SharkEatingBreakfast, in Lemmings in school, what are they teaching about drug addiction, fentanyl, and opiods?
@SharkEatingBreakfast@sopuli.xyz avatar

I just asked my 12-year old, and he says he’s learning about this in his health class right now.

Fentanyl: “Only a very small amount will kill you. They are often laced in street drugs and stuff bought from the internet.”

Opioids: “They’re like painkillers and numb your senses and thoughts. They can make your slower and weird.” (that’s all he was told)

Nothing on the other stuff yet.

He’s said that his teacher had a relative die from fentanyl. She’s very passionate about drug education, from what he says, and notes that she hasn’t ever said that “all drugs are bad” or anything like that.

She’s also apparently brought in nurses and doctors to help with explanations and information about certain drugs. No cops, apparently, which *thank thar. Hopefully it stays that way.

So far, I’m very happy with the kind of drug education he’s getting. I supplement it with more in-depth, one-on-one conversations, as well. Not all drugs are evil, and I let him know that.

ozmotear, in Which of the U.S. national parks in this image do you think is the most worth visiting? There are three exceptions.

Shenandoah and the Great Smokey mountains.

Drive the blue ridge parkway. it’s about 4 days with plenty of great sights off the side of the road.

This! It’s beautiful in late summer, early fall. Lots of great easy and moderate hiking. Hit up Front Royal, VA for some food and booze.

Definitely this. Great areas.

AceFuzzLord, in Ancient wisdom often sounds like common sense now that it is commomly taught. What is some ancient wisdom that we no longer teach because it was wrong?

I don’t know if anyone else has said it, but the belief that human illness and all that were caused by an imbalance of four bodily humors: black bile, yellow bile, blood, and phlegm. It’s an old belief where the earliest I found it being practiced was around 400 B.C.

Spanish guitar.

    The sitar originates from the Indian subcontinent my dude, not Iberia.

    RBWells, in I am to celebrate new years eve alone. How can I celebrate solo?

    Whatever you want! When I have free time alone (a scarce commodity) I like to read, maybe have one drink, listen to music.

    If it’s not by choice and you don’t want to be alone, go out and have coffee or a drink, watch people.

    If you are trying to make it meaningful, do a ritual. Like write down what you want to get rid of, what doesn’t serve you (anxiety, whatever troubles you) and burn it, let it go. A time that’s unusual is a good time to make changes that you want, to interrupt habits.

    AbsoluteChicagoDog, in Mayo, mustard or ketchup?

    Mustard obviously. It’s objectively the least disgusting and has the most use cases.

    klemptor, in What's your favorite instrument that really gets through to you?

    The sitar!

    Rubisco, in Which of the U.S. national parks in this image do you think is the most worth visiting? There are three exceptions.

    Gateway Arch? I think you meant to say City Museum.

    FlyingSquid,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    City Museum is awesome, but we’ve been there twice.

    Rubisco,

    Yeah it is! And in that case, my recommendation is Shenandoah. Tube down to Harper’s Ferry and climb Maryland heights. Find one of those trails in the hills that follows a stream that slides down long smooth rocks into cool, clear pools.

    Grass, in what, in your opinion, drives the start time of factory and manufacturing jobs to 5am?

    I did 10 hour shifts 1 hour or 1 hour banked for a few years from 4am. The latest start time to avoid being stuck behind a 4 day long train and get home before traffic hits standstill for hours that worked for everyone that needed to be on site for the same shifts. Probably something similar I’d say because while the shifts were different in later jobs many featured seasonal meetings to discuss adjusting the shift times for the same reasons.

    @ace_garp@lemmy.world avatar

    That a vomitorium is a room where Romans would go to vomit up their food and drink so they could gorge themselves some more.

    Not saying that this act never occurred, mind you.

    A vomitorium is a architectural feature that allows large numbers of people to disperse from a tunnel under the seats of a stadium.

    Feathercrown,

    This isn’t ancient wisdom. In fact, your debunking uses wisdom that’s more ancient. It is true though.

    RandomVideos, in Lemmings in school, what are they teaching about drug addiction, fentanyl, and opiods?

    We were supposed to talk about drugs for 2 years, but instead talked about bullying

    We got a school project about drugs a couple years ago, but it was only one option out of a list of subjects for the project(i think, i dont remember exactly)

    The Ether/Aether

    That there is an invisible structure all around us that allows gravity, light and electricity to move through it. Now debunked or replaced.

    Trepanning to release evil spirits.

    Drill a hole in your head as a cureall for any mental behaviour abnormalities. Still practised as an emergency surgery, only to release life-threatening blood and pressure buildup inside the cranial cavity.

    Blowing smoke up your ass

    Gut pain? Almost drowned? Time to blow some tobacco smoke up your bum. Discontinued.

    Feathercrown,

    Interestingly, we’ve kind of looped all the way around. We describe the particles of the universe with omnipresent fields, which isn’t really the same idea as aether but has some neat similarities.

    mea_rah,

    Fun fact: This is also how Ethernet (wired network connection) got its name. Ether was already dismissed as a theory, but “omnipresent, completely-passive medium for the propagation of electromagnetic waves” was a good description of hardware layer that can transfer data in a way that’s abstracting all the signal handling complexity for higher layers.

    So in a way I’m actually sending this comment via Ethernet.

    NucleusAdumbens,

    Huh, now I wish wifi was just called the ether

    tocopherol,

    Lets make the change now, all wireless data, ‘wifi’, the cloud, it all comes from the ether.

    shaman1093, in How to stop eating junk food?

    Like others have said one of the easiest things to do is simply don’t buy the junk.

    Personally I found that the real game changer is finding a healthy snacking alternative. For me this is almonds and dried apricots. They’re still quite a ‘dense’ energy snack but it scratches the sweet tooth itch and is much more filling. Plus you get the added protein, fats & micro nutrients that you would usually miss in processed items.

    Try out some different alternatives (my wife loves to snack on dates and Greek yoghurt for example) and try mainly just to focus on finding something you enjoy so you can swap the habit.

    Good luck!

    SoupBrick, in I am to celebrate new years eve alone. How can I celebrate solo?
    tabularasa,

    Yes, this.

    Wiz,

    That’s suicide by pickles

    Nemo, in Which of the U.S. national parks in this image do you think is the most worth visiting? There are three exceptions.

    I’ve only been to Indiana Dunes and Voyageurs, but they’re both nice enough. Voyageurs is like, bring a canoe and camping supplies, though, not necessary a day trip.

    Consider some state parks! Turkey Run in Indiana is gorgeous, and Pipestone State Park in Minnesota is beautiful, historical, and unique.

    FlyingSquid, (edited )
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    We’re pretty close to Turkey Run and we always tell people to please go to Turkey Run and do not go to that horrible Shades State Park which is definitely not nicer in pretty much every way imaginable and will have an unpleasant lack of a giant line of people going down the trails.

    Nemo,

    Haha fair. I really liked Turkey Run when I went there, is all.

    But seriously, check out Pipestone.
