_haha_oh_wow_, in Mechanics, does my car's spare tire age out?
@_haha_oh_wow_@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yes, it needs to be replaced at this point. A spare will last a little longer than regular tire as long as it’s protected from the sun, but after 10 years, it’s time to replace it.

Everythingispenguins, in Mechanics, does my car's spare tire age out?

Yes. Though not as fast as a tire out in the sun. Tires in the sun will suffer UV damage as a primary form of degradation (obviously mechanical were too if in use). Spairs don’t see the sun so not a problem, but they do oxidize. Ozone will attack the rubber in the tire and cause it to go brittle. that is what causes all the tiny cracking you see on old tires. Generally it is recommended to replace any tire over ten years regardless of use. Interestingly this applies to brand new tires that have been sitting in a warehouse. It is worth learning how to read a tire date code so you can check the tire age. This helps with buying used cars, making sure a tire company didn’t sell you NOS tires, and just general safety.

For you I would just swap it out next time you buy tires. If it is a full sized spare then just save the best of the tires you are replacing as the spare. Save you buying a whole new tire that you will probably never use.

An LG C1300. I carried that thing for several years. Never had to replace the battery and it would still go 3 days on a charge when I finally switched to an iPhone 3

faintwhenfree, in Mechanics, does my car's spare tire age out?

Yes, a good mechanic cycles the tires every service, and recommends switching all 5 before end of life. I’ve had better luck though convincing my clients to start changing tires one tire at a time starting 1.5 years before end of life at every service. Since a lot of clients don’t like shelling money for all 5 at the same time.

It’s been 9 years since I’ve been a mechanic, so take my advice for what you will.

CheeseChief,

What if its a doughnut spare?

tacosanonymous,

Then you still have to replace it. You just won’t put it in the rotation.

Brkdncr,

I can understand replacing 1 axle at a time if the tires aren’t cross rotated, but one new tire and one old tire on the rear axle will lead to some odd fishtailing under emergency braking…

sanitetah, in Mechanics, does my car's spare tire age out?

Yes.

CADmonkey, in What was the last dumb phone you had before your first smartphone?

I can’t for the life of me remember what it was called, or who made it. It was a phone with a full keyboard, and instead of sliding the keyboard out it opened like a little laptop. When it was closed, it was a shiny silver blank rectangle with a display that would shine through when a call was made or when someone called me.

There were so many cool unique phones before Basic Rectangle With Button took over.

My buddy works outside like this. He’s got an electric coat with a built in heating element, with a rechargable battery. He loves it.

Shihab, in Do you prefer to wear a smartwatch or a regular watch?

Regular. I hate to charge things

Layers are key for comfort!
That’s why I always wear an onion on my belt.

Have you tried wearing an ogre? They also have layers

Lemminary, (edited )

Cakes also have layers and everybody loves cakes. Wear a cake.

LegionEris, in How would you explain Lemmy/Kbin to a Reddit person or to a social media person?

It’s a federated reddit alternative. The most I’ve ever had to elaborate is to clarify that “federated” basically means “decentralized.” I’ve never tried to explain it to someone who can’t figure it out from that.

altima_neo,
@altima_neo@lemmy.zip avatar

The federated part is what confused me the most when I was looking into making the switch.

The ideology behind it is simple, but the term “federated” made it sound like some government thing.

Ejh3k, in Those of you who work 8+ hours outside in the cold regularly, how do you dress for the job?

I prefer natural fibers because I think they breathe better and keep me better regulated. And as someone that works outside year round in the Midwest, layers are what work. I have found that keeping my chest the warmest, it helps keep the rest of me warm as well.

Just don’t sweat, or if you do, be down to the lowest layer possible. And when you go in, get down to the lowest layer to air out the top layers and to help regulate your body heat.

cheese_greater, in Those of you who work 8+ hours outside in the cold regularly, how do you dress for the job?

How do folks deal with needing to use their fingers for fine motor tasks outside in the cold mitigate the potential damage to nerves and shit?

Layers

Nothing is skin tight

Any exposed skin is going to be a problem

I drive a forklift so how ever cold it is outside I get an additional 8mph of wind-chill

So today is really going to suck as there’s 15mph winds coming in, so in one direction I’m getting 23 mph worth of wind-chill and the other I’m getting 7

Edit: Also overlapping seams are pretty important as gaps can let air flow in when in motion

GiddyGap, in What was the last dumb phone you had before your first smartphone?

Nokia 8210. It was small and awesome. It was before small became lame.
