Omg, what a cool, funny and edgy comment section!

ArbitraryValue, (edited ) in Who wants a treat?

People would tell me that my dog was badly trained, but the way I see it, being trained isn’t fun. I have to be trained because I need to be able to earn money and survive in the real world, but my dog didn’t need a job and he asked for so little - why wouldn’t I provide him everything he wanted?

Plus it was absolutely hilarious when he would gradually lure guests away from the dinner table by being adorable and then when they were far enough from it, he would dash back to it faster than they could and eat their food.

    chuckleslord,

Proper training for a dog isn’t a punishment. It’s a contract between you and them. It reduces stress, forms a stronger bond, and can make life easier for the both of you.

You don’t need to be your dog’s Supreme Commander or anything, but it’s important that both you and your dog know the rules in any situation before it comes up.

On a serious note, your dog tricking guests out of food is risky behavior, because the dog thinks it’s a game and as soon as someone doesn’t play along your dog will become frustrated and might lash out.

    ArbitraryValue,

Just to clarify: he wasn’t completely wild. He was well-socialized and he wasn’t aggressive about food - you could safely stick your hand in his mouth and pull food out. Beyond that, I didn’t bring him to places where he could get in trouble that way.

I get that “badly trained” can mean various things including simply neglecting a dog, but in the context of this meme I just meant that my dog wanted to eat whatever people were eating (in moderation) and he whined a lot if someone refused to play with him.

    MotoAsh,

Very true. My dogs aren’t perfectly obedient, but they’re not mean to people. It just takes setting some boundaries and being firm when they overstep. Now, all it takes is a, “hey!” when they’re getting too excitable or doing something bad and they’ll try to figure out what’s wrong. Their little nuzzles of contrition are so damn adorable.

As long as you foster a good relationship, the disapproval of the behavior should be enough punishment for the majority of dogs… and children for that matter. The rest shouldn’t need violence, but better forms of discipline than I know how to adequately describe.

Doctors gave my parents a choice to let my neonatal sibling die naturally. I grew up with them, loved them, and never wanted anything but the best life for them and my family.

If a doctor gives you a choice you should take it. It isn’t a happy life for them, the people they should care about, or broader society.

    irish_link,

I can only imagine how hard this may be to talk about.

I ask this question to get clarification and not make you relive a hardship in any way. So please just respond with “no thanks” if its to hard to give more details or just ignore completely.

Your comment was a little confusing to me. Can you expand on it a little so I can understand. Was your comment that it was not a happy life meant that its not a perfect life for those who are born in that situation but they find true joy and bring light to those around then from your experience? Or more give them a shot and they will show you how far they can go because they are determined to show you what the hell they are made of.

I ask this not as an outsider but as a friend who has seen a few extremes in this real including my cousin.

    exhaust_fan,

It’s fine, ask away. It’s important people think through long term implications so I’m happy to answer.

Such babies stand very low chances of living healthy normal lives. In my sibling’s case they didn’t live a happy or comfortable life, they precldued my other siblings and I from valuable childhood experiences, strained my parents’ marriage, and were a huge burden on taxpayers and society. There were some good moments but truthfully they never brought anyone any real happiness and no one ever honestly wanted them to be around.

It’s natural to want to cling on to those you love hoping the best for them, especially for mothers. My strong opinion is all things considered the kindest thing for everyone’s long term wellbeing is to be strong and let them go.

    FictionalCrow,

As long as you keep that shitty opinion mostly to yourself that’s fine. When you try advocate for it legally or socially like this don’t be surprised when you end up with the Nazis and missing teeth.

My god their disabled sibling “truthfully they never brought anyone any real happiness and no one ever honestly wanted them to be around.”

    irish_link,

Wow… you seem like a real shit of a person. Or just a troll I am guessing. No one brought right/left or anything like politics up but you sure as hell tried to start a fire. You have one comment, no posts, so I am guessing just a shot person or being paid to cause harm. Good luck buddy, hope your soul is worth it.

We really don’t need more podcasts

    Kindness, (edited )

The greatest podcast has yet to be.

It will never occur if no new voices tried their first podcast.

I still want to hear more about my niches. How to elicit kind responses from others. How to more effectively teach others. How to communicate. I want to hear from disparate sources in different styles. I want to hear people who are skilled at creating a natural environment to put their guests at ease. I want to hear passionate people. I want to hear voices that haven’t been heard yet, and will transform the current podcast into something better.

The internet was not impressive overnight. It became impressive after many voices added themselves to the mix. We really don’t need more websites… except that one that doesn’t exist yet.

Things mutating to double is easier. So you get 2-4-8 etc, and then specialization after.
