Kolanaki, in What is the origin of the phrase "to have faith in humanity"?
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

The human project. The collective species. Where we are going as a whole. And having faith that it will take steps toward a better future instead of what is currently going on.

Hazmatastic, in What is the origin of the phrase "to have faith in humanity"?

Answer: Faith in humanity is used to express hope (or lack thereof) in our ability as a species to be good or thrive. If you see something that makes you “lose hope for humanity,” it is usually a cruel or malicious act that makes one question whether we as a species will survive, or at least have a good impact while we’re here. Things that give hope for humanity are usually altruistic acts that make people think “we just might be alright.” If you think humanity is a dumpster fire of shitty people and we are inevitably going to bomb ourselves to extinction, you’ve lost faith in humanity. If you think people are good in their core and, as bad as the bad apples are, we are generally good to each other, if you think that we can build something greater than we are now and are going to be alright, you have faith in humanity. These statements are generally made in hyperbole to express how one is feeling in the moment, and usually isn’t a description of a more permanent state of thinking. At least not colloquially.

As far as origin, no clue.

CausticFlames, in What's the best approach/pathway to learning iOS development?

Recently for a project of mine between me and a couple of friends, we needed to make an iOS app having never made one before. Our solution since we didn’t have reliable access to Xcode, which you need to be able to get it onto an iPhone, was to just make an Android application in Flutter. Since it’s cross-platform we used the Android simulator to test things, and then compiled it for iOS after the fact.

All this to say you could honestly start there with flutter and not bother too much with native swift if you dont own a Mac or Macbook. If you DO own a Mac, I’d simply start with reading the swift documentation ;)

Buy citizenship out of the US and build a better country abroad with your foreign investment. Not much to do with the way things are going, but you can make Ireland or Monténégro a better place.

MuhammadJesusGaySex, in What's the consensus on swearing here

For me personally, I got into a lot of drawn out arguments on Reddit. I said some LGBTQ performers doing a performance that involved a cross was “child friendly” and for 8 months I still got messages from pearl clutching conservatives calling me a pe**. Here, I try to limit my hot takes to 24 hours of engagement, and I try to be more respectful.

Also, I’d like to think that there is a better class of people here than on Reddit. So, I act accordingly. I like my new home. It’s not totally full of assholes yet, and I don’t fancy creating any.

www.startpage.com

Owned now by a marketing company. I’ve been using it for many years and never had my results noticeable affect my advertising incoming.

It’s a proxy for Google which is why I use it. I have really started to use ChatGPT in anger yet as the trivial don’t need it.

I’m not connected to them in any way.

shinigamiookamiryuu, in What search engine do you recommend that isn't Google or Bing?

I used to be a part of the DuckDuckGo hype train until I found out they did actually track data (not an issue to me personally, but it betrayed their key marketing point), as used to be demonstrable if you had a slow internet and hovered your cursor over a link (it would show the tracking data loading). It was the one thing separating them from Ecosia, and I decided to join the Ecosia hype train, even if their own promises are themselves highly exaggerated. Every effort to do what Ecosia promises, even failed efforts, are appreciable.

  • LemmyKnowsBest,

You posted this same comment twice so you can delete this one because the other clone comment received upvotes and this one didn’t.

I’d call them all Snoopy considering the very legitimate privacy concerns.
