Tehhund, in Do you have a heat pump? Is it noisy?

We just got 2 new Carrier Infinity 24 heat pumps and I don’t think I’ve ever heard them running (except for the fan pushing air through the ducts, but that’s part of a traditional furnace too). It’s an expensive system that is advertised as being particularly quiet, and I think they deliver - I haven’t noticed any change in noise levels. One of them had an issue for a while so we ran the backup gas furnace instead, and I couldn’t tell the difference between the one that was using the heat pump and the one that was using gas.

So it’s possible to get a quiet heat pump, depending on the model.

Bluefruit, in How do you strike a balance between being present in the moment and planning for the future?

I like to plan for the future a lot. It helps motivate me to get stuff done and keep working for what i want.

But i also just take moments to appreciate what i already have. One of my favorite things to do is smell the air outside. Each season has a different smell to it and idk what it is but when i stop to smell that, life is good.

Know what you want and plan for it but dont stress out too much. It defeats the purpose of planing if its stressing you out. And even if you do plan, life will throw you curveballs. I like the phrase lifes a marathon, not a sprint a lot because i often feel like i HAVE to be doing more when i dont.

I’m only 26 so its not like ive had a lifetime of experience or anything. I got lots of time to do what i want. I’ll keep working hard to do what i swt out to but ill take time to enjoy what i love. I’ll keep making music, messing around with computers and ill still make plans even if i dont quite get there.

BradPittIsGod, in What are some of your cheap eats hacks?

Meth, i save money food for more than a week

lingh0e,

I mean, you’re not wrong. Between not eating and having zero compulsion to drink, I saved a ton of money when I was a functional tweaker. Quitting meth turned me into a fat alcoholic.

CaptainHowdy, in What are some small things we should change about the human body?

I’m pretty sure the major things that need to change are in the brain. Predeliction for violence and hate, addiction to controversy and toxins, and whatever makes people stupid enough to support facists.

RizzRustbolt,

That would require a significant remodeling of the neo-cortex. Pattern seeking got us out of the stone ages, but it is killing us in the modern era.

RBWells, (edited ) in What's involved in your budgeting method?

Husband has irregular income. Like you I do a spreadsheet with the dollars all allocated for my income plus what he tells me he expects on average.

Then each month I compare to actual results, and use that information to get a better estimate for the next year.

The black hole is credit card repayment because it was spent on something but goes in as debt repayment but we are working on that.

ETA: also do forecasting bank balance by day in months when things are tight. We do have savings but most of it in retirement accounts.

RBWells, in Do you have a heat pump? Is it noisy?

We have used heat pump for A/C and heat in Florida for, well, I don’t know how long but the house I bought in the early 90s had one, and it was old enough we had to replace it, and the replacement lasted 20 years, so it’s not a new technology.

Yes they make noise, especially when starting up, but as someone else noted, your windows are closed when you run it, it’s not that loud. Not as loud as window units were.

CADmonkey, in When/how do you think capitalism will be defeated?

When we are filling the vent shafts for the last billionaire bunker with dirt and rocks.

Typically when your AC/heat pump are running your windows are closed.

A lot of great ideas here, but also sinus are such a terrible design. Please no more sinuses.

AshKetchup, in What is a rainy day meal you enjoy?

Portugese Bean Soup.

Ham Hocks Kidney Beans Portugese Sausage ( or any type of sausage really) Carrots Cabbage Diced Tomatoes / Tomato Sauce

Boil the ham hocks for about an hour then combine all ingredients Boil them all together for a couple of hours

Takes a bit to prep but it’s delicious!

AshKetchup, in What's involved in your budgeting method?

At the very basic level, I predict how much money i expect to make in a month. Then subtract all bills and expenses that will definitely occur in the month. The difference is what i have to play with. Most times that extra goes into getting more groceries. Sometimes I can put that extra into my emergency savings which gets drained out more often than i’d like.

misophist, (edited ) in Why was Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan so bad for the American people?

War on drugs.

War on AIDS.

War on middle class.

War on unbiased news.

At my mom’s place — air-source heat pump, double-paned windows — I can’t hear the thing at all from inside the house, and can only hear it if I go on the side of the house where it’s operating, which doesn’t get a lot of foot traffic. You can hear the fan there.

Generally, I haven’t heard people complaining about it in the US. I have seen some people talk about it recently in the UK, which is in the middle of a push to transition to them, and I’m wondering if that’s because townhouses are more-common there, with houses packed closely together.

I understand that you can get noise-reducing enclosures:

There are also water-source heat pumps. I don’t know how the noise differs, but I’d bet that it’s quieter, because you’re moving water through a pipe rather than a lot of air. However, their installation cost is considerably higher (though their energy efficiency is also higher).

JadenSmith, in What are some small things we should change about the human body?

No age related ball sag.

AbsoluteChicagoDog,

You never forget the first time you sit on your balls

Cosmocrat,

I did that while getting on my bike once, very pain.
