clay_pidgin, in What are your favorite names?

I like the names of the Machine People in the Ringworld books by Larry Niven.

Vallavirgillin and Harriloprilar are my favorites, though I wouldn’t guarantee that I’ve spelled them correctly.

amio, in What are some activity examples that train finger or hand dexterity?

Video games can get pretty finicky when you go off the beaten path, requiring a lot of extra "mechanical skill" to get right.

A certain glitch on a game I play involves carefully timed button presses while keeping the control stick in a specific, narrow range just outside the "deadzone". You then go fast, and backwards, and have to steer by switching which side you're holding the control stick on. If at any point you go out of that range (either through the center/deadzone or tilted too far), it instantly stops working. And some other tricks in that game are hard.

So that sounds like a good way to practice some dexterity, I know it's helped mine.

Other than that there's stuff like Rubik's cubes, arts and crafts,

TwanHE,

Wavedashing / wavedancing?

amio,

Ocarina of Time, "Hyper-Extended Super Slide". Roll into e.g. an explosion, shield and target on the same frame within a certain frame window. For reasons, you go fast, and can retain the speed by keeping the stick in "ESS position".

Hyggyldy,

I wonder if the new Street Fighter would be good for that, since it’s put a lot of effort in to teaching new players.

Sir_Fridge, in What do you like about the vehicle you drive and would you have changed anythin about it?

I drive a 2011 nissan note wnd it’s comfortable. I can get a lot of shit in it, including wheelchair. But it’s absolutely fucking hideous. So probably that.

And maybe a fifth gear, the automatic only has 4. Oh and my radio is broken so that too.

Potatos_are_not_friends, in How do you spend your idle time?

I read a lot of books.

And by reading, half is a actual book. The other half is a audiobook while doing chores, working out, or general crafting.

I can honestly say reading non-fiction books about various subjects helped me a lot in life. From social issues and self-help, to finances, to dating. I grew up poor in a pretty rough environment, and climbed out of it because of reading.

Wife and I got a Mazda CX-90 PHEV and last mileage at fill up it on a 1/4 tank it had gone 600+ miles. She goes 45 min one way once a week. If it weren’t for that she’d get well over 1000 miles on a tank as she almost always drives it in EV only around town. It goes 26 miles on the battery. 2.5kWhs (not the best) and 36mpg on gas at the moment (that can go a lot higher depending on how you drive it).

Get a hybrid or PHEV for sure. EV really depends on how far you need to drive and how much electricity costs. During peak hours (4p-8p here) our rate (33¢/kWh) for our vehicle is equivalent to gas at $3.98/gal (not cheap in the US). Off peak the rate is $11¢/kWh and is much cheaper.

Just wish the battery was larger at ~50 miles and didn’t cost so much. Other than that, it’s an incredibly fun vehicle to drive, has a great interior, and has an easy to navigate and use infotainment system.

skybreaker, in What are your favorite names?
@skybreaker@lemmy.world avatar

Ariadne. Princess of Crete who led Theseus through the labyrinth.

I like Greek mythological names and this one is beautiful.

clay_pidgin,

Any idea how it’s pronounced?

skybreaker,
@skybreaker@lemmy.world avatar

I just listened to an audiobook of the same name. They pronounced it “Air-ee-odd-knee”. But I actually like the pronunciation “Are-ee-odd-neigh” better. Emphasis on the “odd” in both cases.

clay_pidgin,

Gracias, amigo.

CADmonkey, in What is the most promising pathway to reach universal healthcare?

Some sort of strike. Either a general labor strike, or a debt strike. A general strike of laborers will be hard to organize, and there will always be scabs.

But a debt strike ia easier. Although I should probably say “Bill strike”. It goes like this: don’t pay four or five figure medical bills. Just put them in the shredder. If a significant portion of the population does this, it will force change. Just like the courts getting backed up because there were too many evictions, they will get backed up by all the wage garnishment cases that I’m sure someone is typing a reply about. If nobody pays, there isn’t much of a way to enforce it.

I don’t like how my 2014 Hyundai Elantra turns on the air conditioner all the time. Something is wrong with the controls, and it keeps engaging the AC when I turn on the car, no matter what the climate controls are set to.

Kedly, in What do you like about the vehicle you drive and would you have changed anythin about it?

I’m driving transit, and I love not burning a(nother, nowadays there are many different holes) hole in my bank account, and also being able to fuck around on Lemmy or my steam deck on my way to work and back

SARGEx117, in What do you like about the vehicle you drive and would you have changed anythin about it?

