I’m afraid it’s the same algorithm I use to answer the question whether I need a receipt.

Godnroc, in What are your criteria for upvoting/downvoting?

If I like it, I upvote. If I dislike it, I downvote. If I have no strong feelings, I do nothing. If I commented and it got a lot of upvotes, I return the favor and upvote the post and any decent comments.

I tend to agree about the down cote it if you disagree with it. I tend to just leave the thread or try not to comment to avoid silly online arguments.

However, if I read something posted that is obviously misleading or someone is just outright lying, then downvote away!

simple, (edited ) in What are your criteria for upvoting/downvoting?

Upvoting: I like this post or it adds to the discussion/community (I want to see more of this)

Downvoting: This is spam, off topic, etc. or the poster is being an arse (in general, I want to see less of this)

Simple as.

Up: Time was worth reading

Down: Time wasted reading (I want my time back!)

Gallardo994, in What are your criteria for upvoting/downvoting?

I generally don’t downvote anything. I, however, upvote stuff other people might want to see first. Easy as that.

ohlaph, in 1st time house buyer, potentially serious structural issues found... anyone have advice re negotiating price reduction / if I should pull out?

Walk away. If they’re cheap on electricity, they’re probably cheap on maintenance.

Transcendant,

Agreed. I’d already had some thoughts that it wasn’t the one but after all the advice I’ve gotten here, there’s no way I can buy this house.

randomTingler, in 1st time house buyer, potentially serious structural issues found... anyone have advice re negotiating price reduction / if I should pull out?

When you buy something that’s going to be with you till your last day, it should give happiness. You shouldn’t be anxious and sleepless at night because of that.

themoonisacheese, in What do I put on my resume when the contract owner of my job changes?
@themoonisacheese@sh.itjust.works avatar

Not many employers are gonna care what company you contracted under, they will just care what company you did the real work for.

Anticorp,

Exactly. The only place where you need to declare both is for the background check.

Nemo, in What do I put on my resume when the contract owner of my job changes?

I had this happen in a different industry. I put both companies on the same line, separated by a slash. The position is the more important part anyway.

UtMan1988, (edited )

Oh, that’s an idea. I have it currently listing the company on the top, and position below. Maybe I should swap the two…

They don’t be want you to know in case you’re a plant working for “the Man”.

Upvoted anyway. What could go wrong?

hperrin, in Which internet meme, if somehow erased from ever emerging, might have the biggest impact?

Does it have to be an internet meme? Also does God count as a meme?

conciselyverbose,

Meme was coined by Richard Dawkins in The Selfish Gene in 1976, and defined as the equivalent of a gene but for more abstract ideas (because the gene is ultimately just a unit of information as well). I don't remember for sure if religion is specifically an example he personally used, but if it's not it's very comfortably in the same vein.

intensely_human,

Religion is a memeplex in Dawkins’s conception

Modern_medicine_isnt, in What's the purpose of strategy statements and other "corporate plans" in office culture

Creating it is a job to give someone they want to promote. It gives them visibility with a large amount of management and tells that management that this person is moving up. The resulting whatever becomes a thing managers can then use to justify just about any decision they make. It is also used for countless hours of meeting where the real goal is for the “leadership” to advertise how important they are. I shit you not, the company I worked at previously had full on film crews with makeup professions make glamor videos of direct level folks talking about it like they were imparting wisdom from the ages.

holycrap, in Which internet meme, if somehow erased from ever emerging, might have the biggest impact?

Probably the one we already removed. I’d tell you which I’ve but unfortunately I forgot.

Rhynoplaz,

Don’t blame yourself, last month’s Emergency Broadcast Test wiped it from everyone’s memory.

The I Can Haz Cheeseburger? kickoff meme of the happy Russian Blue cat.

I wasted sooooo much time on ICHC and it was due to that memeified cat picture that started it all.

Xariphon, in Which internet meme, if somehow erased from ever emerging, might have the biggest impact?

LOLCats?

I'm thinking you have to go way back, something like lolcats, advice duck, ceiling cat, something where if you remove it from the equation meme culture just straight up does not develop, or does not develop the same way or at the same time.

Valmond,

Ah remember Nyan cat :-D

cobysev,
@cobysev@lemmy.world avatar

Before LOLcats was Demotivational posters, which were just the generic motivational posters, but with a humorous twist. Motivational posters had a black border with text on the bottom, which made it easy to swap out in MS Paint with funny text back in the early Internet days. It was the first caption memes, which became even more popular when people started doing it with cute cat pics too.

SheDiceToday,

I still have a large folder of black boxes. One day they’ll be worth something!
