And a new team project begins. Team leaders from the last term’s projects were exempt from being in charge again this time, which was something of a relief for a couple of hours. The new team leader is a lovely guy, but very shy and socially awkward, and so far his success rate for deciding what to do and delegating it to someone is… uh… one time. A couple more times if you include me making a suggestion and him going “yeah, what Frog said.” I have to give the dude credit for volunteering for team leader - given his personality, it was a seriously brave thing to do and I genuinely admire that. But I understand there are some bets amongst the class for £5-£10 over how many weeks it will be before I’m in charge. And I’m just like… nope, I am not taking over. I’m just not doing it.

Past few days have been alright. I had a dream about people dying last night that just kept going, so I’m in a really off mood this morning.

At the end of last year all I had was hope and patience. Through sheer luck and the kindness of complete strangers my living situation has finally stabilized.

The things that happened last year really did a number on me and now it takes time to recover once again. Sometimes I wonder if we’ll ever have a society where it is ok to be human.

Luckily I don’t drink or anything like that but it’s seemingly near impossible to get my arse into first gear to take care of the few responsibilities that I have.

Fortunately I’ve learned to take care of the basics like eating healthy, sleeping well, making friends, and knowing that through it all, even on the worst of days, that things will eventually improve. That it’s all worth it.

I just hope my client can find that final bit of patience, as I honestly don’t know what to tell them any more. I feel terrible about it, but also I want and need to work and so they’re kinda stuck with this situation too. All I can hope for is that when things start moving again that I can work multiple days per week. That would solve the issues for everyone involved.

Got like 3 hours sleep last night, slept in, ate too fast, stomach ache all day due to that. Other than that, easy work day and the week is light on work to boot. Might get snow where I live too. That would be…cool.

I’m on book 1 so far but it’s already quite an accomplishment for me to be reading again. I used to read on my 1h train commute but since I got a new job and the train is only 20 mins anymore I pretty much stopped reading altogether. I’ve decided to get back into it anyway even though it’s only small boats at a time, and I’m really happy to be back :)

I’m stupid. Last week, my rss reader lost all my subscriptions. Or so I thought. I’ve just noticed that I was logged in under a different account…

Anxiety has been through the roof this past week. My weekend hasn’t been too great either on account of a hole in my insulation causing my water to freeze on Friday. Hoping that it comes back tomorrow once temperatures start staying above freezing.

Edit: WATER IS BACK YAY

I am tired. Very tired. That is all. -Update I slept for 10 hours, like a log. My body was really telling to tell me I needed some rest.

Melody, in Recent and perplexing ordeal with YouTube

You can appeal this bogus appeal outcome; but prepare to go to battle on Twitter with TeamYoutube and don’t expect to win…unless you can prove your channel was either “more official”, “not claiming to be official”, or "Not Official, not claiming to be, and you started your channel before they started theirs.

I completely agree. Hence why I will not be fighting this.

LallyLuckFarm, in The Future Of E-Commerce Is A Product Whose Name Is A Boilerplate AI-Generated Apology

Everything I’ve seen about hyper-specific-specialty-data-trained, limited purpose AI - particularly for medical screenings - looks promising. The idea of a FOSS AI trained locally on my own collection of documents is intriguing, but I have a hard time believing that it will be useful beyond asking it to pull up any notes relevant to keywords of any given project I’m working on.

Conversely, nearly everything I’ve seen about general AI/LLMs, including my own (limited) experiences, provides little reason to believe the hype espoused by the folks promoting them.

This is our real future, not AI suddenly fixing climate change and allowing us all to live meaningful lives in a Star Trek-like utopia. It’s this.

Some slightly off-track suggestions (because genres are a bit misaligned with what you’re asking for):

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir (The Locked Tomb series)

Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won’t set her free without a service.

Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will be become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon’s sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die.

I must admit that Charles Stross’ pitch is what got me to pick up the book in the first place, it’s just too funny:

“Lesbian necromancers explore a haunted gothic palace in space!” —Charles Stross

OK, maybe not so far off the path …

That’s a general internet thing. The best advice I can give is try to ignore the worst ones, and focus on the rest. Focusing on the negative just drags you down into it.

There’s a 50/50 chance I just got myself fired for standing up for myself at work, I’ll find out on Tuesday when I go back in, I guess; it really doesn’t matter to me anymore, I wasn’t happy there, just stressed. If I’m not, then that’s cool.

This is definitely the most euphoric I’ve felt in years, I think I’m going to celebrate with a trip to the beach and maybe look for some spots to skate. I think I’ll start self advocating for myself more, too. I like this feeling.

University spring term started again this week, and after being loaded down with three more assignments (including another group project), we also got the grades for one of last term’s assignments. I am very, very pleased with mine - 81%, which probably only really means something to those familiar with UK degree-level grading, but I’m really proud of it (while simultaneously being mildly annoyed I couldn’t do better). Last term’s group project grades will be given next week (though we do know that everyone passed, which is 40% or higher), and I’m expecting that one to be quite a bit lower. I’d like something above 70%, but that feels a bit optimistic given what a disaster the project was.

I’ve mentioned on a number of occasions the guy who was on my team project whose combination of arrogance and laziness made him more of a hindrance than a help throughout the entire project. I had a bit of a blow up at him just before Christmas, the culmination of his obstructiveness, his chronic (but not terminal) verbal diarrhoea, and utter lack of ability to accept that no means no. (“Do not touch my laptop” is pretty explicit, and should not prompt an argument about how it’s fine because he knows how to handle laptops.) Anyway, the outcome of this is that he’s spent the whole week sulking in the corner of the room, not talking to anyone. He also ragequit the class Discord server over Christmas, and nobody even noticed he was gone until today when we were getting set up for the new group project. That’s how much everybody likes him. I feel a little bad because I don’t like it when someone feels like they’re not welcome… even when they’re genuinely not welcome because they’re a dick.
