MashedTech, in Is Sync for Android worth the cost?

I paid for no ads and that’s it. I don’t need sync ultra, it’s cheap, but I don’t need it. Ads didn’t bother me, but I had paid before for the reddit app, and the Lemmy one is also great, so I wanted to support the developer.

catonwheels, in Do You Have a Fire Extinguisher in Your Home and is it Still Pressurized?

Absolutely it is one of these products that you probably never need. But when you do you are so happy you had it standing around.

I do routine inspections once a year when I do my fire alarm testing so every time I switch to daylight saving time.

chatokun,

Just caused an oil fire last week and fortunately it was working. I’ve since replaced also.

Not exactly a new one, but I listened to S-town with great enjoyment. It's a little story about an alleged murder, a truly original American man, and rural Alabama. I was never bored, and I certainly learned something. And you get to hear an amazing Alabama accent.

pslightlypsycho47,

Excellent miniseries! Know of other similar podcasts?

cheese_greater, (edited )

I wanna reply with my town I grew up in with a letter-hyphen combo but I’d dox myself at some point in time otherwise 😜

And u all neva gonna get that, neva gonna get that, tra-la-la-la-LA!

notaviking, in What's a great podcast you'd like to share?

Last podcast on the left, their research is great but they lean heavily into their comedy to really make the story entertaining.

Concave1142,

I used to listen to them all the time.before the move to Spotify. Once they came out from behind Spotify and I could get them in my preferred app, I just couldn’t get back in the grove of listening to them. It seemed like for every 5 of their releases, I would find one interesting.

Don’t let this stop anyone else from listening to them as they research the shit out of their topics. Their Jim Jones episodes were more informative than any other description I have ever heard.

hushable,

It seemed like for every 5 of their releases, I would find one interesting.

You can tell the difference between the episodes researched by them and their research team. I still listen to them from time to time, their recent series on the Survival on the Andes is harrowing, one of their best episodes in recent times.

Milk_Sheikh, in Do You Have a Fire Extinguisher in Your Home and is it Still Pressurized?

Piggybacking on this PSA to remind everyone;

  • Attack the base of the fire, where the fuel source is. You need to break the fire triangle to stop the reaction, and drowning out oxygen is the easiest way.
  • Each rated pound of fire extinguisher yields approximately one second of use. They go quickly when you’re fighting any fire, and even small fires fight back. 5lb is the minimum imo, look at any commercial setting where OSHA applies and it’s big 10-20lb tanks generally.
  • Trainers advise to blow the whole extinguisher even if flames aren’t visible to prevent auto-ignition.
  • You really, really want a hose on any extinguisher. Invert the extinguisher to get under a car/cabinet/low obstacle and the extinguisher is useless as the pressurized gas escapes, leaving behind the powder/foam/water that actually stops fire.
BoxOfFeet, in Do You Have a Fire Extinguisher in Your Home and is it Still Pressurized?

Yeah, three. One in the kitchen, one at the bottom of my basement stairs, and one in my laundry room.

Crime in Sports and Small Town Murder, same hosts and very funny. You don’t need to know about sports (more about the crime)

Codilingus, in What's the best way to pay an online merchant using Crypto for someone who has never bought/used it before?

Do they accept Litecoin? If buying something “shady,” then Monero. Then it’s just searching for an exchange with/out a wallet that charges a fee % that you find acceptable.

SickDisturbence, in Do You Have a Fire Extinguisher in Your Home and is it Still Pressurized?

As a gift to my friends who were going to be first time parents, I bought them a pack and play, a first aid kit, and a fire extinguisher. They laughed at my fire extinguisher gift and told their other friends who also laughed.

FireTower, (edited )
@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

Laugh all they want burning alive is a shit way to go. And you might have saved them from that fate.

Empricorn,

Just to be pedantic, I think most people who die in building fires perish due to smoke inhalation. Still bad though, and almost completely preventable!

Uranium_Green,

Awh, that’s kind of crappy. I’m hoping they just took it as a gag gift; be prepared for anything, a bit like Jack Jack in The Incredibles.

I hope theynever have to use it, but I hope they do learn how important it is.

Same for cleaning dryer lint; before I was born the entire family who lived across the road from my mum perished in a house fire from dryer lint catching.

Also add Carbon monoxide detectors to that list of devices you never want to need, but should never be without

wrekone,

Dryer lint fires are so strange to me. Cleaning out the lint trap takes less than 5 seconds, and I do it with every load. I pulled the dryer hose off last weekend to clean it, and it was spotless, presumably because I clean the lint from the trap.

For anyone looking for a good episode to start with, The Rube is a certified classic.

PrincessLeiasCat,

I’m listening to that now and had to turn it off at work because I was laughing so hard.

Got any more great Dollop recs I might have missed? I’m a more recent convert - past few years or so, so anything before then :)

True stories from the dark side of the Internet

TehBamski,

I highly recommend Darknet Diaries.

I enjoy all of the episodes in one way or another. But here are a few of my recommendations.

Ep 36: Jeremy from Marketing - “A company hires a penetration tester to pose as a new hire, Jeremy from Marketing, to see how much he can hack into in his first week on the job. It doesn’t go as planned.”

Ep 14: - “In 2013 a hospital was accused of conducting a medical kidnapping against a young girl named Justina. This enraged many people across the country, including members of Anonymous. A DDOS attack was waged against the hospital.”

Ep 24: Operation Bayonet - "Darknet markets are online black markets. They are highly illegal, and dangerous to run. Hear exactly how dangerous it was for Alphabay and Hansa dark markets.

Ep 29: Stuxnet - “Stuxnet was the most sophisticated virus ever discovered. It’s target was a nuclear enrichment facility in Iran. This virus was successfully able to destroy numerous centrifuges. Hear who did it and why.”

assa123,
@assa123@lemmy.world avatar

I love Darknet Diaries. I want to recommend one in the same genre, Modem Mischief.

hushable,

Xbox underground is great story too.

I had a friend working at Microsoft in the Xbox division during that time who recommended me that podcast.

Couldbealeotard,
@Couldbealeotard@lemmy.world avatar

The Stuxnet episode was really good. Shows how a virus can be properly weaponised.

berlincruising,

Oooo Jeremy from marketing was very fun, gonna keep on listening! Thank you!

Why are we putting decentralized money on a centralized platform that has no way of insuring the money if it gets stolen…

xkforce,

If your main concern is theft, a decentralized currency is not for you.
