xigoi, in Do you first develop the abillity to read body language, or do you first learn how to speak?
@xigoi@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I mean, I’ve known how to speak for a long time now, but I still haven’t developed the ability to read body language…

0x4E4F,
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

You must have developed a way to read at least facial expressions. I should have added that in the title, since that is probably the first thing babies learn, but I was in a hurry.

lemmyng, in What non-SMS non-Apple app can I use to "text" my younger kid on their iPad

Slack? Threema?

cheese_greater, (edited )

Second Threema, just username and it generates ID

Edit: its only 2 * $3ma dollars

KammicRelief,

I didn’t think of Slack, but that’d be nice… I already have it open all the time for work and a friend’s server. Kid probably needs an email address to sign up, but it’s about time to get one of those too… thanks!

Wasn’t Signal getting rid of the phone number requirement?

jeena,
@jeena@jemmy.jeena.net avatar

No, they will probably never get rid of it, they just added usernames on top of it.

I_Am_Jacks_____, in What non-SMS non-Apple app can I use to "text" my younger kid on their iPad

If you guys have gmail accounts, use Google Chat.

KammicRelief,

The kid doesn’t (yet…) but it’s probably about time to get them a non-school email address… so yeah that would be an easy option. thanks for the vote!

GreyShuck, in Do you first develop the abillity to read body language, or do you first learn how to speak?
@GreyShuck@feddit.uk avatar

Depends what you mean by body language. I think that most can recognise basic facial expressions like happiness and fear before they can talk, and understand things like pointing and reaching for things to express interest etc.

0x4E4F,
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yes, that is what I meant actually. Just body language in general, body language and facial expressions.

You could use Matrix. matrix.org/ecosystem/clients/ if you’re trying to not sign up for an account on the big platforms.

LodeMike,

Matrix is the best

KammicRelief,

this looks cool, thank you! I might give one of those clients a whirl.

I’ve only come across this with a search so I’ve never used it www.kinzoo.com/kinzoo-messenger

KammicRelief,

looks promising, thanks! I’ll take a look.

Simplex.chat might work for you.

KammicRelief,

This looks good and easy… will definitely look into it more, thank you!

qooqie, (edited ) in Do you first develop the abillity to read body language, or do you first learn how to speak?

Babies are definitely much more aware of body language at a young age. They’ll cry even before learning words if you express that they should cry. Example: they hit themselves with a shovel you run over, worried, and ask if they’re okay, they think “oh I was supposed to be in pain” and will cry. If you’re chill in that situation the kid might not even be aware they could reasonably cry in that situation

@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

Oh yeah, that has happened with my son 😂. Like he starts crying when you go over to check if he’s OK and hug him. The same thing happens and I don’t do that, he just carries on doing whatever he wanted to do 😂… or forgets what it was he wanted to do (the hit interrupts his thought process 😂) and just does something else 😂.

Threema, best $6 eva

KammicRelief,

thank you… that’s a few people voting for threema, I’ll definitely check it.

Zachariah,
@Zachariah@lemmy.world avatar

Threema is awesome. They even have a Mastodon account: mastodon.social/

Here are the settings I recommend during app and account setup:

• Tap next instead of making a Threema Safe password, and Tap Yes, you really want to continue without enabling Threema Safe • Tap next instead of entering your phone number, and tap Yes to confirm you don’t want to enter your phone number • Turn off “Sync contacts”

Make sure to scan each other’s QR codes in person to get your three green dots.

Since you have to pay for the app, it’s less likely you’re the product.

Zachariah,
@Zachariah@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, and it’s not just messaging. Encrypted audio and video calls, too.

Nemo, in Do you first develop the abillity to read body language, or do you first learn how to speak?

We’re more or less born being able to “read” facial expressions and tone of voice. IDK about body language.

0x4E4F,
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

Facial expressions, yes, that is what I was aiming at mostly (I was in a hurry, I missed it in the title).

pleasejustdie, in What non-SMS non-Apple app can I use to "text" my younger kid on their iPad

We just use Discord. My daughter is 11 and has been on Discord for a while and uses it to talk to her friends while they are all gaming together, and can use it on her computer, phone, and tablet so she doesn’t have to switch devices just to talk. Granted my daughter does have her own phone number, but she’ll still use discord for her group chats just because of its ease of use and the ability for her and her friends to jump on a call to mine some crafts or ro some blox or whatever it is kids do these days.

KammicRelief,

Right on, that would definitely be easiest because I use discord all the time. And yeah, this kid is all about the craft mining and blox ro-ing, often with a facetime in the background with their friend :) thanks for the vote!

SharkEatingBreakfast,
@SharkEatingBreakfast@sopuli.xyz avatar

I’d second Discord! My kid and I use it.

We used to use Google chat or whatever the Gmail option was, but it was extremely difficult to do notifications on there.

My only advice is to keep an eye on servers they join and encourage them not to easily trust strangers or people who may say weird stuff.

With a general lesson internet safety (that honestly should be discussed with any online communication platform), you should be all good!

If you’re ok with signup by phone number (can be burner phone number), Telegram and Signal are options. Depending on country, if you’re unlucky you’d need to cycle through a few numbers that works for Telegram, Signal has no such problems
