I completely agree. Hence why I will not be fighting this.

I just finished my final exam. I need a good grade to pass this class. So here’s to hoping I did it!!

MangoKangaroo,

At least I’m not the only one who got to enjoy some December exams. Fingers crossed for you!

PaddleMaster,

Thank you!! I did well, so I’m very excited!

Power’s out - we’re seeing wind gusts over 50mph and have gotten a little over two inches of rain since last night. Currently waiting for the lowest-ranked-in-the-US power company to repair things. Two trees snapped off their trunks about eight feet off the ground and landed just a few feet from our duck yard, so at least I don’t have to fix any fencing.

Edit: power’s back! Met two nice folks from Canada who were down this way to do repairs and convinced them to take a tree off a line even though it wasn’t in their task list.

i’m on my last day of house sitting two big goofy german shepherds (+ a turtle). it’s been nice to veg out and chill with some mellow dogs and not have anything else to worry about. looking forward to sleeping in my own bed tonight though. i’ll be back here for a quick overnight on saturday-sunday, then going into winterfest weekend full ham.

xilliah,

Hey what’s the bandaid on the turtle for?

autumn, (edited )
@autumn@beehaw.org avatar

it’s a turtle in recovery, so that’s the identification number! technically this turtle has recovered, but it’s too late in the year to release it, so it’s overwintering until it’s warm out again. this is all through the local vet school, NC state university. :)

Can I have her number? Then we can see if she rings ☎️

I posted last week about being anxious for a big exam I had coming up. I was getting physically ill from the anticipation, and so I decided to just send it instead of waiting and studying until the last minute (it’s a WGU OA, so I can take it whenever.)

I’m super happy to say that I absolutely crushed it! That’s my last sit-down test, so now all that’s between me and my Bachelor’s is some essays and a work-based-learning experience! Needless to say I’m doing pretty good. :)

Templa,

Yassss!!! Congratulations! ❤️

MangoKangaroo,

Thanks! 💜

LallyLuckFarm,

Congratulations!

MangoKangaroo,

Thank you. :)

Had day off, back to work tomorrow, hopefully all quiet on the IT front.

Part of me has been enjoying the recent finding out going on. Maybe it’s because properly linked and referenced sourcing is cool and saying where someone got an idea doesn’t devalue how they’re implementing it. Maybe it’s because the people who are working on projects similar to my own are colleagues and not competition, since we all do better when we all do better.

GammaGames,

Not to mention, two of the books were from her own publisher.

LallyLuckFarm,

I have little doubt that that fact was a key factor in her publisher’s decision to break ties

furrowsofar,

With how many billion people in the world, any system that expects a monopoly on an idea is a bit suspect. Very few if anyone has a truly unique idea. It is more about who claims an idea most convincingly and effectively.

GammaGames,

Most writers have accepted that every idea has been done before. It’s all about execution

frog,

My impression is it wasn’t so much about thinking they had a unique idea that the others were “stealing”, as fearing the other books with similar themes releasing at a similar time would pull attention away from their book. Which is actually a bit silly, because generally the first thing someone does after loving a book with a particular genre/theme combo is go and look for more of the same. Cooperating with those other authors, so they all plug each others books (“Hey, if you loved my book, go check out X, Y, and Z too!”), would have been so much more productive.

This is so dumb. You got a deal with a big publisher and then you fuck it up by being a dumb fucking idiot.

About to be on vacations for the holidays. The season’s been hitting me hard and I (should) welcome a good two weeks of slouching about in unproductive bliss. On the other hand I’ve had so many bad Christmas that anxiety levels are mounting for no good reason. I’ve cut off a lot of unpleasant things from the holidays in the last years but I’m still coping with the aftermath.

Also I’m slowly coming to terms with the fact that I don’t know how to rest anymore. So I’ll do my best to keep positive and do nice things even though I’m a little apprehensive. There are some bits of my mind I could do without, ugh.

xilliah, in how's your week going, Beehaw

Well if anybody read my previous comment, I had a date a few weeks ago and scored an apartment. She allowed me to move in earlier, before she moved out. So we’re roommates now! And it’s a studio apartment so ya she’s an angel. Of course I immediately started doing all the chores and trying my best to cook the best meal for her.