Pro: it… Um… It goes.

Con: gas mileage, body damage, rust everywhere, air vents don’t change and only spew hot air, gas mileage, interior is falling apart, every other month it’s refusing to hot restart for a couple days, it’s cramped in the foot and head space, gas mileage, and there rods are going to need replaced soon.

And honestly the gas mileage kind of sucks.

If I could get an EV, wall battery, and solar/wind combo I’d be content.

Eavolution, in What do you like about the vehicle you drive and would you have changed anythin about it?
@Eavolution@kbin.social avatar

I've a wee 2016 1.2tsi manual skoda fabia. I really like it, think the dashboards layed out perfectly, everything intuitive to use, the AC is simple to adjust, its reasonably efficient, and is the right size for me.

I'd prefer insurance companies to stop taking the piss with the prices, I've never hit anything or got any points, its literally just because I'm a young man. I'd also prefer there to be a little more space between the clutch and side wall in the footwell as I have wide feet and its easy to clip the clutch when putting my left foot on the foot rest.

AnonStoleMyPants, in What cheap tool/gadget do you use that greatly improves your daily life?

Smart lights to wake you up in the morning. Vastly prefer it to a normal alarm clock.

WhiteHawk,

A sunrise alarm clock will do the trick, too

AnonStoleMyPants,

I had one before but the light was so weak and if you were sleeping on the side with the back of your head towards it, it did nothing. Though to be fair I do have a smart light in my nightstand lamp to do the same, but it is more like extra.

WhiteHawk,

There’s better and worse ones, obviously. Mine is so bright it lights up the entire room by itself.

radix,
@radix@lemm.ee avatar

This doesn’t work for everyone obviously, but I leave my blinds open at night so that the sun will wake me up. Works for me when I don’t have to be anywhere before noon.

itsprobablyfine,

Yeah the further north you get the less this works on both sides of the sleep unfortunately

Kase,

On a similar note, I have an alarm clock that has a thing I can put under my pillow that vibrates to wake me up. (The box said it’s made for Deaf people, which makes sense lol). As someone who doesn’t wake up to ANYTHING, this works for me almost every time.

cheesymoonshadow,
@cheesymoonshadow@lemmings.world avatar

Is the vibrating of your phone not enough to wake you? I just use my phone as an alarm clock and keep it by my pillow. All my alarms are set to vibrate so it doesn’t wake my husband.

Kase,

The phone vibrating on the bed doesn’t wake me up, nor does the sound at full volume. And the alarm clock is super aggressive lol. It has 15 levels, and I turn it up all the way. The whole mattress be shaking

cheesymoonshadow,
@cheesymoonshadow@lemmings.world avatar

That is some super deep sleeping you got going on. 😅

Poopknife

SeabassDan,

I still use the scissors, can’t get enough leverage with the knife sometimes.

That or I need more fiber.

elscallr,
@elscallr@lemmy.world avatar

If you ever have to resort to the knife resist the urge to push it against the toilet. If it cuts through suddenly the sharp impact from the blade could crack the porcelain.

hiremenot_recruiter,
@hiremenot_recruiter@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Sorry, what?

wahming,

A knife made of fossilised coprolite, so it looks at home in the toilet. Alternatively, a knife used to cut up poop for inspection before disposal.

Dontfearthereaper123,

Bit nit picky but coprolite is fossilied poop. Saying fossilied coprolite is a bit redundant as coprolite already states that it’s fossilised

wahming,

No I agree with you perfectly, but it was a choice between making it semantically correct, and making it more readable / understandable to most readers.

Papergeist,

Lol it’s an old story from reddit. Allegedly, this guy was at a friend’s house and he went to the bathroom. But he couldnt find the poopknife and called out for it. He was mortified to learn that the average family did not employ the use of a poopknife.

glitch1985,

What’s a reddit?

SatyrSack,

A closed source centralized Lemmy alternative.

Papergeist,

I made the whole thing up. It came to me in a fever dream.

blackbrook,

It’s like an internet poop knife.

hiremenot_recruiter,
@hiremenot_recruiter@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

WTF

macrocephalic,

The funny thing is that you can actually buy a poop knife now.

ohlaph,

Poop knife.

fiat_lux, in About cheese

Possibly the starter lactic acid bacterial culture, lactobacillus helveticus. It's known for giving cheeses a slight sweetness. Honey has a bunch of different acids in it, composition differs by source, but there's a good chance that's what the flavor similarity you're noticing is.
