I appreciate how this comic avoids ever saying the word “Godzilla”, no doubt due to Toho’s infamous litigiousness.

lobut, in 21 December 1986

I love just the two-panel joke at the top. It’s great.

threelonmusketeers, (edited )

IIRC, Watterson strongly disliked having to come up with these throwaway jokes which were often cut for space.

His parents bought him a Ouija board? Think mom or dad picked it out?

It’s pretty funny that someone would give a single child who is never seen playing with other kids (Suzie doesn’t count since he doesn’t play with her; he torments her) a game that requires at least 2 people. Definitely seems like something his dad would do.

empireOfLove, in 18 December 1986

If Calvin was 6 in 1986, then he’d be turning 44 in 2024. Very young in the current political climate but definitely possible to run for president…

44 year old Calvin would probably make a decent candidate. He’s already pretty articulate for a 6 year old, very creative, and shenanigans aside seems to have a good heart.

This is quite cute, considering Hobbes is a figment of Calvin’s imagination

tygerprints, in 15 December 1986

I miss Calvin and Hobbes. I really respected Bill Watterson's work. Can anyone tell me how I can get a decal of Calvin peeing on Hobbes for my pickup truck, 'cause that would really be great.....

rhythmisaprancer,
@rhythmisaprancer@kbin.social avatar

Not sure if you are being facetious, but Bill Watterson never endorsed those stickers and as far as I know even tried to stop them at one point.

tygerprints,

That's exactly what I am being. Because Watterson went to such great lengths to try to keep his creations from being misused and mass marketed to sell other products. And also, it's a line from the Simpsons - Moe says, "If you could get me a decal of Calvin peein' on Hobbes, that would be great!" Well - it's funny in a kind of sad way if you think about it.

I wonder how many younger people will have no idea what Calvin is doing to dial the phone.

MonkderZweite,

I’ve grown up with dial phones being something from grandma and i’m past 30.

tygerprints,

My fave is the cartoon where Calvin is busy hammering nails into the dining table. His mom rushes in and screams, "Calvin, what are you DOING??" And he looks at the table, then at her and says, "Is this a trick question?" I can identify as being that kind of kid.

How would he get the reciever off?

*Is this confirmed Calvin’s Dad is a leftie?

tpyo,

I’ve very much so noticed in the cartoon universe that most people are lefties, so he very well could be!

That is still how it feels playing Scrabble with my mom. She wrote for a living for years and is way too good at Scrabble.

I have a big vocabulary but all I ever get are consonants.

BugleFingers,

I like to believe I have a colorful and fairly large vocab since I grew up in a reading household and was obsessed with dictionary’s word of the day for years. However, I am an awful speller.

I blame the fact that the English language is actually three languages in a trenchcoat pretending to be it’s own language.

Sadly I’ve still yet to get “Bugles” on the board…as a word for points I mean, definitely spilled some in the past O.o

Great strip, but the image quality was #%*^ on my old eyes.

DrFuggles,

I think it depends on how your app handles previews? I used to get really grainy images on sync before a recent update.

wahming,

This particular image is somewhat low res, might be what OP’s talking about

nocturne213,

The preview looks fine, other than being too small for me to read. When I zoom in on each panel, as I do on all of these, it is fairly blurry. This is an issue with the scan from GoComics.

These poll jokes went way over my head as a kid. Now that I’m an adult, they’re pretty funny!

Am I the only one who can’t load the image?

Hazmatastic,

Load the HD version and it shows up. At least that’s my work-around
