' old me. Ready meals are fine for those nights where I can't be bothered to actually prepare a decent meal.
All the major meat producers. And fast food chains.
There’s been so much publicized in recent years about their treatment of animals, their lobbying efforts, how they treat their employees, how they’re ruining the environment, how they fix prices and force farmers to “get on board” or else. It’s really bad but we don’t care so much because it’s hidden beyond our periphery.
I know no one wants to be told to reduce or complicate doing the things that bring you joy, but reducing your meat consumption and shopping at local producers is something we could all take small steps every year towards doing.
That has nothing to do with the ampersand, it’s just that post titles and bodies in general have different fonts. It’s just easier to notice in the ampersand since it’s so different between the fonts.
But not nearly as many tracking mechanisms as Chrome, because it lacks API keys for some services. By default, it will still send the URL of every page you visit to Google, though. At least that’s my understanding, reading their privacy policy.
But it also doesn’t update itself, doesn’t seem to have a working Mac build (the one on their website doesn’t launch), and doesn’t sync (which I can live without, but end-to-end encrypted sync is nice).
Yeah, this is a contender. No Windows build and no sync are the downsides, but neither is a deal breaker, since I’m only testing with it, and I code on Linux and Mac.
If you’re using Windows, Edge is an option. You already have the Microsoft telemetry watching you regardless of using Edge, so you might as well use it if you need chrome for testing or a specific website.
Wilde Life - small-town mystery, light spooky vibes but mostly feel-good. Relationship focused.
Girls with Slingshots - complete! comedy about a friend group. LGBT+ themes, sex positive. A bit raunchy, if that’s not your bag.
Skin Deep - urban fantasy. Neat worldbuilding, long running.
Broodhollow - another small-town mystery, but more legit creepy. Plot of the murder-hauntings-cults variety.
Manly Guys Doing Manly Things - comedy. premise is a temp agency for brawny fictional characters & villains trying to get normal dayjobs. Takes the piss out of common tropes.
Awkward Zombie - comedy. No plot, just comics about video games & other things the artist is into.
Johnny Wander - 4 comics in a trenchcoat, but they’re all pretty cute. Started as an autobio comic with the occasional original fiction story mixed in, but they’ve all been separated out for easier reading now.
A lot of these are hosted by sites that host other comics, so you can follow that rabbit hole pretty far. Also some artists will link to other comics they like in the about/notes pages, good way to find other stuff.
Tip on counter service, don’t tip on retail purchases. This was a retail purchase. If you had gotten a latte you should’ve tipped a dollar for that, but not on the entire total.
You’re probably not going to hell because hell probably doesn’t exist. However, whether you are cast into the outer darkness, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth, that’s another matter and I suggest truly repenting for your misdeeds… of which this was not one, to be clear.
Back in the '80s, when these conventions were labors of love, there were no charges for autographs, pictures, or talking to guests. They actually appreciated and enjoyed speaking with fans. I have had famous comic artists draw sketches for me (I wish I knew where the Beta Ray Bill sketch by Walt Simonson is!) and spent an hour or more speaking with the guest of honor.
I can’t imagine spending substantial sums to stand in line just to have a few seconds with someone who has been on TV or in a movie.
Even as late as the early 00’s, spouse and I went to see John Delancie. Spouse bought a signed photo of him as Q, but he also came out from behind his desk and put his arm around her so I could take a pic. Maybe because it wasnt very busy, just casual. A number of years later we “tried” to see Will Shatner, but it was crazy busy, surrounded by security. Just didnt seem worth it.
Dang. I just can’t choose. I would like to communicate with so many.
‘Dogs’ is a tempting response, but I feel like I’d be disappointed and a little disturbed by how slavish we’ve made them. Cats… would probably tell you to fuck off and stop bothering them.
Octopodes and whales I think would make for a very interesting conversation. The octopus is, imo, the closest thing we have to an alien on earth. Iirc their intelligence developed on a completely different pathway to mammals; imo if they didn’t die so quickly they’d be as likely to have become dominant as us smart apes.
A conversation with a virus would be very boring imo. They don’t have a mind, would probably just repeat “REPRODUCTION INEVITABLE, RESISTANCE FUTILE” over and over.
Maybe we can have a fact-check community. People could post there if they find fake news or they could request fact-checks of information by others. It should be a community with strict rules on referring to sources, creating valid arguments, etc. and content should only be banned if it does not adhere to these rules.
A bit similar to what happens in scientific research. I will reject a paper if there are issues with its methods. I will not reject it based on its conclusions if the methods are fine. I think this works in academia, why wouldn’t it work with the right moderators here? There are still a lot of people who value truth above all else and in this way, they would have a space here.
