FireTower, in What aspects are important for non-centralized communities?
@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

One aspect I think Lemmy lacks is the ability for some contained discussion. To much leads to feed back loops but not enough discourages niche communities.

This is something Reddit’s scale does well. Reddit communities will have most of their posts never make it to the 5th page of All. There will still be break out posts but most likely the only people reading your post are those in your community.

With the current size of most niche lemmy communities you are posting to thise in your community as much as you’re posting to who ever is viewing All by new.

Not a long or super replayable game like some of these answers but Jusant is super chill.

Acters, in What kind of wearable device do you want? Assuming it will work and feel like you imagine it would

So you want a phone strapped to your wrist that can be oriented vertically or horzontally? Some samsung devices sport styluses, namely the ultra phone, that you can use instead of your fingers as it can be hard or impossible to do with gloves on. The unfortunate downside to this is that your arm would get tired after long use, and you are more dependent on headphones/earbuds or speakerphone for calls. A phone attached to your arm could be clumsy for quick actions and needs your hands to be free to use, but you live with what you have.

Maybe instead, a mechanical arm that attaches to your shoulders will be more versatile as you can still do one-handed, and your arm will not get tired. Could maybe include a stabilizer in the design for great video recording capabilities.

otter,

That’s true, I already get annoyed with my watch sometimes

Having a mechanical arm would be pretty cool actually, and it already exists. It wouldn’t work for all cases, but maybe some times

Acters,

The phone or display attached to your arm /wrist will not work for all cases either, so we are just looking for enhancements to those who can take advantage of it. The rest will need either more specialized solutions or don’t need it.

pan_troglodytes, in What game do you play to just chill?

civ 5 - random everything & just do whatever.

stevedidWHAT, (edited ) in What game do you play to just chill?
@stevedidWHAT@lemmy.world avatar

Stacklands, inscription, forza.

Stacklands was surprisingly addicting

Inscription was fun and challenging but not too crazy if you get creative ;)

Forza - I mean really any game where I can drive around. Fun to try to hit some corners sharp or do some tricks in gta.

I can see it through Summit on Android. No comments or votes visible.

intensely_human, in Would you choose invisibility or teleportation?

I’d pick invisibility if it came with some mechanism to keep people from running into me.

I attract way too much attention in public and I’d like to be able to go out and walk around without all the attention.

Fades, in Can anyone else see this post?

I can see the post, yes. 0 comments tho

Yep… that is what bugged me…

solrize, in Is there a way to find a local server with reliable uptime?

Lemmy.world is looking for unpaid ops help. Are you volunteering?

lemmy.world/post/8054956

laverabe,

why would i be volunteering? I’m having lag problems with the server because of it’s geographic location in the Netherlands, what does that have to do with volunteering as a mod? lol

solrize,

The volunteer opening I linked is for a junior ops engineer. There is a separate opening for a mod. The ops engineer position is to help keep the servers running. If you want a server to stay reliable, you need people doing that.

laverabe,

ah. But at the same time it would be good if Lemmy was not as centralized on a single server. Lemmy.world is most of Lemmy at the moment, and when it goes down almost every other server is a snapshot frozen in time.

I think it would be good if there were better tools to find closer servers (like geographically <1000km ) and to spread the fediverse out a bit.

solrize,

Part of the ops engineering effort (if the person is up to it) could be improving the software for higher reliability. The improvements could then be used on other instances as well.

nottheengineer, in Is there a way to find a local server with reliable uptime?

lemmy.sdf.org is rock solid. I have an account there for when feddit.de has issues.

laverabe,

lol, it’s actually down right now. web.archive.org/web/…/lemmy.sdf.org.html

Says it’s been down for a week

AceSLS,

They updated to 19.0-rc5 some days ago. Might have been accidentally and now it messed up their database or something, idk

Before that I didn’t have a single moment where I couldn’t browse Lemmy via their instance

laverabe,

how do you find out where they are geographically located? I see they’re in the US from the fediverse.observer list but it doesn’t explain what state they’re in. The server could still be 3000 miles away depending on what state it is.

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

Does that matter?

Latency between the coasts is like 50ms. You’re probably not going to notice that.

eightpix, in What kind of wearable device do you want? Assuming it will work and feel like you imagine it would

I’d like to know if there is a sci-fi source for this; I’ve wanted — what I call — infinifabric for a long time. Basically a cross between:

  • the microbots in Big Hero 6,
  • the symbiote from Spider-Man (sans sentience), and
  • programmable matter from Star Trek: Discovery

One fabric layer that can reshape itself into any and every conceivable article of clothing. Perfectly regulates body temperature, water loss, and environmental challenges.

From Altered Carbon: an Oni. Built-in telecommunications. Seems way closer to fruition than DHF stacks. Though, is the stack worn so much as is part of oneself? In universe, it seems that the stack IS the person.

From Dune, Foundation, and that one episode of Star Trek: TNG: a personal shield.

This topic makes me wonder if prosthetic devices count as “wearables”, per se, or not. If anyone out there is in the know — you or someone you’re close to have (has)/wear(s) a prosthesis — please let me know.

jacktherippah, in What kind of wearable device do you want? Assuming it will work and feel like you imagine it would

Uhhh…hmmm…Iron Man’s arc reactor suit from Avengers Endgame.

otter,

Well, it meets the requirements so here you are :)

Also I think this one wins, since it can become any of the other ones

ohlaph, in Would you choose invisibility or teleportation?

Teleportation. Hands down

MxM111, in Would you choose invisibility or teleportation?
@MxM111@kbin.social avatar

Clearly teleportation, because when you are invisible, you cannot see - your body let photons through.
