Fades, in At what point is violence on a large scale justified?

one thing is for sure; it is NEVER justified to attack and use unarmed unengaged civilians to further narratives and motivations. It only strengthens the occupiers stance to ignore military targets for soft ones instead. The ends NEVER justify the means, PERIOD.

Reminds me of the TNG episode The High Ground, there is always a way forward that doesn’t include mass casualties, it’s just humans are too fucking shit to try.

electric_nan,

It’s never justified, but it also feels gross to join this chorus of condemnation against Hamas, when it’s so much louder and widespread than any condemnation of official Israeli policies which have had the same or worse material effect for decades.

trolololol,

I wanna see you try dialoguing with Putin. Do you think everyone is shy and nobody ever tried??

JustZ, (edited ) in Would you say enthusiast grade or business grade products are better quality?

Business model or commercial model?

Business computing such as word processing and spreadsheets, database software, requires very little processing power. So you’re making an apples to oranges comparison.

For apples to apples, check the specs on pro stuff for yourself: www.amd.com/en/graphics/workstations

The pro stuff is essentially double the processing power, and double the price. The difference is in process threading and number of cores. Rendering huge video and CAD projects, for example, would take forever on a gaming rig, because that kind of rendering software is optimized for threading, game processes are not usually optimized or not as optimized. For example, there are some games that will only use one core of even a dual core processor.

I’m sure someone that knows much more about this stuff will correct any errors in terminology. Anyway, that’s my take on the question.

Initially I thought, well, what graphics processors do they have inside commercial gaming systems, such as a high-end training, flight simulator, or racing simulator. They use the RTX 30 and 40 series.

Generally, hobbyist and consumer grade products are not meant to be used 40 hours a week, such as commercial products are. It’s easy to see huge differences in these sort of products on things like lawn mowers, refrigeration. Even in televisions. Your television in your home is likely not meant to operate 365 days a year like the ones you find in a hotel lobby or airport. They just have higher quality components and engineering, designed to withstand long-term, high volume use. They use better glue.

Those workstation GPUs are also usually not very good for gaming, for the same reasons. Optimized for the professional use case and not the enthusiast one.

LaunchesKayaks, in What do you use to backup all your photos and documents, cloud or external drive or both?
@LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world avatar

I use Google drive to backup my pics and memes because I don’t have enough to warrant getting anything bigger. I have the $2/month Google One subscription because the free one was barely too small. I can’t get rid of memes tho.

neptune, in At what point is violence on a large scale justified?

Hmmm I’m going to re-watch Andor and then read some books about the American Revolution and get back with you.

neptune, in Who's going to pay for the reconstruction of Gaza

The whole point is to take the land. So you are not quite asking the right question. Israel presumably will. So that it can occupy the land.

iByteABit, in How is your part of the world doing?

I’m from Greece.

30 years ago people were still living the dream which was all a house of cards called loans. Then the market crisis happened and we got fucked unable to get new ones and pay off the old ones.

After that, we kept getting blackmailed by the Eurozone and the IMF so that we would get the loans we needed to fix our country, but under harsh conditions that basically sustain our poverty instead of fixing it in any way. We signed away the people’s livelihoods so that we could be Europe’s economic lab rat and slave, all to their benefit.

Our current government is as liberal capitalist as it gets, privatizing everything and making life crap for the poor (who are becoming more and more as time passes). Fascism is also on the rise, following the theme of Europe and the US.

The government owns almost all the media and most other parties in the parliament are also aligned with the ruling one. Climate change is beggining to hit hard, every time revealing the cheap infrastructure and postponed plans by contractors.

Instead of hiring more firemen, our government continues to allocate way too much money on cops, riot control, and the media it bribes.

Maybe the EU’s fucking around ends up with a communist revolution, I bet they won’t be too happy about it then.

Spiralvortexisalie, in What's the most unique role model you've heard that was a green flag?

