intensely_human, in What are the best e-readers on the market?

I’ve used a kindle paperwhite for maybe a decade. Any time one dies or gets lost I replace it. I’ve bought 3 or 4 now.

I love it. Very happy with this little machine. Haven’t tried Kobo to compare.

BigWheelPowerBrakeSlider, in What do you call this place?

The Powerlines–a place for high schoolers to throw keggers.

demystify, in Do Israeli Politicians' adult children get conscripted just like the average adult Israeli citizen as part of mandatory service?

In theory. In practice, I doubt it.

The Israeli parliament consists of 120 politicians. Their children would need:

  • to not be Haredi, which are exempt from service
  • to be between the ages of 18-21, which is when their mandatory service runs
  • to serve in combat units

Chances are only a few of them answer this criteria (even less considering the extremist portion of this specific government which didn’t serve, and their children likely don’t serve either), and even they are likely not above pulling strings to get them out of danger. Except for that politician you talked about, apparently.

That is absolute bullshit about the Heredi. Its like, ok you can live in this unlrotected/untaxed area and be self-governing. Best of luck, let the Lord ur God fight off your/his enemies 🙄

They are gonna have to form their own army and I suspect they’re way to freaking soft and parasitic to be able to do so unilaterally or even on Easy mode

Edit: do they at least pay taxes or are they basically a completely mooching cancer on Israeli society that just fucks and prays and creates sewage they dont bear the cost of?

Great, not convince the politicians to make that law

My two great loves

helmet91, in What are the best e-readers on the market?

I have a Kobo Aura 2, and I love it. That’s my first ebook reader, and I haven’t had any other one since.

Personally I avoid Amazon because I definitely don’t wanna get tied to them. I’m not sure if this is still true, but when I got my ebook reader, these were my choices:

  • get a non-Amazon device, and I can read anything except books from Amazon
  • get an Amazon device, and I can only read books from Amazon

So it was a no-brainer for me. One of the best purchases I’ve ever made.

You can get ebooks from any source (well, not considering the AI generated crap that Amazon is getting flooded with; if you want that, you need to get a Kindle), and your computer/smartphone will handle it as a standard USB storage device, so you can simply copy over your ebooks.

shinigamiookamiryuu, in What gifts are you getting for your friends and family members?

They’re so far away I probably won’t, sadly.

Honytawk,

You can order them food from a distance.

shinigamiookamiryuu,

Wait, really? How?

felixwhynot,
@felixwhynot@lemmy.world avatar

In lieu of sending gifts, sometimes I donate to charities that remind me of the recipient. For instance, for the bird lover, I donated in their name to Audubon. Etc.

shinigamiookamiryuu,

I do this sometimes. I have to pick carefully though, I’ve come to learn a large number of them aren’t trustworthy.

Sure, CharityNavigator is good for research.

sparky678348, in What are the best e-readers on the market?

You might be shocked how quickly you get used to reading on your phone. A nice epub reader (I recommend a nice app called FB reader) + libgen and you’re golden.

I also have a nice 7-in tablet that I got for reading, one of Samsung’s non-flagships. I use my phone more out of pure convenience, but I have definitely put my hours in on both. Usually I’ll load up a book I’m reading on both and kinda go back and forth.

Grass,

I did this before but couldn’t keep it up. When I got my first OLED phone I was able to do it with inverse colour and 2 notches over minimum brightness, plus blue light toned down. I read Atwood’s maddaddam trilogy like this.

Drusas, in [EXPERIMENTAL] What are your hidden gem medications/drugs/substances and what makes them ideal for your usecase [**Bolded Substance Name (Brand/Street Name)** + New Paragraph folks]

Sumatriptan

Rapidly cures migraines.

cheese_greater,

Whats the dosing regimen, is it daily or as needed?

Drusas,

Best taken as soon as you feel a migraine coming on.

tomi000, (edited ) in [EXPERIMENTAL] What are your hidden gem medications/drugs/substances and what makes them ideal for your usecase [**Bolded Substance Name (Brand/Street Name)** + New Paragraph folks]

Phenibut

Helps relieve anxiety and eases social contact. For me personally its just a mood enhancer and makes listening to music so good. About 500-1500mg is a normal dose, lasts for up to 24h and should not be taken more often than once a week.

Addv4, in Former religious lemmings, what made you quit religion or stop being a believer?

Ex-Christian here, I was in a pretty easy going division of Christianity, main thing was that we didn't believe in hell and were "metaphysical" (hippie way of saying we didn't strictly adhere to the Bible). I would often look after the smaller kids in Sunday school, and one day we put on the veggie tales version of Noah's ark, and I actually watched it while watching the kids, and somewhat considered the idea that if there was a flood, inevitably quite a few children would have been caught up in it and died, which in my mind a kind god would not have even contemplated. The level of cognitive dissonance I experienced kind of made me think about listening to atheistic opinions to double check I wasn't completely off the mark with my beliefs. So I listened to Dawkins, Hitchens, and Carl Sagans arguments then actually sat down and read the Bible. Not gonna say I accepted it overnight, but that is what eventually led me to where I am today as an atheist.