To be honest I’m sad that she’s looking for a new place. I wouldn’t mind living with her. In fact I think I would really like it. It’s like we just click.

Anyway I woke up with the same smile I went to bed with. I was technically homeless and living in my office. It was damn cold. I am talking 13 degrees if you set the heating to 1000 euro a month, because electricity and war.

We used to heat it with wood and that was like 350 a month, but at least it was warm. It’s not allowed any more.

Well I’m just glad things are more stable now. It’s too much to explain but it was really bad. Now I can take care of the stuff that’s urgent and then hopefully I’ll be bored for a while. Then I’ll continue with my life work!

LallyLuckFarm,

I’m really glad you’re in a better spot now. Definitely hoping you can keep that trajectory.

My eyes popped at 350/month. That’s… that’s a lot. Around us $750 gets you two cords and that’s enough to heat our space all winter (but the house is <1200 square feet so it doesn’t take much).

xilliah,

Same size here actually. And I’ve invested in isolating it, so you could add that to the cost too. But that’s just a relatively small issue compared to all the others there. I just had to get out.

In fact today I felt like I was hit by a truck. Slept most of the day and couldn’t concentrate at all. All that stuff you pretend that doesn’t bother you, it catches up. But only because I’m safe here now, and so I can let it.

Thanks for your kindness.

Response from some of the authors targeted by Corrain: thedailybeast.com/cait-corrain-review-bombing-sca…

Readers who like a certain genre tend to read multiple books from the game genre, so these authors should be more like friends instead of competitors, which makes this betrayal harder to understand.

russjr08, in Alone for Christmas, once again

I don’t have many words of comfort, but I will say this: Even if when you look around you, it seems empty - that does not mean you are alone!

Conversely the same applies for me in my case, I’m supposed to have some family members around me for Christmas… and yet I feel much more disconnected and alone now than I ever have.

Logically, I know that my brain is just playing tricks on me. I have friends who truly care about me, and a few family members who do. But my siblings who are coming to visit us? They pretend to care (at least from my perspective), yet I doubt they do. I’ve heard from others the thoughts they have about me, and it’s really sad to hear.

Unfortunately, the heart often does not follow logic. I can’t help but feel how I do. The only thing I can do is just as I have, which is continuing to push on as hard as I can - some days I don’t make any progress and it feels like I’m frozen in a single frame of the timeline… But I live for the days where the bad fades away, even if only briefly.

So it’s not much, I know, but I will be thinking of you and the rest of my friends here at the Fediverse (and my personal friends of course) throughout the holidays! Some days the road is dark, but you’ll never have to walk it alone.

petrescatraian, in Alone for Christmas, once again

@taanegl whatever you do, don't stay at home. This is a great opportunity to travel places. I spent my previous two Christmases alone in my house and I felt miserable. Try going to some place where you could go in the morning or return to the evening if you don't afford/cannot get accommodation. Or, if you can, book a ticket in a sleeper train in one day in the evening, and another in a sleeper train back in the evening of the next day (that way, you could combine the cost of the accomodation with that of the transport, and you could come out cheaper and save time). Try getting through all the best parts of that place - maybe check for information about that city on Wikipedia or anywhere and take some photos (it could also be an opportunity to get into photography if you want. That'll help you out as well. Then start categorizing your pics into a photo management program, you'll keep yourself busy a lot).

As for me, I think I have enough chores to do to keep myself busy. Plus some movies to watch and a book to finish.

taanegl,

I love to travel :) never considered myself a tourist, because I like to travel to places and meet the people there. Not to lay on beaches and buy cheap trinkets.

I need to save up money again to actually go somewhere I’ve never been. I want to see Africa, Asia, even America. Been largely traveling in Europe and I feel like I need to spread the net wide.

Me and a Swedish-Ghanan friend have talked about visiting Japan to visit his friend, and I can maybe say hello to an old friend who plays the clarinet :)

The world truly is full of wonderful people.

petrescatraian,

Yeah, it is 😁

I need to save up money again to actually go somewhere I've never been.

I was thinking maybe you could get yourself a sort of city break if you can 😁 visit some town nearby and check the places, idk.