Hank Hill, I never met someone who liked him and stood for anything asinine.

Treczoks, in Who's going to pay for the reconstruction of Gaza

Wrong question. The right question is: Who’s going to make a fortune on the reconstruction of Gaza?

Not_Alec_Baldwin,

I know you’re making more of a cynical joke, but no contractors are gonna be willing to go into Gaza to rebuild under Hamas.

Some construction supplies wholesaler might make a killing, though.

kSPvhmTOlwvMd7Y7E,

Lol Israël providing water to Gaza? => “look how they make profit from Gaza!” Israël shutting water down? => “look what they doing, starving and torturing the civilians!”

Can’t win this

Treczoks,

That was not what I was talking about. If anything will ever be built there, it will be a BIG job. And someone will make a shitload of money with that, regardless if they are from Gaza, Israel, or elsewhere. A beefy chunk of money coming from private donations, international support pledges or other states’ foreign help will end up in the (offshore) bank accounts of a few corrupt people.

kSPvhmTOlwvMd7Y7E,

Understandable, have a great day

Anti_Weeb_Penguin, in How is your part of the world doing?

Argentina.

Kinda poor and heavily indebted but at least it’s far away from any war zone, and much much better than it was 40 years ago.

Hawke, in What's a button you hate tapping or clicking accidentally?

The mute icon on a browser tab. Chancrs of wanting to select the tab: 80%, close the tab, 20%, mute 0%. If I want to do that I’ll right-click and choose from the menu.

LongPigFlavor, in How is your part of the world doing?

Florida, US. We’re facing multiple crises at once; an affordability crisis, an environmental crisis, and a political crisis. Homeowners insurance rates are going up with many companies leaving the state. Car insurance rates are increasing. Rent prices, housing prices, and mortgage rates are increasing. Our state is facing multiple environmental issues such as deforestation, pollution, and invasive species. Climate change will greatly impact our state, but our governor thinks it’s woke.

HurlingDurling,

There was a tornado in Florida 2 days ago right?

LongPigFlavor,
OceanSoap, in How is your part of the world doing?

I’m in AZ, USA, and I like it. Everyone outside of AZ is freaking out about the weather, but I enjoy it. I’m much more comfortable in the dry heat than I am in 75°f with humidity.

Anyway, I like that we’re a pro-abortion state and a pro-gun state. I like that there’s a lot of thought diversity here and less anger in general.

I feel good here

ace_garp, in Can anyone recommend terrible horror films?
@ace_garp@lemmy.world avatar

Horrors of Spider Island (1960)

B&W, german production, bad dubbing, 10 girls 1 guy, Stanley Kubrick’s cinematographer, uranium, exploitation flick, plane crash, plenty of WTF, island, oh and some spiders.

Step into bizzaro world.

A few versions on archive.org. Apparently the restored one includes the original German adult content that was cut for the 1962 rerelease.

justlookingfordragon, in What's the most unique role model you've heard that was a green flag?
@justlookingfordragon@lemmy.world avatar

Morticia and Gomez Addams.

They’re unapologetically weird, fiercely in love with each other, they support and love their children unconditionally, they’re brutally honest with each other, including openly showing affection without giving a damn about what others may think of them. They’re one of the best (fictional) examples of caring parents and lovers, and I will die on that hill.

Everythingispenguins,

I have this vague memory of an interview where this was being talked about and how showing them as kind, loving people with real emotions was somewhat controversial. If anyone knows what I am talking about please chime in.

justlookingfordragon,
@justlookingfordragon@lemmy.world avatar

Maybe you mean this? www.youtube.com/watch?v=i78_re3fq5U ;)

A_Random_Idiot,

Anjelica Houston and Raul Julia.

There will never be a more iconic Morticia and Gomez.

They are my absolute relationship goal. I want to find a partner that embraces my weird and loves it whole hearted and unashamedly, and I theirs.

Sadly, as I get older, I realize its never gonna happen.
