If you want more grimdark and it has to be fantasy, check out Warhammer horror especially the vampire Genevieve. If you’re okay with grimdark science military science fiction, a good chunk of the Warhammer 40k and Horus Heresy lines will fit your bill.

I feel like Hobb is much lighter. For whatever reason I always think of Tad Williams and the Dragonborn Chair as connected to Hobb. I suspect it’s from the Legends anthology but they were only together in Legends II with a different Hobb trilogy setting and Otherland for Williams. Both are great starting points to find authors that have huge bodies of work that could hook you. They were how I found George RR Martin back in the early aughties.

old school: Forgotten Realms

More games of thrones-ey, but less so: Wheel of Time

Grand but well paced: Stormlight Archive (Brandon Sanderson)

scifi one-shot: Sea of Rust

I picked up sea of rust on a whim before I was about to board a flight. It was an unexpectedly fun read.

noctisatrae,

Thanks!

Broke up with my long distance girlfriend, I couldn’t handle the distance, it’s the most painful thing I have ever done, but I just felt so sad knowing that it might be years before I ever get to see her 🥲

retronautickz, in Thinking about the direction of Beehaw

I would prefer if Beehaw remained federated, but, as it is, I understand that the options of software for a platform like Beehaw on the fediverse are lacking on many aspect and started something new requires time,knowledge, and money.

petrescatraian, in Thinking about the direction of Beehaw

@admin does Lemmy have any opt-in federation system? Like, only allow certain remote servers to connect? Maybe that would be a viable alternative

sarmale,

I think yes, an allowlist

petrescatraian,

@sarmale exactly. I saw on r/RedditAlternatives that someone created a Lemmy instance that was defederated from everyone - so it is possible to turn your Lemmy server into a walled garden. Maybe an allowlist would make for a better middle ground.

We simply need a lot more moderation tools than the current set of lemmy devs are willing to create, and many of them see some of the requests as frivolous or not in line with their personal beliefs on how the website mechanics should work. There’s also a metric ton of bugs, potential legal issues with how the platform deals with federation and malicious and abhorrent material, and the issue of the code of choice this website runs on not being a particularly popular or easy to pick up coding language meaning less access to talent to fix or work on new things. We’ve been talking about potentially moving platforms for some time now and with time there are just more discoveries of new issues.

petrescatraian,

@Gaywallet I see. What about the other federated choices? Like Kbin or Mbin, even Discourse?

Gaywallet,
@Gaywallet@beehaw.org avatar

These are among the platforms we are testing

petrescatraian,

@Gaywallet That's great to hear! 😁

derbis,

What in particular? Maybe these could be addressed as a fork. I would be willing to contribute to the extent I can

I will be honest with you, I do not think that it would be a good use of your time. This has been unfolding for a long time and its clear that there are both coding and ideological issues with lemmy as a platform (there’s plenty of discussions of this which have unfolded in the chat and beehaw support communities which I would suggest reading up on). However, if you are committed to making lemmy as a whole a better place, here’s a truncated list of some of the still existing issues:

  • There are not enough federation options to deal effectively with current problems, at minimum:
    1. One-way federation to protect our site culture
    2. Exemption from all feed & media reject to handle pornography
  • Purging posts and comments does not purge associated images
  • Reports are not sent to the right places (example: we don’t get reports about our users’ off-instance activity and reports are not sent to moderators which are off-instance)
  • The modlog does not work in a chronological fashion and does not allow to filter actions by instance or per community
  • Moderators are exposed to graphic images because a banned user’s description is still visible
  • If you are a mod of a community, and you get banned from that community you mod, you can still take mod actions
  • If you get site-banned from an instance and you are from another instance, you can still post on the community and people from your instance can see and interact with your posts
derbis,

Thanks for the thorough answer. I’ll have to do some thinking.

Where are these discussions happening? I haven’t seen much on the Lemmy instance itself until like yesterday.

Gaywallet,
@Gaywallet@beehaw.org avatar

They’ve happened here in the open in the communities mentioned but also extensively on our discord and matrix

retronautickz, in how's your year going, Beehaw

Last year hasn’t been a good year for me, to be fair. I’ve been having some health problems (luckily I’m on medical treatment and it’s nothing serious)

I don’t expect much from this year, but I hope to be able to do more things (and be once again active in the fediverse) now that my health issues are more controlled.

New year celebrations were alright. I expend it with the family.

Painfully. Ribcage & sternum in bits following some overly exuberant dancing on the 30th. Hopefully just bruising & fractures and not soft tissue damage, but extra uncomfortable with a bad cough.

Still, should help me quit smoking as in too much pain to want to & likewise to shift pattern of seeing boyfriend to something far less frequent.

EDIT: realised I had to end things with boyfriend, so did that then got a barrage of super-manipulative texts, complete with vague suicide threats, so definitely dodged a bullet there. Very supportive message then came in from a mutual friend, so was able to clear up a few things.

big yikes at the ex. i had something similar several years ago. block that turd!

apis,

So sorry that happened to you.

Keeping him unblocked but muted, just in case he threatens to approach. Having forewarning (and evidence if it really escalates) is useful & my feelings are now such that he’s incapable of upsetting me.

Happy to report he’s gone quiet for now.

The cats were cute. The hosts’ reactions to seeing them was a bit over the top imo.

memfree,

As well as hosting the ball drop for something like 20 years, Anderson Cooper has covered war, famine, and devastation – but the thing he can’t handle is showing the viewers’ back home a camera shot of cat’s butt.

xilliah, in how's your year going, Beehaw

I’m excited about the new year. I’ve made some new friends and want to explore that. And I might be falling in love but a part of me also hopes that’s not the case.

Oof. Well, to my surprise.

Have so much going on (nothing bad, though some confounding stresses are trying to emerge) that have been procrastinating on replies to the usual weekly threads, and now a summary feels ever more distant.

As for Christmas itself, my tiny & fairly reclusive family go for a super low stress affair, but many years even that much feels far big a palaver. Planning to propose we just do it once every few years, and hone in on the aspects we genuinely like.

I’m a teacher and winter vacation started today. My plans are to play Terraria 😎

rozwud,

Mine starts tomorrow and will very likely include some Terraria as well!

DroneRights, in how's your week going, Beehaw

Lots of stress and uncertainty, but some of the uncertainty is good maybe? Made a new Beehaw account, eager to try this experiment of whether I fit in here

tiago,

Welcome! 🥂

Had day off, back to work tomorrow, hopefully all quiet on the IT front.

Pandantic, in To end capitalism we need to ignore it.
@Pandantic@midwest.social avatar

The best way, imo, is to put your cash money in people and businesses that support socialist ideals rather than capitalist ones. What you propose sounds like a utopian scenario, but until we can step out of paying money for things, we should do our best to keep it out of the hands of the bourgeois. And I want to emphasize that this includes the big banks that make money off of processing payments.
